College Friends Reunion

  • 5 of 5

A group of college friends needed a central location to all gather together. With one family coming from Maine, and another from South Carolina, this was perfect. The house is very spacious, and has rooms well spaced if you need some private time. The kitchen is open to the dinning and living room, so meal prep can include a large group, even if only 2 people are doing the cooking. We had beautiful weather, and took advantage of both decks, one covered, one open. While we were there during the summer, I can see where this house would be perfect for a skiing vacation. The back patio looks ideal for coming in from the snow w/o having boots and jackets all over the house. We spent time in Thomas, WV and enjoyed the shops and a beverage at the Purple Fiddle. We also visited Elkins, WV for a ride on the New Tygart Express. A 4 hour train ride that takes you to The High Falls of the Cheat river. After the ride we visited the nearby Brewstel. It's a home brew shop with over 20 craft beers on tap, and very reasonably priced. Timberline Four Seasons Realty was very "easy to do business with" through the whole process. I would not hesitate to stay at this home again.

Beautiful place for a family vacation

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I, along with our three teenage boys, a girlfriend, and our friends and their two teen age boys spent 5 relaxing nights in this lovely home. Everything was provided to make this feel like home away from home. The house was very well maintained with every amenity we could think of possibly needing, plus many we didn't. The layout of the home was great, the hot tub was enjoyed every evening by all, and the grill and fire pit were great. There was plenty of seating inside and out. The guys really enjoyed the pool table, too. We took advantage of the nearness to visit Blackwater Falls, Seneca Rocks, and Seneca Cavern. We also enjoyed the fabulous view from the Timberline Resorts Scenic Chairlift Rides and watched some other folks zip-lining and horseback riding. And for anyone that likes seafood... The Golden Anchor is a must! It's like being at a fresh seafood restaurant in the middle of the mountains. If we ever go back come back to the area, we will definitely check into this home again. The owner was great to work with and very friendly, and the rental agency gals were friendly, as well.

Family and Celebrations

  • 5 of 5

This year we started an annual family getaway for me, my husband, our 3 grown children, and my mom. I chose this home with my daughter's wedding ceremony in mind and the proximity to everyone, and it was perfect. The decks, jacuzzi, pool room, sunroom, home layout and the backdrops/sunset worked for us beautifully. All our guests commented on this beautiful home. Now to explore the rivers, mountains and caverns. What a blessing. We will definitely return!

We loved it! The area was beautiful as was the home. There was a great backyard for our 2 small dogs. The deer came around in the mornings and we met a great big old ground hog. Lots to see and do. We went to Blackwater Falls, took a horseback ride to the top of Seneca Rocks, and so much more. Definately will be coming back!

Bear's Retreat is located within 10 minutes of Canaan Valley State Park with golfing, swimming, trails, outdoor programs and more. Canaan Valley is a unique ecosystem in this part of the world. It is as if a piece of New England or Canada was plopped down into West Virginia. It's the highest elevation valley east of the Mississippi. Summers bring little humidity - temperatures rarely past the 90's, and cool refreshing evenings. Canaan's autumn leaves rival New England's brilliance and diversity of color. This area is also unusually remote for the 'East Coast'. You can hike in gorgeous remote places for hours and not see a soul - nor a man made structure. The Canaan Valley Wildlife Refuge is the habitat for over 150 bird species and a major flyover in the Fall. Other attractions include the Canaan Valley Resort and ski slopes, Blackwater Falls State Park, Timberline Resort, the historic mountain towns of Davis and Thomas featuring Mountainmade with its fine arts and crafts , the Purple Fiddle with its unique alt -country music and the Whitegrass Cross country Ski Center and Organic Cafe.

Other Activities: white water rafting, bird watching, hiking
