We are naturopathic/homeopathic doctors and authors, married for 30 years. In 2005 we embarked on a kayaking trip to Pumalin Park in the South of Chile, and fell in love with this part of the world. After our paddling adventure, we visited the lakes in Argentina, and ended our trip in Pucon. We had absolutely no intention of buying land in Chile, but we met friends at an eco-hostel who lived half the year in the Pacific Northwest and half in Chile...not a bad idea to enjoy two springs and two summers a year in gorgeous places! We ventured out with a realtor 'just out of curiosity' and found what we thought was our dream house. We returned to Whidbey Island, WA, where we live, and, try as we might, we just couldn't get that property out of our minds. We returned two months later, to either make an offer or chalk it up to a whim. We found a property next door, with an even more spectacular view of Villarrica Lake and the volcano. We purchased seven acres and built what really did turn out to be our dream house, in one of the most breathtakingly beautiful spots on earth. The owner of the house we so admired is now our best friend in Chile, as well as our neighbor. We built a lovely caretaker's home, continue to plant gorgeous flowers, native trees and bushes, fruit trees, and a steward a large organic garden. We have recently expanded our land, and added a small flock of sheep.
It helps that Judyth got a degree in Spanish literature and Bob is avidly improving his Spanish. Everyone who has stayed in our home has fallen in love with it, and it has been a joy to share our dream. When we are away from Gracias a La Vida, we miss it, as one misses a lover. Once you are there, you will understand what we mean.
Judyth Reichenberg purchased this house in 2005
We read in a sea kayaking magazine about a fabulous trip to the Chilean fiords. It was even more beautiful than we had imagined. We toured Chile a bit (Judyth was there in 1970, but it was Bob's first trip), traveled around the Argentine Lake District as well, then ended the southern portion of the trip in Pucon. Despite only being there for four days, everything happened so quickly that we couldn't even keep up with it. We found a sublime home with a dynamite view, then had to leave a day later. We halfway hoped the idea would fly out of our minds, but it didn't. So, we returned a couple of months later and, after searching from dawn to dusk for two weeks, were shown the property next door to the home we had considered. The moment was stepped on the land, we just knew! It took us another couple of years to build the road, dig the well, and complete our house and our caretakers' home. All of this from 7000 miles away!
The view, the view, the view!! The shimmering water of the huge lake, the smoldering, snow-capped volcano; the countless stars of the Milky Way from our rooftop deck and hot tub; the delicious grilled chicken, lamb, and veggies grilled in our 'pancho'; the riotous cosmos, dahlias, lilies, lavender; the dream kitchen alive with color; the great mattresses and soft sheets ; more hikes and hot springs and restaurants than we could name; the honking Chilean geese; the elusive, green lorakeets, who show up now and then. Inviting good friends over for delicious, home-cooked meals from the garden and wonderful Chilean wine; our golden retrievers romping around the property; the calves frolicking in the pasture next door. Showering with the most awesome view of a smoldering volcano. Buying delicious fresh or smoked salmon from the local fishmongers.Trying out new, gourmet pizza recipes in our brick, outdoor pizza oven. Attending top-notch yoga, Pilates, and Zumba classes just ten minutes away. Strolling on the beach all by ourselves. Kayaking on Lake Villarrica with outrageous views everywhere, and no other paddlers in sight. Staying toasty with the Bosca woodstove or visiting one of the numerous local hot springs on a rainy day. Picking delicious, healthy, organic salads and fresh herbs right from our own garden and greenhouses. Eating the wonderful, fresh cheese that you can buy on practically every corner in Pucon. Greeting our cheerful cuidador (caretaker) each morning as he asks each of us, unfailingly, 'Como amanecio?'meaning 'How did you wake up?'
Our family stayed in this property over Christmas 2013. Pucon and the environs of Lake Villarica are wonderful - stunning lake / forest / mountain beauty with plenty of opportunities for hiking, sightseeing, geothermal pool visits, water sports etc. Gracias a la Vida is located on a hillside about 3 or 4 km outside Pucon up a little hidden gravel road. The views from the house are stunning - a 180 degree view of the lake from the front terrace and - as if that weren't enough - a magnificent view of the snow capped volcano out the back. To make this even more dramatic the roof of the house is a sun deck with spa with a 360 degree view of the whole lot! The house itself is very comfortable - three good sized bedrooms and two bathrooms, and a huge kitchen and living/dining room that make full use of the views. The garden is beautifully manicured by the on-site caretaker (very helpful guy) and the whole ambience is peace and relaxation. I cannot think of any negative points. Oh yes, the internet connection didn't work. Which was a blessing, because it meant that I got to play chess with my son every evening. You need a car to be able to access the property as it is too far to walk comfortably to Pucon. We hired a 4-wheel drive, which was necessary for the many places we visited, but the caretaker's "normal" car seemed to make it along the bumpy track without problems. Great place - the owners have done an excellent job!
Waking up to ever changing views of the lake, beautiful in rain or shine, was joyous. The gardens are inviting and beautifully tended and the patios ample and comfortable. Cooking in a well prepped kitchen was accompanied by a view of the Villarica Volcano. The pizza oven worked perfectly and needed utensils were available. This property is perfect for parties and we celebrated our daughter's wedding here with ease. The hot tub offered a pleasant recuperation after hikes to the National Park and volcano, zip lining and white water rafting. Gracias a La Vida is a perfect location for a perfect holiday.
