Private Ent., FIRE PIT, Shared Seasonal POOL/yard, Grill, 2 Bdrms,1 Bath/Laundry
What can I say? We are creatives who love the beauty and serenity of this place. We spent our adult lives in Fairfield County CT with a 5-year sabbatical in Seattle, and looked for a location that would not only fulfill our space requirements but meet our emotional needs as well. We share our environment with Rooney McDuff a spirited, way-too-loving golden retriever. We've always loved one-of-a-kind places, and this definitely fits the bill. We no longer live full-time in Vermont but you will occasionally find we welcome you in person.
Pat purchased this Apartment in 2006
Why Pat chose Pownal
Well, this is more than a vacation rental; it's an entire lifestyle. Pownal Valley is probably one of the most beautiful in all of Vermont. Rolling limestone mountains might not make for double black diamond ski runs but they do make for fabulous vistas. Our views are without challenge anywhere throughout New England. Our complex is convenient to Route 7 but our guests ALL say the property feels totally private and peaceful. We moved here full-time in January of 2007. In a portion of our barn complex we operated a commercial photo studio and a craft gallery and later added a homemade ice cream service. Recent events have caused us to move back to Connecticut where we can be helpful to our family and pursue some other interests. In the meantime, you can continue to enjoy our beautiful Vermont property.
What makes this Apartment unique
This is all about peace and relaxation; and not a partying place by any stretch. For our rental guests: Fenced in courtyard for grilling and dining. Fire pit for ghost stories and s'mores. Full-length lap pool for a leisurely swim or a good workout. AND a large flat, safe yard for kids and dogs to play! Oh, did I mention there are about a million things to do around here?
100% refund if cancelled at least 60 days before arrival date. 50% refund if cancelled at least 30 days before arrival date.
We loved it
It was comfortable, conveniently located and welcoming. Sue was terrific - it was so easy to arrive and to check out. Thank you!!!
Comfort of home
This is our second stay and found it as comfortable as the first and we haven’t visited yet in the summertime to use the pool and outside amenities.
It’s location is great providing easy access to Williamstown, Bennington, and northern VT.
Comfortable, clean and well-appointed
We enjoyed our stay here with our two dogs, our daughter and her boyfriend. The location is great - between Bennington, VT and Williamstown, MA. Sue, the manager, was lovely and helpful and makes delicious banana bread! Pat, the owner, answered all my questions. Unfortunately, the people upstairs were quite noisy the first night. However, a text to Sue solved that and the rest of our stay was great!
I am so sorry you had noisy neighbors your first night. That seems particularly amazing since you got in around 10:00 PM. I'd have to wonder what they were doing at that hour as that space above houses a library, bedroom, and bath. They said they had no idea there was anyone downstairs. I don't know if that was the case, but it is completely plausible since most of the main residence is in the original dairy barn, not the 1966 addition where you were located. You did the right thing by contacting Sue, and you would have been welcome to contact me as well.
Excellent customer service !
Excellent customer service. We had a very nice welcoming from the Property Manager, Sue. She and her son provided us with information regarding the town and places we would have never discovered, like the tubs waterfalls! The Property Owner, Pat, was also very helpful and answered ALL our questions.
The apartment was perfect for us (wife, husband and three teenagers boys -almost adults), with one private bedroom, the second room and sofa bed. Very comfortable pool and boys used it even though it was a little chil and water was very cold. Area was perfect for our dog Momo, he was in heaven!! Place was in the perfect location in the middle of both NY and MA border.
The only reason I don't give it a five stars is because I was expecting a single family house and did not know it was a two family. There were people on the second floor while we were there but they were very nice.
It's rare, but I am always surprised when guests think a "guest apartment" is not a part of a larger property. Equally surprising was Manuela and family showing up with an undisclosed dog without submitting veterinarian records nor agreeing to our dog rules or paying the pet fee. We have a responsibility to not only protect other guests and neighbors from unvaccinated canines but to also protect our doggie guests from interactions with coydogs and other undomesticated animals in our region. Regardless, our property manager felt they were decent guests although when the housekeeper showed up to clean the guests thought they had another night! Communication coming and going was not the best.
We arrived after dark and the property manager, Sue was kind enough to meet us and walk us through the property. She baked an amazing banana chocolate chip bread and made sure we were comfortable for the night. The apartment is very well appointed and furnished with linens, cookware, etc. We loved having a washer and dryer, hairdryer, cleaning supplies, etc. all on hand! The beds were comfortable. I do wish there had been a tv in each bedroom (you know, sometimes your little one wants to watch cartoons and you can't stand hearing Paw Patrol anymore). This is not really a place for staying inside, so others may not even notice.
If you are tall or big, keep in mind this is kind of like a basement/garden apartment, so areas of the ceilings are low and the toilet is short and a little cramped between dryer and wall. Anyone 6 foot and under or not pleasantly plump won't even notice.
The location is awesome! Yes, it is very quiet and rural but it is not far from Bennington, VT, NY and Pittsfield, MA. I loved exploring the area and the green grass, trees and wildflowers were amazing! The pool was still pretty chilly and had not had the green bottom/walls scrubbed before we arrived, we passed. It is nice to have available during a warmer time of the summer. They even had pool toys and outside grill available!
We were lucky most of the stay because we did not have upstairs neighbors. The last night two kids happened to be staying above and we could hear running feet and noise. Luckily, it was the last night and we were out early the next day.
You could not find a nicer place to stay in this area. The hosts have great taste and really have a great vacation home. We loved it.
We are so sorry you had to deal with our failing GIF that controlled the pool pump. It was an easy fix once someone let us know the pump was continually shutting down due to this weak circuit breaker. As for running feet and noise from the part of the main residence that overlaps the guest apartment, I will make sure again that our property manager stresses our house rules about such behavior. I wish you had called me, and I could have improved the enjoyment of your stay.
Had a great stay
I recommend this place--it was spotless, nicely decorated, and well provisioned with kitchen implements and appliances as well as a nice washer and dryer. Also the owner Pat was great and very helpful with suggestions of things to do.
I would welcome your group of WIlliams' grads back anytime. Say, in 5 years for the next reunion!
This corner where MA, NY and VT come together is filled with every kind of activity imaginable - museums; cultural events including music, dance and theater performances; agritourism and farmer's markets; festivals and fairs of all kinds; sports including hiking at all ability levels, Alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, golf, snowmobiling, horseback riding, boating, swimming; shopping including being equidistant between TWO outlet malls and a huge antique and craft complex, fabulous restaurants, tours of wine-, cheese-, beer- and ice cream-making facilities, historic attractions, etc., etc., etc. We are partial to hiking and have yet to experience all the trails and taking our dog to all the swimming holes in this part of the state.
