About this property

Entire house on a remote sheep farm that is safe and clean. Tended for 45 years

Day trips to the just established New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. No virus in these hills and hollows, too remote! Come and enjoy the a vacation worry-free!
Welcome to a quiet farm in the Appalachian Mountains. We have a 100 acre mountain farm with two creeks and miles long views in all directions. The only sounds are Pileated woodpeckers, lambs calling for their mothers and a very rare plane overhead. The sheep love attention and are happy to pretend to pose for photos.

The house is a two story three bedroom timber frame with solar and wood heat that can sleep ten adults or 16 total with children on mattresses on the floor.
The kitchen has a full complement of all necessary cooking resources, a gas stove and oven, (which is working fine contrary to a sour guest's 'warning'), two refrigerators and one freezer, spring water of the highest quality, so there is no need for bottled water.

Pocahontas County, a brilliant gem in these mountains, has many local resources, the Greenbrier River and its Trail, the Cranberry Wilderness Area, for hiking, fishing and cross country skiing, Snowshoe Ski Resort, the best skiing in the East south of New England and the Gauley River for white water rafting in the fall, also the best rafting east of the Mississippi.

Weekend getaway
What a beautiful property and home and interesting and kind owner. Read the conditions closely. This home is very off the grid. No TV and little internet. He is up front about that. It made for great conversations! If you are looking for a unique stay this is a great place!

Peaceful remote farm place for family & friends gathering
Such a lovely place with lot of memory (host’s life) in every bit of the house. It will take you hours just to see everything in the house and trust me it will be like a rustic museum in a good way. We had a another tiny host ( Aiden the cat ) who also welcomed and stayed with us without any trouble. Dan helped us with everything and you ll realise how good he is once you meet him. We loved the sheep and when we went it was a winter wonderland and we were sledding in the slopes and having fun like kids. Just make sure you have a 4WD since the very last lane of the road is very steep and rugged. And you might want to download offline map since there will not be any service. And last but not the least please respect this place because this man has built a legacy of his life and we appreciate he is letting people to enjoy it a bit with these stays. Note: The water from kitchecn tap is amazing 😍 … we were hestitate at first and loved drinking it . I even filled a gallon of it in my bottle for travel back.

Authentic Experience
My family and I have stayed in many vacation homes with some missing the mark while others exceed it. This is a different experience—Dan opens his home, full of character and personality, to allow you a peek into a different way of life, complete with your own support from someone so accommodating and knowledgeable. Come for the escape from the façade of busyness, and take the time here to recognize the different world turning in these hills. Perhaps even leave with a friend in Dan and Sparky. The home had everything we needed. No televisions and limited cell phone access was a nice reprieve and encouraged us to explore the home’s impressive collection of books and take in much of the moments. Beds were comfortable and I feel a silly pride of self-sufficiency in tending to the wood fireplace to the extent that we did. Dan even made us feel “helpful” in our sheep involvement, though I’m fairly certain our participation was purely limited to fascination. Looking forward to future trips!

Wonderful getaway
Our families with toddlers enjoyed a stay at this farm in West Virginia. House has its personality, with a great view on the surrounding hills. The owner is a very hospitable person. Kids were happy to feed the sheep, jump in a hay, walk in the hills. Nearby it is interesting to visit Beartown state park, Lost Worlds caves.

I have a sheep farm in the mountains of eastern West Virginia and still work part time as a contractor. It is beautiful country with wonderful neighbors and it is absolutely quiet. I moved here from Boston in 1973, wanting to be part of an agricultural (local) community, and found it!

I have raised four children, three step children and a son of my own. I homeschooled him and he is now in graduate school and on his way to becoming an astronomer (after six years of graduate work). That experience with him was just about the best thing in my life (he did not always think so!)

Why they chose this property

Local things to see and do:
There are two unique commercial caves in nearby Lewisburg, each different and fascinating.
Watoga State Park, Pearl S. Buck Birthplace and Museum, The Greenbrier River Trail, The Greenbrier River (the only free-flowing river in the East, where you may swim/tube/fish), Beartown State Park (Great outing for families), Highland Scenic Highway (gorgeous drive to view the fall colors), Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park (Civil War), Calvin Price State Forest, The Cranberry Glades/Nature Center (family recommended), The Falls of Hills Creek, Monongahela National Forest, The Greenbrier Resort (Golf/Casino located in White Sulphur Springs, WV), Snowshoe Mountain Resort, Cass Scenic Railroad State Park (old steam powered logging locomotive train rides), The Green Bank Observatory (Radio Telescopes, Astronomy/Science Enthusiasts, the reason for the 13,000 square mile Radio Quiet Zone), Seneca State Forest, Birthplace of Rivers.

The New River Gorge Bridge, Seneca Rocks, Seneca Caverns, Helvetia (Little Switzerland), Dolly Sods, Hawks Nest State Park (Ansted, WV), Lost World Caverns (Lewisburg, WV), Organ Cave, Whitewater Rafting on the Gauley River or New River.

The Greenbrier River is one of the premier fishing and paddling streams in West Virginia. It is home to beaver, trout, bass, otters, bald eagles, blue herons, ospreys. Songbirds are plentiful. The Greenbrier River Trail runs nearly the length of the Greenbrier River.

The farm is 40 minutes away from Cranberry Glades, a unique Canada like ecosystem with plants typically only found in northern climates. They are part of the Cranberry Backcountry which provides multiple hiking and backpacking opportunities.
If you are an outdoor enthusiast, our place is for you!
