I chose this flat in Istanbul based on what I love as a traveling writer - Views! And a feeling of living in Istanbul with easy access to the tourist sites without having to be right in the middle of them. The views from this flat and the roof terrace above will knock your socks off and leave no doubt what city you are in. There is a small balcony off the salon. The view roof terrace (shared with 4 other flats) has teak seating and is perfect for entertaining large groups.
This flat is in an authentic historic neighborhood, just minutes to all the sites. And yet, you'll feel like a "local" here. You can walk just everywhere - across the Galata Bridge to the Egyptian Spice Market or a few blocks to the newest hip area of Istanbul called Karakoy or 5 minutes in the other direction to the pedestrian only Istiklal Avenue. There is a tram for zipping you to the Old City in minutes, and a metro station nearby.
It has 1 enclosed bedroom:
Bedroom #1 is quiet, cozy and enclosed. Did I mention charming? Queen bed.
Bedroom #2 is sunny and bright with beautiful water and Topkapki Views. It is divided from the salon with curtains. Queen bed with antique headboard.
The bathroom is modern with a large rainfall shower, gleaming white tiles and a teak counter top.
The kitchen is open to the living and dining area. Contains everything you need. Turkish tile floor.
The antique dining table is solid wood and seats up to 6.
This apartment is quiet throughout.
Views galore from this bright, light flat in a historic building in historic Galata area. With a small balcony and a shared rooftop terrace just one floor above, it has a view most people who visit Istanbul can only dream about!
We have added many authentic Turkish touches to this flat from rugs, to art on the walls. Wood floors. Large windows with views. Incredibly charming.
A.C. and heating throughout. Wifi, telephone and satellite connection on flat screen tv.
Order food from the cafe downstairs and they will bring it up to you. Delicious and inexpensive.
Neighborhood: Just 1 block from Galata Tower. Kabob stands, Turkish music instrument stores, just up the hill from Galata Bridge which leads you to Sultanahmet with its glorious mosques and palaces and the Grand Bazaar - just minutes by tram, or an exhilarating 15 min. walk across the Galata Bridge over the Golden Horn to the major tourist sites. Some of Istanbul's best restaurants and cafes abound in this area. And the shopping is divine.
A 5 minute walk in the opposite direction and you are at the heart of vibrating Istanbul life - Istiklal Ave: Tunel where the city's best live entertainment and dining are. Best of all , you don't even have to leave the flat - you can see it all from your living room/xtra bedroom, balcony and rooftop terrace.Including the ships passing to and fro across one of Europe's oldest harbors as they ply the Bosphorus Strait and the sparkling minarets and palaces pictured on every postcard of Istanbul.
The flat is located on the 5th floor with no elevator. Worth it for the views and quiet.
The flat is decorated with art, Turkish lamps, antiques, textiles from my travels around the world, eclectic artistic design, has a small balcony off the living room, and whitewashed wood floors throughout. The bathroom has floor to ceiling white tiles, a large modern rainfall shower, and teak countertop. The roof terrace will accommodate large groups in a setting you will not believe. Perfect for entertaining or just sitting quietly with a glass of wine, mesmerized by the stunning view.
Dine outside at our large teak table with a view of Topkapi Palace, the Blue Mosque, & the Bosphorus. The terrace has outdoor dining and cooking facilities, all surrounded by the magic of Istanbul...a feast for the eyes and senses. A great place to entertain. Or simply enjoy the view of Old Constantinople with a glass of wine as you watch the seagulls circle the mosques in the moonlight.
Note: The building itself is typical 'old' Istanbul. A mixture of businesses and residences. There are 5 flights of stairs, AND the view is worth it! Return home in better shape than when you arrived, even after eating all the baklava and Turkish cuisine your heart desires. You will love this flat and this neighborhood.
You will love this view flat with shared roof terrace just above.
Our staff is just a phone call away for any needs you may have during your visit.
