|Minimum Stay||2 nights|
The property is located within 10 miles to Salzburg, Austria. The house is approximately 800 years old and is filled with antiques and history with each turn you take. The property has full Internet and 2 living rooms with DVDs, full music set-ups, and big screen televisions. The front yard is almost the size of a soccer field. The property is ideal in winter time for Olympic class skiing within 40 minutes drive, bob sledding, tobogganing, and other winter sports are available throughout the region. In summer, there is an Olympic size pool within walking distance and literally 100s of miles of walking and biking trails. The third floor of the house has been fully renovated to include a 2nd kitchen and full bath with jacuzzi tub. The 1st and 2nd floor retain the original charm of the home. Each bedroom is different in size and many come with a private balcony. Both the 1st floor and 2nd floor showers have been re-done. The house has been repainted and new windows installed.
We try hard to make our guests happy. Lots of little things.
Our family of six enjoyed 4 nights here. We've stayed in many Homeway/VRBO properties, but this is probably the most unique and perhaps the best value. The house is both both very old but also well-furnished, and one has the feeling of being transported back in time to another era. Grossmain is a nice base for a Salzburg area vacation--only about 30 minutes by car, and 45 minutes by a bus that stops right in town. Berchtesgaden National Park and Lake Konigsee are just 30 minutes away. Suggestions to visitors: get a Salzburg Card; eat at Kaiser Karl's in Grossman; eat/drink at Augustiner's beer garden; see Heilbrunn Castle and the trick fountains; watch the Sound of Music before going and then be surprised as you walk the City and discover all the places where scenes were filmed ( a cheaper alternative to a guided tour). Stefan and Lisa were very responsive and helpful.
From beginning to end the experience was delightful. Our group of eight spent a week at Haus Sonnenlehen in April 2016.
We have booked several homes for large and small groups in Europe, the USA, and Central America and Haus Sonnenlehen was the best experience yet. Stephan was prompt with responses, and because we booked so far in advance, would even check-in periodically to see if we had any questions as we were planning our trip. Before even arriving in Austria, we knew we were renting from a family who cared about and were proud of their property--it's clearly an estate they wish to preserve, not just collect rental fees from while it's in their care.
Upon arrival, Lassim introduced our group of eight to the house and the grounds and quickly got a fire going--unfortunately, our arrival was timed with cold weather and a late spring snow storm! We enjoyed spending the week exploring the estate, it's even more charming than their extensive website displays. The spacious kitchen and sitting rooms gave us plenty of space to congregate as a group; but there was also room to spread out for some alone time--I think we all found our favorite nook in the house.
We found the location to be a perfect launching point for our daily excursions--Salzburg, Herrenchiemsee, Großgmain, etc.
In addition to all of this, this was one of the best stocked homes we've rented, and by far the best value for the money spent. There were plenty of linens, pots/pans/dinnerware, firewood, cleaning supplies, etc. We wanted for nothing during our stay. For most homes we've rented, the first evening we take quick stock and do a supply run; with Haus Sonnenlehen we were able to spend our first evening settling in and enjoying each other's company!
Overall, this is our favorite home rental yet. We'd recommend Haus Sonnenlehen to any family or group of travelers looking for a unique place to stay!
This was a fascinating house and my 8 member family throughly enjoyed our four day visit here. We were greeted by an attentive Lassim from next door, who gave us a tour and pointed out liquid refreshments and a delicious local cake left by the owner to celebrate two of our birthdays and an anniversary. We loved the history of the house and its many artifacts, including the autographed Richard Strauss photo in the gallery. We had just visited the Strauss house in Garmisch, and were interested to learn that the home owner's uncle was a former owner of the house and was an opera singer for whom Strauss wrote an opera. In addition we learned that the home had an interesting history during the war years. The location was very convenient for our trips to Salzburg, and we enjoyed convening at the outdoor tables. A highlight trip to Salzburg was our Fraulein Maria Sound of Music bike tour, which involved cycling past many sites from the SOM movie and the beautiful Austrian countryside. I would recommend this house to any large group wanting to create wonderful memories of their trip to Austria.
Here are the thoughts of my family and myself on our one week stay at Sonnenlehen:
-We loved the location of the Haus – Grossgmain is a quiet small town with access to some great hiking trails. It was away from the noise of an urban setting but close enough to the highways. The trampoline was a hoot.
-The house itself had its quirks but it was clean and nicely equipped with all the basics. The grounds are well maintained and Lassim was attentive. He noticed when we needed kindling!
-The village was quaint; check our the beautiful church cemetery and the fountain in the square. Hiking trails abound in the area for all levels.
-Easy drive into Salzberg and other attractions in the area including Halstatt and Jenner @ Lake Konigssee. The cable car up the mountain is not to be missed!
-In my own words, " the house itself is very interesting with tons of artifacts and even a hidden room - try to find it! Being so spacious, we were able to spread out and enjoy the surroundings. We spent lots of time on the excellent patio. When the weather was inclement, we turned to the dining area and fireplace. Overall, Haus Sonnenlehen proved to be a very good choice for our family and we enjoyed it very much. Thanks to Lassim for attending to our needs so well and to Stephan for providing this unique house."
-I would add that it was definitely good value for the money and that although quirky and upon first glance may appear a little worn, one discovers that it is actually clean and comfortable and well equipped for a large group.
-Last, but nowhere near least; Stephan the owner was exemplary in all respects! We have rented a great many large properties throughout Europe and Stephan is easily the most attentive, considerate and thoughtful owner/manager we have ever had the pleasure of dealing with.
We're just back from a wonderful family vacation in this house. We had a great time. The rooms are big, full of history and we had lots of space. We had a very good and direct communication with the owner. The special thing in the house: it is filled with history. Great antique furniture. we also loved the huge garden. The kitchens are big and fully equipped. Very cool place!
Dank daarvoor!
House is on a 7500 Square meter property with a brook running the full length. Surrounded by mountains and a castle. 1 km walk to village with excellent food and pastries. Good hiking and bicycling in the area.
