Sternes is a charming, traditional village situated on the Akrotiri peninsula of Chania, with outstanding views towards the Bay of Souda and White Mountains of Crete. Although a peaceful and exclusive area, it is easily accessible being only 10 kilometers from the historic City of Chania, 5km from the international airport and 12km from the port of Souda. The area is an ideal place to relax and unwind, and has caffes, mini markets and tavernas nearby.

Loutraki, just 2.5km away from the villa, is a small sandy beach with emerald color and wave-less sea, is popular for the Loutraki Beach bar, offering sunbeds and parasols on a long grass area just above the sea, on the side of the beach.

Marathi, a wonderful sandy beach and seaside small village where seafood is unbeatable, next to Loutraki also 2.5km from the villa.

Lovely small but tastefully decorated and equipped house behind a Taverna next to a beautiful beach . The service received from the owners of the house and cafe was probably the best service that we have ever received in over 40 years of travelling . Lovely family . There is an ATM attached to the cafe , the cafe is absolutely fine, does large portions of good food but is a bit limited , there are several other restaurants nearby including a specialist fish one .They allowed us to run a week long food and drink tab . The beach is spotless there are sunbeds, and shades to hire for 3 euro a day and the sea is safe , calm and gently shelves away .Beach towels are provided . Marathi is 99% Greek families , busy at the weekends , relatively quiet in the week, but we did go after the school holidays . Everywhere takes UK credit/ debit cards . the house is situated about 20 minutes quiet and easy drive from Chania airport . Overall, whilst the house was a bit small for 4 adults , and was not cheap to hire , it was worth every penny for the location and service , we would love to go back, and thank everybody there for making our stay so great . Recommended without hesitation . The Oakley family UK

Highly recommended, well presented house beside a beautiful beach with clear sea and mountain views.

  • 5 of 5

We spent a very relaxing week in this house at Marathi beach with our 6 and 8 year old. The house was beautifully finished and styled, well-appointed and very clean. We spent a lot of our time on the beach 1 min walk away. The beach is pretty with crystal clear, warm water and very safe for children. There is a lovely view of the mountains. We managed happily without a car - George kindly took us to do a grocery shop and we used the 40 min bus service to get to Chania and back twice. Chania has a beautiful Venetian harbour area and is well worth visiting. We also ate well in the local restaurants, including the restaurant that the house backs onto. The owners and staff in this restaurant were extremely hospitable and friendly - we were given cake, eggs, honey and a local dish! We loved our stay at Marathoula beach house and would highly recommend it.

Just great

  • 5 of 5

Location is great. It's a nice kids friendly beach with very clean water and a nice view of the mountains across the bay. Lovely!

The place is clean and well equipped. My kids loved sleeping in the "princesses beds" :)

The hosts left us a fridge packed with beers and soft drinks and we took full advantage of that! Thank you!

There are a few restaurants in front of the house. We tried them all and all were good. We loved Matxu Mas, the restaurant owned by the same family that is renting the guest house. Good vibe, good food, good people!

But most of all, the hosts were amazing. Due to some bad luck, I had to see a doctor on a Tuesday and I couldn't drive myself. I messaged George (Tasoula's husband) asking if he can help. I didn't realize he has a different day job. He was extremely kind and took time off from his job and drove me to the hospital, where he also served as the translator. This story will stay with me forever ...

We loved our vacation in Crete, and we especially loved Tasoula and George's hospitality and kindness!

Perfect location and extremely welcoming hosts

  • 5 of 5

The property is a maisonette that is the backroom and upstairs rooms of the cafe bar owned by the hosts. It is a fifty foot walk from the bedroom to the beach- accross a shaded terrace. The two owners are great, meeting us late at the airport, answering all our questions, and telling us the places to go. Marathas is a locals place, busy at the weekends with families from Chania. Extremely relaxing place for a break- a car is a must.

There are three bars in easy walking distance . The beach is great.

This is the perfect place for anyone looking for a stress free break in a very friendly place

Fantastic people, fantastic place, Fantastic time!

  • 5 of 5

First...George and Tasoula were wonderful hosts! We took the ferry over from Santorini, got into Heraklion late and had about a 90 minute drive over to Marathi. George called us on our way and met us in Souda so we could follow him to the house. I'm not sure we would have found it in the dark! :-) It was near 11 when George fetched us--and given how early he needed to be up, we were VERY appreciative of his willingness to meet us at the late hour. Everyone was so kind and helpful and it would have been a joy to stay there--even if the home hadn't been so adorable (Like Freddy! )

The house is incredibly cute and has everything we needed to be comfortable and enjoy our time on Crete. We especially enjoyed the outdoor space--and spent most of our evenings playing cards either in their restaurant--enjoying the food and a beer--or at the table in the porch of the house. The beach by the house was great--not crowded and the water was clear and crisp. The house is located about 15 minutes to Chania. Chania has some lovely restaurants and some nice shopping, as well as nice maritime museum--which I would highly recommend visiting. There is a man in the museum who does all the ship models by hand. He eagerly invited people in to watch him work and show how he puts them together and the materials he uses. It was fascinating and amazing--the incredible detail of the boats.

The house is located about 90 minutes or so from Heraklion--but things are well marked and the roads are very nice compared to other places we have been. We didn't have much trouble driving or finding our way around. It's also close to the Chania airport--which was very convenient when we flew back to Athens.

I cannot say enough about our hosts--their kindness and hospitality made our whole trip! I would recommend this house wholeheartedly and hope to be back again!

Thank you again, George and Tasoula (AND FREDDY!) The Minnesota Girls miss you all! :-)