As a travel writer and former editor of a travel magazine, I have lived in and traveled to over 2 dozen countries, and I always stay in flats rather than hotels as I love to experience 'living' in a place however briefly I am there. I have chosen some of my favorite places on the planet in which to provide apartments for rental to other global travelers - it's the only way to travel as it takes you out of the tourist mode and puts you squarely into the the 'real' spirit of the Place in which you are traveling. My flats have the following things in common:
1. located just outside, but near the tourist zone so that you can experience the authentic spirit of the city while being close enough to the sites and transportation to get to the 'tourist zone' easily,
2. beautiful views that leave no doubt where you are,
3. At least 2 bedrooms
4. homey and artistic touches throughout
Robin Sparks purchased this apartment in 2007
Istanbul is my favorite city in the world. You can really feel its colorful, vibrant soul while staying in this flat in the middle of an area full of history and the melodious sound of Arabic influenced music and the call to prayer, delicious food, and best of all, the Turks themselves. Turks are the most hospitable people on the planet. If you stay in a hotel in this city, you might not ever learn this fact, which is the biggest reason I rent flats.
I chose this neighborhood of Galata because it is up and coming. It is a delightful mix of the old with the new. Enjoy traditional tea gardens side by side with modern restaurants. This neighborhood once the abode of foreigners, mostly Greek, is gradually being gentrified. Enjoy it now while it still shouts TURKEY! (and is close to all the amenities of modernity.) Large group? Ask about my 2 and 3 BDRM. flats on the same floor. Rent both at discount. Or the studio flat on the floor above.
This flat is white and blue with wood floors and lots of sunlight and a lovely roof terrace on the floor just above. Views of the mosque and palace-rimmed shoreline of Sultanahmet remind you of where you really are - in the most magical city in the world! The bathroom is modern with a big rainfall shower, gleaming white tiles and a teak counter top. The roof terrace above this flat is huge and wonderful for entertaining large groups. Seagulls sweep overhead, you can watch ferries crisscross the Bosphorus and ships from around the world navigate one of its most strategic straits, hear the call to prayer from the mosque-studded skyline. The roof terrace has running water and sink, barbecue, outdoor dining furniture, and best of all, a seagull's view of the Bosphorus and Sultanahmet. Really amazing! A view that would cost hundreds of dollars per night in one of Istanbul's hotels. All yours for the length of your stay! Combine with the other 2 flats on this floor for a 10% discount or add our studio flat upstairs for only $80 more per night.
We absolutely loved our time in Istanbul. Davide was very helpful when we arrived. The apartment was lovely. The roof terrace was breathtaking. My wife loved the art in the flat. I would definitely recommend your flat to others. The folders of prior guests research was nice. I loved the coffee table books as well. One thing I have enjoyed at some flats we have stayed is having a few basics stocked. IE sugar, salt, pepper, dish soap. Great job on the flat!
Our family of four (two teenagers) stayed in July. The apt is on a very steep, narrow, and busy street (mostly lots of foot traffic and scooters) so the driver who picks you up from the airport cannot wait or help with bags in case anyone needs help. The apt is on the 5th floor with no lift so be prepared to get your exercise. It is located in a great area of town (Galata), conveniently close to the bridge / tram. The apt is relatively quiet (you can hear the call to prayer from a single mosque and we heard our neighbors in the early morning but no street noise). The apt is well equipped for everyday needs and has plenty of guide books in various languages. Other apts we have stayed in have a portfolio with essential info (e.g. map, nearest pharmacy, recommendations for restaurants, etc) – we find these very helpful resources and suggest Robin consider them. Our son slept on the day bed (he said it wasn’t very comfortable) and our daughter on the bed in the living area (comfortable). The bed in the bedroom was comfortable but soft. We went to the roof top patio several times – it has a wonderful view, especially at sunset but beware as the chairs are coming apart. The apt was tidy but it appeared as only a quick cleaning was performed after the last guest (trash not emptied, kitchen floor extremely sticky, hair in the shower drain, linens still in the washing machine).
