We fell in love with the big sky and quiet starry nights, the pristine river valley with bountiful nature (including frequent sightings of bald eagles), the clean, clear and shallow Allegheny river and paved bike trails, hiking, waterfalls and water sports. Less than two hours from Pittsburgh and it feels as if you're in another part of the world.
Ms. Pat Putman, reservations manager purchased this cottage in 2003
This particular part of the river known as St George has manicured lawns to the river, beautiful trees and a view of the river bend like no other.
You can't beat the paved Allegheny Bike trail that runs along the Allegheny River and other bike trials nearby (The Justice Trail; Oil Creek State trail; Sandy Creek trail). As you ride your bike for miles along the winding river you feel one with nature. The river drops very low in the summer months allowing for safe play in the river. It's cool to see Mother Nature's calender of evolution; the butterfly emerging from their chrysalis , the awakening of the black bears, bull frogs finding their voices in the heat of the night, turtles laying their eggs, fish spawning, bald eagles nesting their offspring; comings and goings of the bird variety and the frisky hummingbirds. It really gives you pause as to what is important in life and how taking time to "smell the roses" is good for the soul (assuming you value that sort of thing).
I did not have enough room at my camp for a July 4 party so we rented this property. The owners were very flexible and responsive to our requests. Grocery store and ice are 20 minutes away as the close by corner store closed some time ago. An awesome raft drift from kennerdell launch upriver back to cabin will take 4 hours when river is low. Freedom falls is also a must see. Also a bike ride through either Rockland or kennerdell tunnel is not to be missed. Bring lamps if you take this ride.
The location and home was even more beautiful in person. Loved that we could bring our fur babies. It did not even look like dogs are ever at the house. Very clean, well kept, no dog smell. View is gorgeous. Loved having the bike trail and river so close. Great weekend getaway. You only need to bring food, clothing, and any recreational items. We even made a trip to the Foxburg Winery ( 30- 40 minute drive).
First I should state that I have been visiting the area for years because my grandfather built a cottage on the other side of the river and downstream from here. The area is great but because it's all privately owned you need to know where to go to see waterfalls and Enjoy some fun hikes in the woods. For a first time visitor who doesn't know where to go the area can seem intimidating due to the fact that every road is marked private and the locals aren't particularly inviting. I don't blame the locals. This is their escape and the appeal goes away if it becomes too crowded.
Some things to note:
The house next door is under construction and apparently they only work from 6 AM to 8 AM. It was almost as if they wanted to ruin the peacefulness of the morning and then they disappeared.
The fire pit is as far away from the river as possible on the edge of the woods. I want to see the river not the back of the house at my evening fire.
The beds in the bedroom won't work for anyone taller than 6'2" tall due to the floorboards. That left two men over that height to take the small beds in the loft. You can't stand in the loft.
There is an air conditioner in one of the rooms that doesn't really work. But we had a hot humid night and left the screen doors open and I still found sleeping in the loft to be comfortable.
The river is a FAR walk. We spent less time near the river than I anticipated due to this. Also the river manages to be both swamp like when you first walk in and then super fast. It made shore fishing from the property impossible. Plan to wade or bring a boat if you want to fish.
I don't plan to stay here again.
Others mentioned issues in their reviews that weren't a concern for us:
The tv worked fine and there was plenty of firewood for us. The bike trail is great and the tunnel is a relatively short ride away. Also we saw a bald eagle every day.
cursor quit on the first line so am repeating that when first arrived had to pick up FIVE huge dog piles of waste so we wouldn't step in it or my little 15 pound dog wouldn't step in it. Also we had no t.v. available as advertised. Otherwise nice visit.
The Riverwatch home was perfect for us. The setting was rustic and allowed us to walk along the river. I am anticipating planning my next trip.
Loved this home! Riverfront property with the trail running right through it! All the amenities you would need. A fully stocked kitchen. Nice campfire ring in the backyard under the stars!
