The Great Smoky Mountains: For those of you unfamiliar with our area, I am listing some very informative websites on Highlands, the mountains, the blue Ridge Parkway, and destinations: **

Please contact me for websites about things to do!

I have to end this paragraph--running out of room--but you can see from the above that there is no lack of activities or destinations available, most of them with no charge at all.

Last Fall was a big one for us...: After coming up to Highlands every year for 17 years and staying in a friend's house, we grew tired of trying to get the dates we wanted. Leaving from our August trip, the wife said to me, 'Wish we had our own place; we could come any time we wanted.' Just a slight pout, but I could tell she was sincere.

Two months later, after three more quick trips to scout and eyeball property, we closed on the Handcrafted Hideaway. We call it that because of the many native and handmade furnishings my wife filled it with, and the original furniture I make as a hobby.

Our three daughters all contribute--#1 knits a lot of our afghans and other accents; #2 crafted and fired our dishes, cups and mugs (she is a professional potter); #3 hand-paints glasses and other accents. Oh, yes-#3 also made the tile for the kitchen and baths that I have to install this spring.

In fact, I will be doing more renovation and upgrading in the months ahead; it is lovely and very comfortable now; I will make it better.

A glimpse into the different seasons: We were fortunate to be able to visit in 3 of the four seasons last year.

August, all five of us were here before we bought the house. If you live in the South, or an area of the North that experience hot weather (we are from Florida), you will absolutely revel in the summertime temperatures--rarely above 70s but chilly or downright cold at nights. Feels marvelous (I hate the heat!)

We were a little late for leaf-peeping season in October, but the colors were still spectacular.

My wife and I came up alone the weekend after Thanksgiving. She loves Florida, and said she hates the cold. Friday morning it was 19 degrees on the deck, but it was the still and quiet cold that does not bother you. She had some wonderful walks in that cold.

Christmas week, we were all there again, #1 and #2 had their gentlemen this time and we had a great time. From hogging the fireplace, to eyeballing the holiday games, to cooking, to laughing--it was a precious time.

Bonus--it snowed on Christmas Day!

Notes:
We are very flexible, as this is not our business. We want our guests to enjoy this house and the area as much as we do. That the rentals will help defray the cost of the property is a bonus to us, and we wish to make certain that those who stay here feel free to suggest improvement or additions. We will probably have it done or added within a few weeks. If there is something you think should be on this list of amenities, please, contact us right away, and chances are good that we can have our caretaker remedy the situation. Thank you for considering us, and we welcome any questions you may have.

Homey House

  • 2 of 5

This house is close to the street (though it is a gravel road) so if you are looking for no car noise (solitude), you will not have it here. There are houses also below you off the back deck. The back deck is the nicest part of the house (though we had to clean outdoor furniture as it was very moldy). The hot tub is nice. The house is fully stocked as far as dishes, cookware, towels, paper products, etc...a plus. We also enjoyed the fireplace. On the negative side, we had no water upon arrival. We know a neighbor who got it on for us (that's why we rented this house). We'd had a 10 hour drive and arrived late at night (no water would have been disastrous)...The Owner was in UK and I only had his VRBO contact which I messaged about the water but never heard back. The only other negative is that the house is dated-there's been no remodeling so bathrooms, kitchens, etc...are original and some things are broken (broken lamp in master, broken globe light above dining table, broken shower head in master bath, etc)...we never went in basement rooms.

VERY DISAPPOINTED!

  • 1 of 5

We were so excited about our trip to Highlands but we were very disappointed in this house! As soon as we walked in there was a musty smell. There were dead insects and worms on the floor. The bedrooms had water bottles and cups that looked like they had been left by the last renters. There was also food in the refrigerator and freezer. When we walked to the basement there were cobwebs with the insect parts still in them! When we tried to use the bathroom we realized the water had been shut off. The owner was very rude when we had to call him to get the water turned on. The hot tub cover had to be cleaned off before we used it because there were limbs all over it. The hot tub was the best thing about this place because it was at least clean. At this time I would not recommend renting this home.

