Casa Abilheira is a secluded, south facing villa in the mountains with stunning views across the Algarve. It has a 12 metre swimming pool reached by steps through the delightful garden. The property is set in over an acre of land, landscaped round the house with attractive shrubs and flowers.

The majority of the accommodation is on the first floor; living room, kitchen, 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, utility room and sun terrace. The two bedrooms and the living room open on to the large, private sun terrace, with shaded area. In the summer months this is the place to eat out and relax. The living room is open plan with dining area, 2 seating areas, television and wood burning stove. The kitchen is traditional and very well equipped. The ground floor has two bedrooms with French windows to the garden, two bathrooms and a seating area.

The villa is ideal for a relaxing holiday, with plenty of opportunities for walking, exploring the beautiful countryside, visiting both the south and west coasts and the local towns such as Monchique or simply relaxing by the pool.

Maid service is 3 times a week for about 3hours - afternoons. We have an English speaking gardener/handyman who lives close by and can answer any questions.

Why Tessa Buchanan Patel chose Algarve

Our family have owned Casa Abilheira since 1979. We rented it as a holiday home, fell in love with it and found that it was for sale. We have visited it at least 4 times a year since then and it has been enjoyed by 4 generations of our family. We love going there in all the different seasons. We enjoy a relaxing summer holiday making the most of the pool, or visiting in the spring and autumn and taking more energetic walks in the hills, enjoying the empty beaches and exploring the Algarve.

We have many favourite local restaurants, shops, beaches and walks and are happy to answer any questions you might have about the area.

We have become good friends with the Portuguese neighbouring family who have looked after the house and garden for us for over 30 years and are sure that you will enjoy getting to know them too.

A Stay to Remember.

We were a party of 4 adults.

We very much enjoyed our stay at Casa Abilheira,

Everything proceeded smoothly, from the initial contact with Tessa after our booking

to speedy return of our deposit after our holiday end.

Wonderful views, private location, very spacious and very well equipped.

We didn't appreciate how cold the evenings could be,

even though we were prewarned that it can be cold in the mountains at night.

However, just need to ensure one takes warm clothes for the cold, something more than a thin fleece.

The villa is located at the end of a steep sideroad off the main road.

Monchique is close by and the south and west coasts seem about equidistant.

Had a wonderful meal in Restaurante Luar Da Fóia, located on the road back into Monchique from the villa.

Casa Abilheira is ideally situated for you to discover the less commercialised Algarve – new roads mean that it is easy to explore the mountains with their winding roads, herds of goats and simple cafes serving delicious local specialities. You can drive to the lesser known and dramatic West Coast beaches popular with surfers (40 minutes) or the south coast with stunning beaches and the famous golden cliffs (35 minutes). Even in the summer months, it is possible to find relatively quiet beaches on the south coast. Local towns such as Caldas de Monchique (an ancient spa), Silves, and Aljezur are all well worth a visit as are the larger towns of Portimao (good for shopping and eating grilled sardines) and Lagos (for historical associations with Henry the Navigator – and its bustling, colourful streets).

Casa Abilheira is located on the south facing slopes of Foia, the highest point in the Algarve (900 metres). It is directly below the peak (700 metres above sea level) and has stunning views across the Algarve. The villa is surrounded by shrubs and trees – particularly cork oaks, eucalyptus, pine, olive and chestnuts.

Casa Abilheira is 4km from the delightful small town of Monchique, a traditional market town with all the facilities you will need. It boasts narrow cobbled streets, ancient churches, whitewashed houses, beautiful public gardens and play areas for children. There is a pretty town square with cafes and a water feature. There is a daily market, plenty of food and craft shops, many cafes and restaurants and a larger monthly market. There is a new supermarket which is open every day.

There are many excellent restaurants between Monchique and the villa serving local specialities such as chicken piri-piri, presunto (smoked ham) and local cakes.

  • The master bedroom on first floor has a spacious en-suite bathroom. The second bedroom has its own bathroom across the passage. The downstairs bedrooms are en-suite The bathrooms are all tiled in traditional style.

  • Two bedrooms are on the first floor of the villa, both rooms open onto the large sun terrace as does the spacious sitting room. The dining area and kitchen are also on the first floor. Bedrooms 3 and 4 are on the ground floor. They have french windows and secure shutters. The door open onto lovely garden views.

Notes:
The villa is situated in the Monchique hills. We have great views to the coast. In spring and autumn it is a lovely area to walk in. The garden/shrub area extends to over an acre. The area near the house is full of delightful plants. The swimming pool is below the villa accessed by a flight of steps with gates to prevent small children getting to it unattended. The swimming pool is 12m long, 2m deep in the deep end 1.5m in the shallower end. For children there are broad steps to play on. There are sun loungers and a shade area. The house and garden is great for children, but it is in the hills and there are a number of hazards, rocks etc. to watch for. The maid comes 3 times a week for 3 hours a time - We have a part-time gardener/handyman living close by. The little town of Monchique is a delightful place with nice gardens, cobbled streets, cafes, restaurants and grocery shops. There is a fruit and vegetable market on weekday mornings. There are two ATMs in the town
