We are pleased to once again offer our ever-popular home-away-from-home, fully-appointed, secluded guest apartment with full kitchen, laundry and private entrance. Queen bedroom, king bed in large alcove off living room, and comfy (no kidding) double pull-out sofa in living room which also accommodates dining area. (NOTE: Maximum 4 adults.) Full kitchen with dishwasher, microwave and all dishes, pots, etc. Entrance is through a heated mud room for skis and boots and all manner of sports gear. Bathroom with double shower, washer and dryer. Large closets, cable TV, VCR, DVD, stereo. Fenced in brick courtyard for outdoor grilling and dining, and pool in season.
Convenient to Williamstown, MA (6 miles) and to Bennington, VT (6 miles); both with scores of recreational, entertainment, culinary, and cultural venues. Many agri-tourism opportunities, farm-to-table dining, world class art galleries and cultural venues, superb hiking and river rafting and boating, top drawer theater festival, and regional theater, an authentic drive-in theater AND a destination diner.
Where else can you stay and choose to go to Saratoga Raceway one day, hear the Boston Symphony (or James Taylor) at Tanglewood the next, go white-water kayaking on the Battenkill after that, then see a Broadway touring company at Proctors one night and a first run production at the WTF the next, hike the AT the next day and maybe even the day after that (we have two access points), and then wrap it all up with a shopping spree at one of TWO premium outlet centers? There is so much to do here, if you spent the entire summer here you couldn't do it all.
Dog permitted under certain circumstances. Please request the Doggie Dos and Don'ts and tell us something about your pet!

What can I say? We are creatives who love the beauty and serenity of this place. We spent our adult lives in Fairfield County CT with a 5-year sabbatical in Seattle, and looked for a location that would not only fulfill our space requirements but meet our emotional needs as well. We share our environment with Rooney McDuff a spirited, way-too-loving golden retriever. We've always loved one-of-a-kind places, and this definitely fits the bill. We no longer live full-time in Vermont but you will occasionally find we welcome you in person.
Pat purchased this apartment in 2006
Well, this is more than a vacation rental; it's an entire lifestyle. Pownal Valley is probably one of the most beautiful in all of Vermont. Rolling limestone mountains might not make for double black diamond ski runs but they do make for fabulous vistas. Our views are without challenge anywhere throughout New England. Our complex is convenient to Route 7 but our guests ALL say the property feels totally private and peaceful.
We moved here full-time in January of 2007. In a portion of our barn complex we operated a commercial photo studio and a craft gallery and later added a homemade ice cream service. Recent events have caused us to move back to Connecticut where we can be helpful to our family and pursue some other interests. In the meantime you can continue to enjoy our beautiful Vermont property.
This is all about peace and relaxation; and not a partying place by any stretch. For our rental guests: Fenced in courtyard for grilling and dining. Fire pit for ghost stories and s'mores. Full-length lap pool for a leisurely swim or a good workout. AND a large flat, safe yard for kids and dogs to play!
Oh, did I mention there are about a million things to do around here?
Please see our guest-submitted reviews on www.vrbo.com. PS, our last visitor left us a bouquet of flowers with a lovely note!
I recommend this place--it was spotless, nicely decorated, and well provisioned with kitchen implements and appliances as well as a nice washer and dryer. Also the owner Pat was great and very helpful with suggestions of things to do.
My boyfriend and I wanted to get away for our anniversary weekend and spend time with a friend who lives in Bennington. this apartment was the perfect place to get some romantic alone time and so convenient to town. And we brought our dogs! We love bringing them along with us but often have a hard time finding "nice" places that accept dogs. This apartment was great for them (they love swimming! And Rooney was so cute with them. Hi Rooney!). The apartment is comfy-cozy and the hot tub -with that view - really made our weekend. Pat and Gabe were available but very low-key. They get it that people are there to relax and do their thing and they've made a lovely place for just that!
After a 4 hour drive with our 7 year old son and dog in the car, we were looking forward to getting to the house and looking around. We arrived early and called to see if we could come by. We were firmly told no by Gabe, so had to keep driving until 4pm.
When we finally arrived at 4pm, the owners told us that the previous renters had trashed the place, and caused huge plumbing issues. The plumber had just left, their regular cleaning person was not available, and they had to do the cleaning, which we were told would not be as good as the cleaning person. We had sympathy for their situation, and knew that it was completely out of their control.
When we initially rented the apartment, it was the only rental unit on the property and nobody else was going to be there. After arriving, we were told that there would be people staying above us and the owners still needed to clean the other unit before their arrival. So much for their quiet hours because we were kept awake until almost midnight by vacuuming above our heads. We also received an email from the owners late that night asking us to keep our very friendly son away from the other renters because it seemed like it was a special event for them and they didn't want them to be disturbed by his chattiness. This really got us worked up since there was not supposed to be anybody else there, and since we were going to be below them, we were clearly the ones who were going to be disturbed.
The next morning, our son went to go to the bathroom and told us there was water on the floor. The entire bathroom was flooded and the bedroom where our son was sleeping quickly became flooded with toilet water (not the nice smelling kind) as well. We immediately called Gabe, and the property manager. The property manager was terrific and came over right away and contacted a plumber. Gabe was apologetic but wanted us to wait around to see what was going to happen before we decided whether or not we were going to stay. Since dealing with other peoples plumbing issues while breathing sewage fumes is not my idea of a good vacation, I frantically tried to find a place that was available and could take our dog.
Gabe said he would reimburse us 100% and we confirmed this with him after leaving. When we got our credit card statement there was no refund so we had to open a dispute. We got our money back and wound up finding a nicer place to stay but the experience with how the owners handled things left a bad taste in my mouth.
We had a very enjoyable stay at your one bedroom(really two) apartment in Pownal. The apartment was as presented and was the perfect spot to enjoy hikes in both Vermont and Massachusetts. Several afternoons were spent in the lovely and protected court yard. Your suggestion for walks on Burrington Road was a great one! Very quiet and great views… Chris Miller was the best. He was very prompt in responding to our questions and was most helpful.
We came to Bennington for the US Snow Shoe Nationals, and came in late Friday night which Pat and Gabe were very accommodating. The place was amazing. Enough space to relax and let our 23 month old run around and play. The hot tub was great after the race on Saturday with a perfect view of the sunset.
Definitely bookmarking this place and will be back to spend another weekend in Vermont!
We were very comfortable in this cozy apartment with all the comforts of home. It was perfect for our small family of three and wonderful that we could bring our dog too. We skied each day and cooked in every night. Enjoyed the hot tub too! Immaculate with fresh towels and sheets - a great place to stay to enjoy the Berkshires and southern Vermont.
This corner where MA, NY and VT come together is filled with every kind of activity imaginable - museums; cultural events including music, dance and theater performances; agritourism and farmer's markets; festivals and fairs of all kinds; sports including hiking at all ability levels, Alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, golf, snowmobiling, horseback riding, boating, swimming; shopping including being equidistant between TWO outlet malls and a huge antique and craft complex, fabulous restaurants, tours of wine-, cheese-, beer- and ice cream-making facilities, historic attractions, etc., etc., etc. We are partial to hiking and have yet to experience all the trails and taking our dog to all the swimming holes in this part of the state.
