Photos and Description of this Taos holiday house

2 bedrooms, 1 1/2 bathrooms, sleeps 4

This secluded Rio Grande Casita puts the Great Outdoors at your doorstep. The views from the property are unmatched. This traditional village borders both the Rio Grande and the southern Rocky Mountains. Centrally located to sites in Santa Fe, Taos, and southern Colorado, it is a quick, scenic 20 minute drive to Taos, an hour drive from 4 popular ski areas, and a key location for birders, rock climbers, kayakers, and other outdoor enthusiasts. Archaeologists and geologists visit the area to explore cultural sites and rock formations. Artists set up easels along the riverbanks painting the rich colors and dramatic landscapes.

Skip the crowded condo scene and enjoy breathtaking scenery while grilling out on the patio or just kicking back on the screened veranda. Modern kitchen and spacious living area feature brick floors, kiva fireplace, and hand-crafted furniture. Perfect for a romantic getaway or for letting your children enjoy the freedom of natural surroundings.

Winter/Spring Conditions: Winter/Spring in Pilar can be the best time to visit. There are six nearby ski resorts with skiing and snow boarding. Travel time from the casita varies from 45 minutes to a little over an hour. The nearby Orilla Verde Recreation is quiet with returning bald eagles and other wildlife. Of course, summer can be exquisite. Cool nights give way to warm days and the quintessential azure skies of Northern New Mexico.

Taos hosts numerous seasonal festivals featuring regional art, food, and spirits.

Location Details: The casita is located at the end of a private road about 600 feet from the river. It is bordered by BLM land on two sides and is surrounded by mixed conifer trees that offer peace and privacy.

This is a rental by owner. We live next door, 200 feet away, and we are happy to assist visitors with any details regarding their trip to the Taos area.

About Bruce and Meg Peterson

Meg and Bruce have lived in the area for 35 years. We raised both our daughters here, and they attended school in Taos. One is a physician, the other a geo-physicist, proof that the public schools are good! Meg is a retired elementary school principal and writer; Bruce is a manager at Los Alamos Laboratory. We are both private people and very respectful of the privacy of our guests, though we are available to answer any questions about the history, geology, wildlife, hiking opportunities, and our favorite restaurants. If you're into birds, Meg will happily take you birding along the Rio!

Why Bruce and Meg Peterson chose New Mexico

We moved to Northern New Mexico three decades ago because of the stunning beauty, closeness to nature, and richness of its cultures. And we wanted to build a traditional adobe. At the time, we shared the romantic notion we could make a living here as a writer (Meg) and a cabinetmaker (Bruce). While we both had to get practical employment, we remain true to our roots.

What makes this house unique

We believe the views from the property are completely unique and stunning and probably responsible for my daughter becoming a geologist. The vastness of the panorama can be a bit overwhelming for those new to the area, but the region has been settled since the 1600s when the Spanish arrived. That said, the addition of our hot tub has been inspirational. Nothing like viewing all this natural beauty while soaking tired bones!

Great attention to detail!

  • 5 of 5

The house was well stocked with different spices, coffee, tea, oil and other small food items that facilitated meal preparation and reduced trips to the grocery store miles and miles away. We also appreciated have a well stocked kitchen with different types of pots, pans and cooking and baking items. This attention to the smaller details of accommodating guests was wonderful!

Books, brochures, maps and magazines of northern New Mexico was extremely helpful in planning our day trips to sight seeing and off-road driving through the mountains.

We had a most enjoyable four-night stay and are planning to do it again next year.

Thank you for great hospitality!

Amazing, wonderful casita!

  • 5 of 5

It would be hard to overstate how much we enjoyed the Casita last week! The pictures are spot on...the views really are that wonderful and the Casita really is that comfortable. We loved grilling outside for dinner many evenings. The kitchen had everything we needed. The hot tub is very private and the stars are spectacular. We were fortunate to be there for a meteor shower! I've never seen anything like it. Bruce & Meg stopped by once to check on us...and later left delicious cookies that we devoured! They were easy to communicate with before and during our stay. The Casita is very close to rafting/kayaking (we loved New Mexico River Adventures), terrific hiking and three wineries. We highly recommend and can't wait to get back!

Where else can you stay in a beautiful casita in the Rio Grande gorge?

  • 5 of 5

My family has visited the Petersons' Casita three times over the past five years. The house itself is beautiful and lovingly cared for. It's right at the edge of the Orilla Verde recreation area, which offers rafting, fishing, and most important a whole bunch of hikes past marvelous gorges and ancient petroglyphs. Only about twenty minutes from one of the best vineyards in New Mexico (La Chiripada). Of the many places we've rented in different parts of the world over the past years, this is our favorite!

Delightful Rural Charm

  • 5 of 5

On this fifth trip into the Taos area we chose to stay in the Rio Grande River Gorge Casita. In Pilar. I so like this name. A great choice it was. With rural charm, set into the slope of the East side mesa of the Rio Grande, the adobe Casita was surrounded by a forest of pine and juniper...and large basalt boulders. The trees lent a sense of privacy. Oh, and the views up and down river...every light variation was a different view.

Inside, the rustic Casita was clean, well appointed and provisioned. The Casita and location fit our needs like a tailored glove. I must also mention that the hot tub-star gazing was spectacular.

Much of our time was out and about, hiking, plein air painting, photographing, birding, visiting petroglyphs sites (incredible), meeting the locals at the Blue Heron Brewery (trivia night), soaking our bones at Ojo Caliente, a Sante Fe museum, gallery, with lunch at the Shed. It was always pleasant to return home, start the small wood fire, pour two glasses of La Chiripada award winning wine (Dixon), and talk about the day. I also need to mention the Sugar Nymphs Bistro and Leigh's paintings across the street (Penasco on the High Road.) ... It doesn't get much better than this.

Wonderful Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I drove through a Colorado blizzard with white-out conditions and were wonderfully rewarded with a stay at Meg and Bruce's casita. The pictures truly do not do it justice. The place is gorgeous, super clean, has a well-stocked pantry, a vast choice of pots/pans/dishes, very cozy, and has a true southwestern feel from ceiling to floor and wall to wall. We were originally scheduled for a 3 night stay but had to cut our trip short by one day because of a weather report predicting more snow near our home; we did not want to drive through another storm. Meg was extremely generous and offered us an additional night's stay for free if we had decided to stay to wait out the storm. Since we were already headed home when we spoke, we were unable to accept. Meg also refunded the third night we were unable to use! Incredible thoughtfulness that we so gratefully appreciated. We will return! Thank you Meg and Bruce! We will highly recommend this casita to friends and family.

Pilar is a quiet New Mexican village located on NM route 68 south of Taos. River sports, biking, hiking, and bird watching are a few of the summer activities. Winter skiing is nearby in Taos, Santa Fe, Los Alamos, and Sipapu. In addition to outdoor fun, the nearby towns boast numerous fine dining restaurants, art galleries, museums, and southwestern cultural points of interest. There are numerous festivals throughout the year including San Geronimo Day at Taos Pueblo, Indian Market in Santa Fe, and a Fall Balloon Rally in both Taos and Albuquerque.

Other Activities: Hiking, birdwatching, kayaking, rafting, Anasazi petroglyph sites, cultural and historical museums

Golf: The Taos Country Club is an easy, picturesque 15-minute drive from the casita. The Club features incredible 360 degree views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the Taos mesa.