We booked this apt several months prior to our travel and we visited Istanbul shortly after the attempted coup. We were leery and e-mailed Robin several times about the possibility to cancel which was not a viable option for us due to costs primarily related to rebooking flights. She was very responsive and in the long run we decided to go and had a terrific time – plus the tourism industry in Istanbul is struggling and we were thanked several times by shops / restaurants.
We would consider staying at this apt again primarily because it is relatively quiet and in a great neighborhood.
We arrived to a bright apartment and the managers were great about meeting us and helping with our suitcases. The view is amazing and the neighborhood is awesome. We were so glad to be across the water away from all the tourist hotels, yet we were only a short walk to see everything.
The apartment is tucked away inside a great old building. Forget your first impressions, go past the shopfronts and up the stairs to where this wonderful apartment awaits. The apartment had everything we needed and the views from the rooftop were fantastic. It was just big enough for the 5 of us, but in this location, we were out and about for much of the day. Plenty of shops and places to eat nearby. I would definitely recommend a stay here. You need to be happy with a steep street and stairs, but if you're not, you probably won't be exploring this area anyway (bad luck for you).
We had a wonderful time in the terrace flat. We were prepared for the 5 flights of stairs and traveled light. Plus Davide was there to help us so it was not a problem. The entrance itself is through a sort of dodgy ground floor but we felt very safe. Once we got upstairs the flat was charming and the views magnificent. The flat had everything we needed and had lots of lovely local touches. There was plenty of room for our family of four. There was one separate bedroom for the parents and one room with two twins - perfect for our son. There was a curtain to separate another area with a daybed for our daughter. The kids each felt like they had their own space. The bathroom was darling and fine for the 4 of us. We also loved the water pressure and size of the shower. Most of all, the views from our little balcony and the rooftop terrace were our favorite delight of this flat. Next best part is the location. Directly up the street are busting shops and restaurants and the Galata Tower itself. Down the street is access to transport, bridges and important sights in all directions. You are in the middle of it all but without the noise. So much to explore right out your door! And the AC was wonderful on hot days in August! Wifi worked great too. We would definitely stay here again. The staff was terrifically helpful and they even had several great tour guides to read about Turkey for those of us who hadn't done much research! Thanks again Robin for all of your responsive emails before we got there and thank you Davide for being so helpful upon our arrival and throughout our stay. We definitely hope to come back.
The apartment exceeded out expectations. The views from the apartment were stunning, and the views from the common roof deck, where we spend a good deal of time (and met many kind travelers and locals) were even more stunning. We could walk to everything we wanted to explore, or if walking is difficult the safe and easy to use public transportation is just down the street. Galata is home to the cutest shops and restaurants just a few minutes walk from our front door. We walked to the Grand Bazaar and the area housing the Castle, Blue Mosque, etc. in maybe 30 minutes. Davide, the manager, was very helpful and attentive. One day we had an issue with the water (no fault of landlord) and Davide was there in 20 minutes to solve the problem.
One noteworthy aspect of the apartment is that thee are exactly 98 steps from the street level to the front door with no elevator. It's definitely worth the effort, even with our multiple suitcases, but if you are unable to make the climb, this place isn't for you. If you can make the climb sans luggage, make arrangements with Davide to help when you move in and out to carry your bags.
I could not imagine staying anywhere else on my next visit.
Really enjoyed my stay in Istanbul. The flat was great, just like it looks on photos. Managers Elif and Davide were very helpful recommending best places to visit in Istanbul as well as arranging transportation to the airport. If I'll decide to revisit Istanbul - would definitely stay in this flat again
1 block away from this charming flat is the historic Galata Tower surrounded by restaurants and tea gardens. Music Street, filled with Turkish instruments is 2 blocks away, Turkish lamp shops across street, historical monuments within steps, 3 blocks to best dining in Istanbul in Tunel area. 4 blocks to best shopping and entertainment. Walk across historic Galata Bridge to Egyptian Spice Market and Sultanahmet or take a ferry or the tram...just a few tram stops to all the best sites in the city!
