About Bill Michels

We are a Twin Cities architect and artist who are always thrilled to spend family time in Duluth. The House and Cottage on Park Point is our little place away from home to do that. We have enjoyed remodeling and updating the house and cottage and turning it into a comfortable home with a relaxing livable atmosphere. It's given us the opportunity to do something a little different that we can share with everyone else.

Bill Michels purchased this house in 2005

Why Bill Michels chose Park Point

The beach is like nothing else in this part of the country, it's like being at the ocean. The water is warm enough to swim in, you can walk forever, and the infamous MN mosquito's are practically non existent because of the breezes off the lake. It's certainly a bonus to be a 15 minute walk down the beach to Canal Park or a short drive to the North Shore of Lake Superior.

What makes this house unique

We are just a bit unique in that there are two units we rent together. Put the kids in one or even grandma if she prefers to have her own quarters. Sometimes it's just a fight to see who gets the cottage!

And of course the location- beach, Canal Park, Lake Superior, the North Shore, restaurants...!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hey Bill,Just wanted to let you know....Anyhow that is a gorgeous place, it was the coolest design and decorating, I fell in love with it. I just wanted you to know that you did an excellent job, I felt like it was from a magazine. Thank you for letting us stay in your rental and for letting us bring our pets. We had a great time, and will tell everyone about the greatest place in Duluth. Thanks again.Megan

Great Location, Fun Property, Comfy Home

  • 5 of 5

Being an artist and designer myself, I truly appreciated the clever yet practical things, not to mention the art, that the owners of this home did to enlarge and decorate this once tiny abode. I also appreciated the comforts and conveniences that the owners provide for their guests. I will rent this home again if I can find a time on their calendar that is not booked!!

We were there February 11-14 and despite the snow and cold at the time we were warm and cozy. We took the snowy trail through the back yard to the dunes and the lake. What a treat! While they say that the home sleeps 11 (and certainly between the house and the cottage there are plenty of beds) this was perfect for 3 people, everyone getting their own bedroom and bathroom. Even better for 2 people with a nice old dog.

My favorite room was the dining room and you will have to book it to get a look. And those memory foam beds upstairs, well that was a big surprise. Enough said. Good luck finding a date for your own visit.

Owner's Response: Thank you Sue for such a detailed review our our sweet getaway on the sandy shores of Duluth! I often wonder how many times "small groups" skip past our property when looking for a place to stay. We have one couple who has been staying with us for the past five years, I think they stayed with us seven times last year! I'm hoping you can be our next most popular guest!

Fun times in the cabin

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was very comfortable and well equipped. The main house has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and a loft with a bed upstairs. I took my elderly grandmother with us and was very pleased that the separate one story cabin in the back of the main cabin had a bathroom so she did not have to climb stairs. The back cabin is charming with 2 bedrooms, living room, bathroom, kitchenette and foyer area. The location is close to restaurants, stores and entertainment. The back yard leads to Lake Superior which is amazing. If going in March or mid April to explore Lake Superior in the yard be sure to bring high snow boots as your step will be buried in snow 1/2 way up to your knees . The owner made sure the pathways to the house and back cabin were clear of snow. There are tons of boardgames and books for your pleasure. The tv has about 5 viewing channels and a cabinet full of DVD's. The owner is very easy to get a hold of. We enjoyed our stayed and made wonderful memories. P.S. Most all houses in the area are two stories and it would be difficult to find one that has 2 bedrooms and a bathroom downstairs if bringing along elderly people which made this cabin ideal for us.

Everything we expected and more!

  • 5 of 5

Stayed here with a large group of friends and it was perfect! Plenty of sleeping areas for everyone and everyone had ample space to eat, sit and relax.

I did not spend much time in the cottage but understand it was quiet and comfortable. The walk to the lake was longer than I was expecting but Still very close.

The kitchen was a little small but was well equipped and had more than enough pots, pans, silverware and flatware for everyone.

We expect to get another group to head up to Duluth in the summer and will look to stay here again for the close proximity to the lake, canal park, downtown and everything else Duluth has to offer! Great host, great house, great location!

Great winter weekend getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying here! Had 10 adults and plenty of room and 3 showers which was great for 10 people. And only a short walk to Lake Superior which we enjoyed. Would recommend!

Wonderful spot - wonderful owner!

  • 5 of 5

A group of us stayed here for the second year in a row during early March. Duluth always keeps us on our toes in the winter weather-wise, but both the house and cottage are cozy and the bonfire pit provides some outdoor space as well if it's not too windy. The kitchen is well-stocked and the dining room table easily seats a large group. The owner, Bill, is responsive, flexible and very kind. I can only imagine how great this place would be in summer. We will definitely be back!
