About Dennis Sheffield

My name is Dennis Sheffield. (2nd from the left between Earnest T. Bass and Barn). I have lived in Nashville since 1991 but am originally from Marianna Florida, a small town in the panhandle about 50 miles north of the Gulf Coast. (Florida State Seminole Country - 1981 Alum) I own a promotional products and T-Shirt business, and am one of the top Traeger Wood Fired Grill Dealers in the South. I know how to sing a good song and can tell funny jokes. I'm single and in search of a wealthy 90 something (female) to marry with a really bad cough.

Dennis Sheffield purchased this cabin in 1997

Why Dennis Sheffield chose Big South Fork

After living on the North Florida Gulf Coast and observing what made vacation rentals succeed, I spent years looking for a new development in the Tennessee mountains. I wanted undiscovered country since Gatlinburg reminded me too much of Panama City Beach. Sharing space, restaurants and Highways with millions of tourists was not my idea of relaxing. While driving in North East Tennessee one weekend I happened onto the Big South Fork National River and Recreational Area after being lost. This was the beautiful secluded river with high bluffs, incredible natural settings (but no tourists) I had dreamed about. Bought the land, created a large pond between the ridges and built a fantastic log home. The legendary singer/song writer, Tom T. Hall, liked it so much he said I could name it after him if he and Dixie could stay and write songs from time to time. Great folks - very generous arrangement.

What makes this cabin unique

This is the most relaxing place you could ever imagine. I tell people there's nothing to do but ya don't have enough time to do it all. I usually never leave the cabin for days at a time after hiking, swimming, fishing, love cooking in that incredible well stocked kitchen, grilling and smoking on the Traeger Wood Pellet Grill, reading, and playing music. There is a great Yamaha upright piano that fills the home with harmonics. Sitting in the hot tub gazing at night skies that are like nothing I've ever seen in the south. You can pick out satellites and shooting stars streaming across the heavens. Rocking outside on the covered porches or out on the dock reading while enjoying the north western breezes enjoying the quite solitude makes for the perfect get a way from it all vacation I've ever experienced. It's a hard place to leave once you've unwound. I also wanted to provide a place that families would enjoy for gatherings and vacations. Kids really love the pond and hiking into the Big South Fork Park, horseback trail riding and the train to the old mining camp in Stearns KY are highlights for guests. And of course the Big South Fork River for rafting and white water canoeing is spectacular. There are beautiful hiking trails along the river to Angle Falls and other points that are considered the best trails in the country.

Absolutely the best cabin!!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time staying at the Tom T. Hall cabin. It was a perfect getaway for our family. Our boys are 4 and 6 and they loved exploring around the property, fishing in the lake, canoeing, sleeping in the cozy bunk beds, getting into the hot tub, playing horseshoe, and making s'mores by the fire. Dennis could not have been any nicer. He was so helpful and wanted to make sure that we had everything that we needed. I don't think there is a better cabin than this one. We look forward to coming back next year.

Owner's Response: Wow! Thanks so much Julie for breaking in the brand new granite counter tops (I haven't seen them yet) and these incredibly kind words. You were terrific renters and I can't wait to have you all back for a longer stay.

BEAUTIFUL!

  • 5 of 5

This was such a wonderful rental! The cabin is well decorated- modern/rustic lodge feel with throwbacks to Tom T Hall! So cool! The kitchen was so well stocked, beds were comfortable, location was secluded but not too far away. The pond was such a treat to look at and the dock has amazing chairs for relaxing.

I will absolutely be back!

Great cabin, roomy and comfortable. When Dennis says, well stocked he means WELL stocked. We had a very thing we needed and the some. Hit tub was wonderful in evening after long day off reading. We had slight problem with Internet, he answred rugjt away and he had it fixed in few hours. We got to bring our dogs and enjoyed not worrying about them at home. Would definitely stay there again

Beautiful, Private, Every Detail Covered, Dog Friendly, Perfect Family Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

This was by far the best cabin we've ever rented! Dennis was super responsive and friendly during the booking process, and as soon as we walked in the door of the property we could tell he has put a great deal of time and thought into what his renters would need. The cabin is laid out really well, it's beautiful inside, and the place is the best stocked rental we've ever seen. Dennis thought of everything. Every kitchen tool you'll ever need, satellite tv, cozy linens & comfy beds, upgraded shower heads, hair dryers, board games, fishing poles... even thoughtfully placed bottle openers and sticks for roasting marshmallows. We visited for 3 nights, during winter, and we were totally entertained the entire time without having to leave the property. Our toddler absolutely loved fishing, the canoe, roasting marshmallows in the fire pit and the hot tub. It was also so nice to be able to bring our dog with us. Usually any trip is accompanied with the stress and cost of finding him a nice place to stay while we are gone. This time we were able to take off last-minute with no hassle. We will absolutely be renting again and will be bringing friends and family with us. Such a quick 3 hour drive from Nashville- this will be a go-to for us! Thank you Dennis!

Owner's Response: The shower heads are pretty cool... don't know what else to say about that since you covered it pretty well. You were the first to use the new bottle opener on the bottom deck but we'll keep 'em in suspense on why it's worth bringing up. Really enjoyed getting to know you even though you aren't the international super star you share a name with. This is a wonderful review and I can't thank you enough. Get back over there!

Perfect setting, great home

  • 5 of 5

Recently came for a short guys weekend and couldn't have been happier. The front yard is very flat with lots of open space, but still secluded. The pond out back is awesome. The home is perfect and the Traeger pellet smoker is aweome, we did a brisket and BBQ and it was super easy. Overall great property and we will definitely be back.
