|Minimum Stay||3 nights|
A small cozy villa with 2 bedrooms on the mezzanine floor. One double bed and one with 2 single beds. The villa is built on the sandy beach of Marathi a few meters from the sea. A small cafe is attached to the villa. Perfect for people that want everything easy.
Both villas are located in the area of Akrotiri, a large peninsula in Chania, Crete.
Villa Tzivaeri is an old stone Venetian style mansion, with a huge private court yard, partly paved with stone, located in the village of Sternes, 2km from the sandy beach of Marathi and 5 km from the airport.
Villa Marathoula is placed on the sandy beach of Marathi, next to our own small café that we run all season. Only a few steps away from the water!
First...George and Tasoula were wonderful hosts! We took the ferry over from Santorini, got into Heraklion late and had about a 90 minute drive over to Marathi. George called us on our way and met us in Souda so we could follow him to the house. I'm not sure we would have found it in the dark! :-) It was near 11 when George fetched us--and given how early he needed to be up, we were VERY appreciative of his willingness to meet us at the late hour. Everyone was so kind and helpful and it would have been a joy to stay there--even if the home hadn't been so adorable (Like Freddy! )
The house is incredibly cute and has everything we needed to be comfortable and enjoy our time on Crete. We especially enjoyed the outdoor space--and spent most of our evenings playing cards either in their restaurant--enjoying the food and a beer--or at the table in the porch of the house. The beach by the house was great--not crowded and the water was clear and crisp. The house is located about 15 minutes to Chania. Chania has some lovely restaurants and some nice shopping, as well as nice maritime museum--which I would highly recommend visiting. There is a man in the museum who does all the ship models by hand. He eagerly invited people in to watch him work and show how he puts them together and the materials he uses. It was fascinating and amazing--the incredible detail of the boats.
The house is located about 90 minutes or so from Heraklion--but things are well marked and the roads are very nice compared to other places we have been. We didn't have much trouble driving or finding our way around. It's also close to the Chania airport--which was very convenient when we flew back to Athens.
I cannot say enough about our hosts--their kindness and hospitality made our whole trip! I would recommend this house wholeheartedly and hope to be back again!
Thank you again, George and Tasoula (AND FREDDY!) The Minnesota Girls miss you all! :-)
Nadherna vila, nadherne more skveli majitele, vynikajici jidlo, morske plody v tavernach na plazi.Jedine co nam vadilo bylo mnoho lidi na plazi a bocni vyhled na more.
Stayed for 7 days in August 2016 in the apartment at the back of the owners restaurant. What a brilliant find, so close to the beach, perfect for a relaxing week. Everything we needed for an excellent stay was provided including beach towels. It really isn't too good to be true!
We were made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived to the moment we left by George, Tasoula & their family/friends, nothing was too much trouble.
Spent several evenings in the bar either for dinner & drinks or just to have a drink & enjoy the view.
Would highly recommend to anyone wanting to stay in the this part of Crete.
This place is a gem! If you want some quite time away from the city and a lovely beach to relax on....with unremarkable Cretan hospitality...this is IT!!!! Tasoula and her family took exceptional care of our needs while we stayed with them for 3 days and their restaurant which is in front of this beach house was very convenient to grab authentic Cretan cuisine during our stay. The beautiful Marathi beach is right in front of you which is not very crowded which we also loved!! Have all intentions to return one day.
We had a wonderful few days in Crete which exceeded my expectations due to the warmth and kindness of Tasoula, George and family. It is only a short drive from Chania airport (10 - 15 mins) which is great as it meant even though our break was short we had plenty of time to enjoy Crete. The accommodation was exactly as described with little touches that made it very special. The beds were comfortable and the shower good. The family own the restaurant Café Metaxu mas (There is a Facebook page) which is a typically Greek taverna with wonderful food and amazing view as it is right on the beach. The beach is sandy and clean and has sunbeds and shade for hire at 6 Euros for the day with showers too. It is perfect for small children as the water is very calm. The beach is only a short drive from the accommodation sleeping 8 and a few steps from the beachfront guesthouse. I can honestly say that I did not miss having a pool as the beach more than made up for it and was so close. We stayed on the beach all day, there is plenty of shade and there are a three or four restaurants/cafes on Marathi beach where you can have lunch or dinner (very reasonable prices), I can honestly say we did not have a bad meal whilst we were there. The portions are very large and when we thought we had finished we would be given a little extra treat. We were only staying a few days so didn't venture far but I have been assured that there are more wonderful beaches only a short drive away. We also visited Chania which was really interesting and had a walk around the old town and harbour. The family were so welcoming and helped us with anything we needed, providing us with fruit, a fridge full of goodies and oranges to turn into fresh orange juice. Thank you so much and I am recommending your properties to all my friends, hopefully we will be back soon.
Visited for 7 days in late May 2016 after extensive research and we were not disappointed. My wife, two teenager daughters and I stayed in the Marathi villa and highly recommend this property to anyone that wants a great base of operations for exploring Crete or wants to simply chill on the beach or wants to do both.
We arrived on an evening flight and it was an easy trip from the Chania airport to the villa. Once arrived, we got to experience the warmth of the hosts right away. They had provided us with all the necessities to live on our own -including some food, drinks, towels, etc.- but even better, the restaurant that they own, Metaxumas, is attached to the villa! We threw on our bathing suits and headed to their restaurant and had a great spread of tzaziki, fresh vegetables, nice bread, meatballs, and more. We were then able to jump into the blue water of the protected Marathi beach cove.
The villa is located in the back and on the second floor of the owners' restaurant and is very well done. The pictures in the review are accurate. My wife does not like to "rough it" and she didn't have to here. The quality of the furnishings, equipment, bedding, linens, and provisions were all high quality. From the second floor, you can look down on the restaurant patio and to the beach and Souda Bay. It's beautiful.
For the next 6 days, we took trips to places like Falarsina, Herakion, Samaria Gorge, Sfakia, Chania, Aptera, etc. By staying in Marathi, you have good access to the island but you are also nicely secluded. Marathi can get crowded but not nearly as bad as other places and the hosts and the villa are so comfy that we never felt bothered. Lots of people enjoyed the restaurant while we were there but there was never a noise problem or other annoyances. We cooked in a couple nights, had a few meals at the restaurant (which was great and super convenient), and ate elsewhere a few times. I said, "thank goodness I booked this place instead of that other place" several times.
In addition to the great place, we really enjoyed meeting and interacting with the owners and their friends and family. Tasoula is who we dealt with on VRBO/HomeAway and is married to George, whom we mostly interacted with while there. Maria and Demetrius are Tasoula's parents and are the warm and excellent head-honchos at the restaurant. Fredy is the cute kid/grandkid. The Harma beer that they serve is delicious.
100% recommended! Tell them Jason says hi!
Sternes is a charming, traditional village situated on the Akrotiri peninsula of Chania, with outstanding views towards the Bay of Souda and White Mountains of Crete. Although a peaceful and exclusive area, it is easily accessible being only 10 kilometers from the historic City of Chania, 5km from the international airport and 12km from the port of Souda. The area is an ideal place to relax and unwind, and has caffes, mini markets and tavernas nearby.
Loutraki, just 2.5km away from the villa, is a small sandy beach with emerald color and wave-less sea, is popular for the Loutraki Beach bar, offering sunbeds and parasols on a long grass area just above the sea, on the side of the beach.
Marathi, a wonderful sandy beach and seaside small village where seafood is unbeatable, next to Loutraki also 2.5km from the villa.
