About Jacqueline Murphy
Elite Gîtes was set up in 2005 by husband and wife team, David and Jacqueline Murphy. With our close family, we had rented gîtes in different areas of France and we spent many happy times together experiencing what France has to offer. However, we always felt that staying in a gîte could have been a better experience for us and we are sure you will understand when we say maybe there could have been better kitchen appliances and equipment, perhaps a better standard of accommodation and/or cleanliness or even the beds made up before we arrived – we’re sure you know what we mean! Like many others, we dreamt of having our own gîtes business in France and we wanted to offer the best possible quality gîte you could have at a reasonable rental. To this end, we moved to France in 2002 and have renovated 4 properties - 2 of which formed the basis of Elite Gites property portfolio.r.. Over the past 15 years we have welcomed many satisfied clients to our properties. We now operate just one gite, Le Marronnier, as a rental property and so have more time to concentrate on making it a fabulous holiday base.

Why Jacqueline Murphy chose Fleury-la-Montagne
When we first came to France to view potential properties to buy, we were shown Le Marronnier. It was in a very sad state - nearly everything was decorated dark brown and very shabby. However, we felt that we could update the interior to make a comfortable holiday home given its location in a pretty village in beautiful southern Burgundy. With open plan living downstairs and four good sized bedrooms and smart shower rooms installed upstairs we also knew that this configuration would be ideal for and suit many holidaymakers - whether they are families with young children keen on activities or groups of older travellers looking for tranquility.
What makes this House unique
Le Marronnier dates back about 250 years and was built as a small farmhouse. The original one roomed house is still visible as it is now the sitting room and the current cupboards are where the original door and window were - situated next to the well. The floor above would have been for the storage of hay and the rest of the building would have been for the animals and equipment. Some of the lovely mellow coloured stonework is very old and may have come from even older properties long demolished.. There are even a couple of old stone columns in the garden which may have come from local ruins - maybe even the Benedictine abbey in nearby Charlieu! Later in its history, the house was extended and a barn added. At this time, many people, including the owners of Le Marronnier, made wine and there is still an interesting peephole on the stairs which gave the owners a view to how the wine was fermenting in the cellar. Wine production in Fleury la Montagne has now all but ceased but some people carry on cultivating vines which can be seen on the neighbouring hills. Le Marronnier is ideally situated for visiting vineyards in the Beaujolais, Burgundy , Chalonnais, Maconnais and Roannais wine regions. There are also many pretty Romanesque churches to visit, ancient monasteries and pretty towns and villages for those who like history. For younger visitors, there are several theme parks (some with both rides and exotic animals) within easy driving plus loads of sports to undertake from cycling to canoeing. With the variety of possible activities, the facilities and pleasing décor of the house coupled with its location on the edge of a pretty village not to mention the private swimming pool, makes Le Marronnier an unbeatable choice.

Fabulous farmhouse in rural France
We gad a wonderful stay in this spacious and well equipped farmhouse. The bedrooms were really pretty with lots of room for our things. Very comfortable beds. The pool was a great size and very clean. Views were amazing! All in all a great stay!
Thank you for your great review of our property, Le Marronnier, and for being such great guests. You are welcome back any time!
Quaint house in rural France
We spent a week here at the beginning of July 2019. Jacqueline and David met us on arrival at the property, showed us around, how to work everything, made sure we had everything we needed. They also provided us with a small starter pack of eggs, milk, bread and butter which was super helpful.
We had a great stay here and spent exploring the local area. The village itself has only one bar which doubles up as the pain depot, no shops. We didn't get a chance to eat there, but they do a formule every lunchtime which is very reasonable (could be closed during August due to holidays) Easy enough to drive to the closest supermarket which was an InterMarche.
The house is clean and cool, beds comfortable and rooms of a decent size. All the towels are provided, even the pool towels which is super helpful. It was very hot while we were there and although there is no A/C each room has a fan.
The pool is lovely, in fact it is one of the best pools we have had at a rented house, well maintained and very clean. The pool has an alarm but no perimeter fence as such. Lots of comfy sun loungers as well.
