Largs Town Centre: The compact town centre, which is only ten minutes walk from the Villa, is attractive and is close to both the sea front and the Cumbrae ferry terminal. Parking can be difficult in the town in high season. The town has a Morrison's supermarket and many shops including WH Smith and Superdrug. There are numerous cafes, bars, restaurants and take- aways.

For the energetic walker and sporty type Largs and surrounding areas offers much including a top class sporting centre. For those who wish to totally relax the promenade walks are gentle, in particular the walk to the Marina, via the Pencil Monument, where you can have a refreshment and dine in very pleasant surroundings.

A regular train service to Glasgow operates seven days a week and it allows for connections to both Glasgow and Prestwick airports. Good reasonably priced taxis are readily available. Frequent bus service to Greenock, Ayr and Glasgow. For full details on methods of travelling to and about Largs and surrounding area, visit the Tourist Information Centre beside railway station.

For historical information visit the Historical Society which is in Manse Court (adjacent to the George Inn in the Main Street). Also St.Columba;s Church.

Golf: Many golfers who wish to play the many excellent courses in Ayrshire -there are 45 of them- (including Turnberry and Royal Troon) use Largs as their base because of the 2 local courses, Routenburn (where a young Sam Torrance learnt his craft) and Kelburn and the fact that most courses are within 15 to 45 minutes drive from Largs. Virtually all courses welcome visitors and are reasonably priced. Expect to pay quite a bit more for Royal Troon and Turnberry and they are likely to ask for handicap certificates. Specific details on courses and their location can be provided on request although the Internet gives considerable detail on each course. The Island of Cumbrae which lies about a mile off the Largs coast has a good 18 holes and provides wonderful vistas of the Clyde and its islands. It is very popular and prior booking is recommended. The Island of Arran has a number of good courses (9 and 18 holes). The Island of Arran is reached by car ferry from Ardrossan (12 miles south of Largs)

Excursion Trips: These are numerous and a visit to the Tourist Information Centre is worthwhile. However have a day out in the county town of Ayr and take in the Robert Burns country. He was born in Alloway just south of Ayr. Burns cottage is now a museum. Close to the cottage is the recently opened Burns Experience Centre. One hour's drive will take you to the Trossachs which on a fine day is a scenic delight. From here you can go onto Stirling and visit its very fine castle. The remarkable Falkirk Wheel in the town of Falkirk should be visited. Rob Roy's country is close by. Take a ferry from Gourock over to the island of Bute (Dunoon or Hunter's Quay) and meander up the A885 through the scenic grandeur wildness of Argylleshire to Tarbet. From there turn south and this will take you beside the Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond. Keep on the A82 and cross the Erskine Bridge and back on to the M8 towards Greenock and eventual return to Largs. These are relaxing drives and the roads are seldom busy. Glasgow is 50 min drive from Largs and Edinburgh 1.5 hours.

About L Martin

My family have owned the house since it was built in the mid 1950's and it has been steadily modernised and altered internally during the ensuing decades to meet changing needs. However it retains its character, is a good family house and very suitable for holidaymakers.

L Martin purchased this villa in 1955

Why L Martin chose Ayrshire & Arran

The house is set apart from other properties and is also situate in a quiet part of the town. There is a good sized back garden which is safe for children and if the weather is good the barbecue is available for use .Table and chairs are set out.

The promenade is about 200 yards away and if you have children there are 2 play parks , one located on the promenade being very good and the other about 100 yards from the house.

Many craft sail on the river and with yachts plying on the river in front of the islands it is a most pleasant sight. Sun sets over the river can be quite glorious.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Had a wonderful time in Largs. So lucky with the weather-out in our "T" shirts during the day. No need for wellies and foul weather gear dragged up by the non-believers from London

All of us (including the little ones) cycled round Cumbrae and saw the seals. Visited Vikingar, walked to Kelburn Country Park and had access to most of its amenities including a paddock ride. Had lovely coffee at the Marina -half the price in London. Spent a great day on the beach near the Pencil. Big finale was an evening walk to Nardini's cafe for a double cone and some stargazing on the beach. The Sassenach and Teutonian mothers could not believe the clean air and water, spectacular views and friendlieness of the locals.