This property is located a comfortable distance outside Pucon, the adventure capital of Chile.
The property has it all, a great view from literally every window, it is fully furnished with everything from massage chairs to a heated jacuzzi and the staff and owner are friendly and accommodating. If you are looking for a special relaxing getaway, with the opportunity to indulge in the best adventure sports Chille has to offer, this property is for you.
We were so lucky to have been able to have our wedding on Judyth and Bob's incredible property Gracias a la Vida. It was simply magical. Every direction you look there are incredible views, places to relax and remove yourself from the world and just love life. Judyth was so helpful and supportive of us having such an important event there, as were their wonderful caretakers Nelson and Anna-Maria who helped us cook, roast a local pig and lamb, and take care of the small details - both wonderful and such happy people. Every second was truly a dream and all the guests were constantly pinching themselves to check it was real. We had our ceremony with the volcano behind us, and reception party on their vast property overlooking the lake. The house is gorgeous and every detail is full of color, love and personality. With the other cabins as well, we could also have the wedding party and family stay with us so it was a true retreat experience, which was especially appreciated as we were there in february and could easily escape the traffic in Pucon and just relax at the property. You truly don't want to leave. The hot tub under the stars was my favorite part, on many nights you can even see a red glow coming out of the volcano, and I can't remember the last time I could see so many stars. We are hoping to return every year for our anniversary and one day build our own house just like it. I wouldn't change a thing it is truly the dream property and we had the most amazing dream wedding I could have ever hoped for. Thank you so much for such a wonderful experience, you truly have built the dream in paradise and it is so wonderful that you continue to share it with others. Much love and appreciation, Daniella and Alan
This was the best of all my VRBO rentals around the world. Back of the house delivers an unbelievable view of the Villarrica Volcano and in the front you have breath-taking views of Lake Villarrica. You will not want to leave. The house is wonderful with large Bedrooms, Bathrooms, Kitchen and living area. There are lots of windows to enjoy the view from any area in the house and a roof top deck with Hot Tub to enjoy 360 degree viewing. We spent our 36th Anniversary here and had 12 wonderful days. In my opinion, this is the best view and the best place to stay in the Puco area. You will not be disappointed.
Everything you could hope for but 100 times better than that! The house is clean, spacious, very comfortable, with American-sized living areas and amenities and lots of enchanting surprises. The first is the rooftop deck from which you can see the beautiful volcano in one direction or the vast lake of Pucon from the other. Completely unobstructed views that made gazing down on the New Year's Eve fireworks by the lake an experience not to be missed. Sunsets in the jacuzzi on the roof are like going to heaven! The gardens are gorgeous, the places to sit and relax while enjoying the views from indoors or out are spectacular. We couldn't decide which view or what time of day we liked best from the house as each was magical -- including the crystal clear night skies where the Milky Way and shooting stars could easily be seen by the naked eye. We had a great time and my husband commented to me that next time in Pucon means next time at this fabulous house! Thank you for sharing it with us!
Majestic. Artistic. Beautiful. Relaxing. Wildlife sanctuary. These are some of the words that come to mind after spending a week at Gracias a la Vida. I will review the (1) grounds,
(2) the house, (3) and conclude with four helpful recommendations.
-GROUNDS: The house is in a large property with beautiful gardens and hills, placed strategically to provide breathtaking views of the Villarica Volcano and the Lake. The gardens have been carefully designed with colorful flowers that attract bees, hummingbirds, and a variety of beautiful birds. Our kids loved playing with the cats. You will see Hindu and Buddhist statues that add an Asian flavor to the gardens. The caretaker’s house and the other rental cabin are far enough as not to affect privacy or the view. It is very peaceful and pleasant to the eye, and also a dream location for nature photographers!
-HOUSE: The house was carefully and beautifully designed with open spaces, large windows, and glass doors. When we woke up the first morning and saw the lake and volcano views, we could not avoid saying repeatedly “wow, how beautiful!” We loved waking up in the morning with a full view of the lake and wildlife. We loved taking showers while seeing the volcano as if it was perfectly placed centered in the window for our enjoyment. We also loved using the washer and dryer to do laundry while still having a nice view of the volcano. The wall colors and the art displayed in each room created an atmosphere that celebrated beauty. We even enjoyed small details like the handles of the glass doors and windows, the beautiful copper sinks, the double shower heads, and the wooden ceiling. The spacious deck on the flat roof provided amazing views, so we could have dinner while enjoying the sunset or relax in the Jacuzzi while enjoying the night sky. The house is in itself a piece of art. Indeed, an unforgettable experience!
-RECOMMENDATIONS: (1) If you plan to do face time, skype calls, synchronize files through dropbox, or watch Netflix, plan to double or triple the internet package. The internet access is not unlimited; rather, you have to buy a package that allows you to only use the amount of data you paid for. (2) Take ear plugs if you are a light sleeper like me. Windy nights can wake you up. (3) Bring extra toilet paper if staying for several days. The rental only includes initial supply. (4) Spend some days just enjoying Gracias a la Vida without having to go out. You’ll love it.