Owner's Response: My apologies. The person who cleans the property and I had seriously crossed wires as to who was coming and when. I assure anyone that their stay will be as was experienced by the other folks who have kindly reviewed the property. It was and is a superb one. The problem has been rectified, and there will be no more such incidents. To the three parties who complained, contact me for a resolution.

Disappointing, to say the least.

  • 1 of 5

Lacking in cleanliness, and basic essentials such as a can opener and soap in bathrooms.. Television remotes did not function correctly. No manual to describe system operations such as Roku password , what to do with trash, etc Outdoor deck, walkways, and Drive were covered with leaves. Had to dig through closets for towels. unsecure wifi, old food left in the refrigerator. Unpleasant owner when contacted by phone.Musty basement sleeping quarters. Would not recommend. Have rented through VRBO on numerous occasions and this was our most disappointing experience.

Poorly equipt and maintained

  • 1 of 5

Worst vacation rental we have ever stayed in!

Dirty :floors, crumbs and food on couches, mini blinds were filthy, no outdoor trash storage, no book explaining operational details of home. Moldy smelling and dark lower floor with dead insects in tub and floor in room with futon. Old food left in refrigerator, and freezer. Deck was covered with leaves, I mean covered! Someone thoughtfully left a leaf blower to use, so I blew the deck and furniture off so we could use it. No functioning can opener.so we had to drive into Highlands, and buy a can opener for 10.00 so we could feed our dog. Coffee pot leaked, I could go on and on. This place is not maintained correctly as a rental . Whoever wrote these other reviews must be related to the owner or else something has changed.

Everything you need for a wonderful stay!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great week in October 2016 at Handcrafter's Hideaway! We knew nothing about Highlands or the area prior to our visit, but now know this is a very comfortable and reasonably priced home in an area that skews upscale. There were only two of us, so we didn't begin to utilize the whole house, but there is a lot of room for a larger group. Everything you might need is at the house-- the only possible suggestion would be a landline as we had zero cell service and needed to call to make reservations a few times. This was eventually remedied by downloading an app that allows calls over wifi, so in the end, not that big a deal. Everything was neat and clean. There are a few nearby neighbors, but house is situated in manner that allows privacy. Hot tub larger than usual at rental properties and very clean. A great home and very comfortable. We had a wonderful stay and appreciated all the little touches that make a house a home. Thank you for having us!

Ideal Family Cabin

  • 5 of 5

The Handcrafters Cabin was a wonderful place to stay for a week. It is a perfectly feathered nest for friends and family to enjoy. With multiple beds on split levels, pillows and blankets galore and 2 full living rooms, there is plenty of space to be together and yet have apart time.

All the amenities were in perfect working order, the kitchen was fully equipped, the jacuzzi was hot, the firewood was chopped and stacked on the front porch, and the lovely friendly old-lady neighborhood dog was installed on the back porch.

This cabin is conveniently located minutes from town, yet high in a quiet mountain nook. Multiple hikes and amazing waterfall vista's are available in close proximity to fill you days with adventure, yet still eat at home.

I would not hesitate to return to this lovely space with more of loved ones.

Map

Car: necessary

Located on the Highlands Plateau in the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina, the area abounds with rivers cascading down heavily forested mountains with an abundance of waterfalls, mountain trails, golf courses and ski destinations. At 4011 feet above sea level, Highlands enjoys wonderful seasonal weather year round.

A lovely escape from the heat and congestion of the flatlands, it is a destination no matter the time of year. Summer visitors can enjoy mild days and chilly nights while others are sweltering in the Dog Days. Winter visitors can enjoy the activities associated with the season. 'Leaf-peeping' season in the fall is a spectacular display of color, whether up close or from atop a 6,000 foot peak along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Spring brings another visual delight, as the mountain laurel and rhododendrons bloom in a riotous profusion of lush color.

Many of the waterfalls are accessible by foot, and all the rivers have rock-hopping and swimming areas.

Other Activities: White water rafting, snow tubing
