Relaxing peaceful birthday treat weekend
Stepping into the cottage we felt immediately at home, it’s very old and authentic with a lovely wood burner and spectacular views of the sea. In the morning you hear nothing but birdsong, the wind and the ocean. It has loads of amazing homely touches, especially the woodwork in the kitchen and bathroom. It was the perfect getaway from the city and ideal for hiking straight out of the front door. As surfers it was ideal as it’s positioned near some fantastic breaks. We’ll certainly be back!
Hi Andrew, so pleased you enjoyed Kips! One of the reasons we bought it was because we're a surfing family too. Hope to see you again :) Robyn and the Hughes family
Nice cottage warm and comfortable some areas could do with updating but overall a lovely cottage and location. and yes we would go back
Many thanks for the positive review Gary, so pleased you enjoyed your stay and would come back!

Beautiful, amazing remote location
We enjoyed our stay on Kirtomy. Kip's cottage was just as described. It had everything we needed. The location was incredible! Lots of walking opportunities and coastal strolls! The only complaint that I have is that the cottage could have been cleaner. I felt that I had to do a general wipe down in order to feel comfortable. Once we got over that issue, everything else was just fine.
Hi David, thanks for the 4 stars, and so pleased you had a good time. Sincere apologies regard the cleaning - it's been a busy season and we obviously need to do a deep clean, which I've asked our team up there to do now. Thanks again, Robyn and the Hughes Family
We enjoyed staying at this cottage. The French glass doors in the dining room/kitchen provide a wonderful viewing spot to look out at the ocean. Sunny or rainy, it is an awesome view. The cottage is rustic and cosy with heaters if you get cold. There are beautiful original slate floors in the living room with some throw carpets over them so you can still see the slate floor which is truly beautiful. We enjoyed walking around Kirtomy Bay and there is a path that takes you to Swordly. A 5 minute walk from the cottage there is a building that used to be the Schoolhouse in Kirtomy which is now a private residence but the person who lives there, the local Doctor also cooks and has a dining area in that building where if you book (well in advance) you can partake in an incredible 7 to 9 set course fine dining experience with optional wine pairings (only certain evenings) at Cote Du Nord & there is web site, Google Cote du Nord Kirtomy. Each course is based on local produce as well as foraged herbs/plants from the natural surroundings. When booking let them know your preference seafood/meat/veggie and they do their best to accommodate. Also we booked a walk/hike with the highlife ranger which was a fantastic experience. These walks/hikes range from a few hours easy walks to more strenuous ones and they are by donation the site says it costs about 10.00 pounds per person to put on the walks so that is what we donate. Google their website under highlife highland Scottish rangers and look in upcoming events. You can book online or if you have trouble booking on it (Like us) then email the ranger in advance (we did it 2 days in advance) and confirm the exact meet-up place and the ranger signs you up on the sheet on the day. One of our best experiences was a 3 hour hike up the side of the hill overlooking Loch Eriboll to a 2000YR old wheel house on a windy day with some showers with the sun appearing now and then throwing dappled light onto the Loch. We brought collapsible hiking sticks/hiking books/waterproof windbreaker/pants to be comfortable. These hikes are awesome. You don’t have to be a mountaineer you just need to be able to walk up hill and some are noted a rough ground hikes or easier hikes. The Strathnaver Museum which is about a 20 minute drive from Kirtomy towards Bettyhill should not be missed, it is staffed by volunteers and provides information about the history of this area of Scotland in the county of Sutherland. It has artefacts,
Thanks so much Tammy, love all the tips for visitors, we are going to do some of these too :) All the best, Robyn and the Hughes Family
Peaceful, relaxing get-away.
Family of four stayed for four nights. Great to be off the grid and away from it all. The weather behaved itself for the duration. Wonderful scenery, already we are considering returning again in the future.
Many thanks Don, please come back any time! Robyn and the Hughes Family
A peaceful place to stay....far from fast life !
We can’t wait to be there again soon!
Thanks so much Giuseppe, so pleased you enjoyed it! All the best, The Hughes Family
The area is an outdoor paradise with mountains to climb, fish to catch, beaches to roam, waves to ride and wildlife to spot. There are several rivers within a short drive – Naver, Borgie, Strathy and Halladale - all which offer good salmon fishing and also there is a myriad of lochs, streams and estuaries to explore.
