You are in a National Park area- This is the most beautiful part of Iceland -With its glistening white cone visible from Reykjavík on a clear day, Snæfellsjökull is the most potent and enduring symbol of Snæfellsnes. If the glacier weren't there, however, the manifold wonders of Snæfellsnes would stand out just the same. Snæfellsjökull, (1,446 m) an ancient cone volcano, one of finest mountains in Iceland. An impressive sight from as far away as Reykjavík, from where it can be seen in clear weather, seeming to rise from the sea. Many prehistoric eruptions took place in the glacier-covered crater at its peak, and its slopes are covered with lava. The glacier is fairly easy to climb, about 4-6 hours to the highest peak, Þúfur. At the eastern base is a Tourist Association hut, now in ruins. The glacier dominates the area, the western part of which is covered with lava and known as “under the glacier”. In Jules Verne’s novel, A Journey to the Centre of the Earth.

We spent one week at this spotlessly clean cottage. It is all new with an open floor plan downstairs with many windows to let in the views and light and bedrooms upstairs. The kitchen was well equipped with everything needed as well as comfortable beds and good black out shades in case one is traveling during the summer months. The cottage is located very near to the national park and easy access to the glacier. Many trails and hiking are available as well as horseback riding. The landscape is dramatic but is only about 2 hours from Reykjavik. Every morning we awoke to see the glacier covered mountain and hear the birds singing in the grass; the crashing of the waves on the rugged shoreline and the full moon lulled us to sleep or the winds in the eves pass over you in this cozy location. There is a small cafe nearby with reasonable prices but it is best to bring food for cooking larger meals. At times, horses or sheep may wander by to say hello. A great getaway and interesting. In winter because of the lack of ambient light, norther lights can be seen here. The town has about 10 permanent residents in winter so it feels remote, but the cottage and location make it very convenient.
Georgeous quiet place with great great great view on both the ocean and Snaefellness (and northern lights)! The cottage is amazingly comfortable (especially the bed and the downstairs sofa) and very well equipped (oven, microwave, washing machine and dryer, tv with lots of DVD, board games, toys and books). I planned to stay four days but it was so great and cosy that I spent 17 days there! Gestur was very kind and flexible and always answers in short delay. The cottage was clean and in perfect condition. There is also a small cafe 5 min walk. I could not recommand it highly enough!
Beautiful cottage and location. The moment we turned on the road and saw those cottages in the distance, set between the mountains and the ocean, felt like a dream. We were 4 adults (2 couples) and stayed here for 4 nights. It was a great home base for visiting the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. We also saw the Northern Lights shine bright above and all over the sky on the first 2 nights. Spectacular! Time went by too fast and was sad to leave. Felt peaceful, relaxing and the scenery all around that area is awe-inspiring. Thank you Gestur! and thank you for your communications during our booking and stay.
We stayed in this wonderful comfortable cottage for one week! It was the perfect spot for exploring West Iceland! The village of Hellnar is gorgeous. There are 3 restaurants/cafes within walking distance from the cottage. The walk along the bird cliffs to Arnarstapi is magnificent!! The cottage was very bright and airy and had everything needed for cooking meals. The collection of DVDs was great for the few times we opted to just hang out. It is important to know that the TV area and master bedroom are upstairs while the kitchen, dining area and bathroom are downstairs. The steps are a bit steep but designed well with good sturdy handrails. My husband and I are both in our 60's and had no problems navigating the stairs.
Gestur was wonderful and very responsive to our every need. I highly recommend this wonderful cottage!!
Recently my family and I had the pleasure of spending a few weeks in Iceland. During this stay we had the privilege of staying at some amazing locations. The sights and sounds of the country were beautiful and our host just made that experience even better. We arrived to find our accommodations just as we expected and during our stay were provided with great recommendations for sights to see. I would highly recommend staying at Gestur’s cottage again. Thank you for be such a great host and we could not ask for a better place to stay in Hellnar.
The cottage is lovely and very comfortable; a really wonderful place to stay, moreso because it is off the beaten path and the experience of Iceland is unfiltered. The kitchen in the cottage is convenient, nicely decorated and well equipped. I really loved staying here. Gestur, the owner, is a kind person who truly wants his guests to enjoy their stay; he was available by text whenever I needed him. I would definitely stay here again.
The REST of this is NOT a review of the cottage, but advice for Americans. This is a WONDERFUL place to stay. Besides the wonders of the national park (which I wasn't able to experience much because of the weather) It's near several places where you can ride Icelandic horses. The cafe in town -- the Primus Cafe (named after the hero in <Under the Glacier> a book by Iceland's nobel prize winning writer, Malldor Laxness) serves delicious food; I had the best meatballs I've ever eaten. The views are beautiful and there are hiking trails everywhere.
It just happens that my stay there coincided with a chilly spring storm that lasted three days. This meant wind, rain hitting the house at a 90 degree angle, and fog so I never saw the mountain while I was staying at the cottage. I mention this because, much as I wish the weather had been better, I feel I experienced real Iceland. Be prepared with things you like to do; warm, water-proof clothes, a sense of humor and patience if you visit during a "shoulder" season.
Details about the cottage for AMERICANS. The first floor in a European house is UPSTAIRS. I knew this and had forgotten it. The stairs in the cottage -- Norweigian stairs -- are steep and difficult for anyone with bad knees.
Washers and dryers in Europe operate on a different principle than washers and dryers in the US. Washers use less water and run longer. Dryers EXTRACT water more than they "dry" laundry so they take much longer to dry cloths than "our" dryers do. Because you have use of the washer and dryer for your own clothes, give yourself several hours to get your wash done unless the sun is shining and you can hang them on the line! :)
Wi-fi -- it was difficult for me to get my iPad to find the wi-fi reliably. My friend, who had her laptop, had no problems at all. This is something to be prepared for. It was a good thing for me not to be online all the time. Between that and the weather I found myself working on a story that, for months, I'd been unable to continue.
I was sorry to leave. <3