Thank you for allowing us to stay in your house. The kids all shouted a fond farewell when we left for the train. It was a very welcome home for us for those few days. The kitchen had everything we could have needed and more. We could all sit around the dining table for meals and the sitting room was a cosy fit in the evenings. We made use of the board games that were available; the wee ones played endless rounds of Junior Scrabble and the older ones chess.

Everything was much to our satisfaction and your folders really helpful. Perhaps I shouldn't say this but I think you could charge a bit more!

Thanks once again.

What a gem of a property.

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for a week at this lovely home to be close to central Largs for our daughter's wedding at Brisbane House Hotel, which was perfect from start to finish. We found the property to be exactly as described and held all the domestic facilities to enable us to continue our stay as if living at home - even the beds all had memory foam mattresses. The location is in a quiet residential street with the sea at the bottom and within walking distance of central Largs. We made short work of our food and iced treats at 'Nardinis', the world famous gelato establishment in the town, and managed to squeeze in a trip on the Waverley Paddle Steamer to the isle of Bute for the day and a spa day at Bowfield Country House in nearby Howwood. We had no problems whatsoever with booking, access or deposit return. This house is perfect for a large family or group of friends as the facilities give enough space so as not to feel on top of each other. We would definitely recommend it to travellers to the west coast of Scotland.

  • 5 of 5

The house was in an ideal location- one block from the waterfront, and a short walk into town. No need for a car as the trains station is close by. The bedrooms are large and kitchen very nice. I would recommend this home for a large group or a family. The owner responded to any request promptly and was easy to get in touch with. We would love to go back again!!

it was a great location for everyone. We loved it. Only negative is, i wish they would clear out the foodstuff left by previous guests. A lot of it was out of date.

Property clean and well maintained. Yes, I would recommend this property to a

friend. Very handy to Morrisons, beach and Largs town.

Largs, on the North Ayrshire coast, is in a beautiful setting with the islands of Cumbrae and Arran facing the town and majestic hills behind. Largs caters for most peoples' holiday demands and has been attracting families and sporting groups for many years. It is one of Scotland's best loved holiday resorts. Has a vibrant town centre with many cafes, bars and restaurants In addition to its marina it has excellent sporting and leisure facilities, in particular two 18 hole golf courses, two fine 18 hole putting greens, 7 tennis courts, bowling green, swimming pool, bowling alley, cinema and Kelburn Country Centre. Largs is a walkers delight both at sea level and over the surrounding hills. The Waverley, the worlds's last sea going paddle steamer, calls in at Largs pier and plies amongst the islands during the summer months. A regular ferry service to the island of Cumbrae allows for a very pleasant day out - cycling around the fairly flat 10 mile perimeter of the island is very popular as is dawdling in its magic wee town of Millport. The town has railway station which links with Glasgow, Paisley(for Glasgow Airport) and with one change Prestwick Airport and the county town of Ayr. Alternatively most places can be reached by bus - Largs has a very good bus service

Other Activities: Hill Walking, Putting Greens, Bowling Alley and Greens

Golf: Largs has 2 Golf courses.

1. Routenburn which is at the north end of town. 18 holes over an easy hilly terrain which provides wonderful views over the River Clyde. Par 67. Very reasonable green fees for a well maintained course. Tee time booking unnecessary during the week but adviseable at weekends.

2. Largs Golf Club at south end of town adjacent to Kelburn Estate. An attractive parkland course. Easy walking. Par 71. Reasonable green-fees. Adviseable to book tee-time especialy at weekends.

The county of Ayrshire has 47 golf courses which include 2 Open Championship courses and 3 qualifiers. Most are easily reached from Largs due to good road network. The nearby Island of Cumbrae has a most scenic and good 18 hole course. Popular and booking adviseable.