We ate outside most evenings and made use of the rustic BBQ, it was delightful as we got the shade over the terrace. From Fleury we explored Roanne, Beaujeu, Vichy, Paray Le Monial and even a day in Lyon.
There is a 3 michelin star restaurant in Ouche called Troisgros, had we known about it we would have figured out about booking so I'm mentioning it here for any foodies looking to stay at the property. The same family also own a brasserie in Roanne called Le Central. Both restaurants likely to be closed on a Monday.
All in all we enjoyed our time in Fleury La Montagne an d would recommend for a group of friends or a family stay.
Thank you for your positive review of our gîte. Yasmin and her family were great and kept in touch throughout the period between reservation and arriving at the property. They really looked after our property and it was a pleasure having them to stay.
Hostess with the mostest
We came across this property unexpectedly as our previously booked holiday home was cancelled leaving us little time to re-book. This looked absolutely perfect and we hoped we would find what we expected.
The house has very comfortable furnishings. The beds were exceptional and even the sheets looked like no-one had slept in them after the week
There were superb fans supplied which on hot nights were a real blessing as they really ventilated, not like some others I have experienced.
The pool was really warm the first day then became cooler for day two as it had developed a fault, but Jacqueline got the plumber and engineer in right away and after it rapidly came up to temperature it was so gorgeous I rarely got out.
There is all you need in the kitchen including a partially stocked fridge and a welcome pack of croissants. The equipment worked easily and beautifully and were not noisy.
The entire house was clean, spotless even and entirely at our disposal despite us just being the two people.
The shower rooms were good to use as the hot water cam through almost instantly and there was plenty of it and very beautifully tiled. A constant low level extractor meant there was no musty smell and you felt like the first person to use them every day.
Fleury was an unexpectedly beautiful area, very unspoilt quiet and tranquil. There are plenty of restaurants around although you have to look harder on a Sunday as is commonplace in France,, but we had some of the best meals we have ever had in France.
Jacqueline was keen to ensure we had the holiday we desired and put herself out when my husband developed a strange rash ,which turned out to be shingles, because she took us to her favourite pharmacist so she could assist with the language. It was nice to have her around locally and she was easy to contact.
We experienced a huge storm on the first night so having undercover car parking was reassuring as you never can tell when there might be hail.
All in all we came reluctantly back to the UK after a relaxing time which we sorely needed.
I would like to go back to Fleury as it is such a preety, quiet relaxing area.
Great holiday for 2 families
We spent a fortnight here (2 families each with children aged 7, 5 and 1) and had a lovely time. We brought our own bikes and the countryside was perfect for some adult running or cycling, but also easy for the children on the new cycle routes nearby (we took the bikes down to the cycle path as it was flatter there for our 5 year old who was only just off stabilisers). The village itself was very quiet - in fact the local shop and cafe had closed for their own holidays. Pool was perfect for the children and shallow at one end meaning the 5 year olds could stand up with no problem. The house itself was well equipped and very clean and the owners were both helpful and pleasant. Storage for bikes was in the barn and secure.
Description de la maison fidèle à la réalité
Maison très agréable et bien entretenue, Dans une région tranquille et verdoyante
Beaucoup d'activités touristiques à proximité
Propriétaires serviables et sympathiques
Le Marronnier is situated on the edge of the village of Fleury La Montagne in the very south of Burgundy. The village has a small cafe (home-cooked meals are available on request) and a small grocery store.
Within easy reach are the vineyards of Burgundy and Beaujolais, the volcanic region around Le Puy, Lyon - the second city in France plus many pretty villages, historic churches all waiting to be explored locally. Cycling, walking, canoeing are all available for the more active visitor and leisurely trips along the Roanne-Digoin canal for the less active! The nearest towns are Charlieu and Roanne both of which have local markets (Wednesday/Saturday and Tuesday/Friday respectively) and a good range of shops - both food and non-food!
There are many local restaurants offering a variety of menus (and prices!) and many cafes offering a traditional 'Menu du Jour' - always good value!
Other Activities: Ski-ing is available at the ski stations at Chalmazel and Loges les Gardes, both under an hour's drive away.
