About this property

Much loved family-friendly house, coastal setting in the Highlands

This is the only large holiday house for 10 or more guests on the North West Coast of Sutherland and you would go a long way to find such a luxurious, spacious and yet cosy house. Originally a crofters cottage, the house has recently been extended and refurbished throughout to provide a very high standard of accommodation with 7 bedrooms, 5 of which are en-suite and everything you would expect from a high-end holiday house. For example, there is high speed broadband Wi-Fi throughout the house, Digital TV with Apple TV and a DVD player (with a big selection of films) , a large 4 oven gas AGA, a heated dog room, a games room, bread making machines for those who love the smell of freshly baked bread in the morning and even an ice cream maker. The ever changing and much photographed Clashnessie beach is only 200 yards down the drive and the waterfall (after which Clashnessie is named) is just a short walk up the strath, with lochs for fishing beyond (permit required). There are many walks from the house in all directions, with views of Sutherland's iconic mountains: Quinag, Stac Pollaidh, Suilven and Canisp. In addition, sea kayaking, bicycling, horse riding, fly and sea fishing are all available locally. There is excellent Red Deer stalking on the Assynt and neighbouring estates and the Rivers Inver and Kirkaig offer accessible and wild salmon fishing by separate arrangement. Experience Europe's last real wilderness and return to the warmth and comfort of our much loved family holiday home. This is as far from an average holiday let as you can get! Catering is available by separate arrangement with Linda, our housekeeper.

beautiful out of way spot, well-appointed house
This is a great house for a crowd with open, welcoming kitchen/living room with a view in an amazing isolated spot overlooking a beach along the NC500. Sheep in the front and the waterfall a wee walk in the back. Good spot for a family or a big group of friends (lots of twin beds, and nearly all rooms have private bath) with amazing facilities to feed a big group (two dishwashers, two fridges, good pots, pans etc). The AGA kept things toasty, and there were loads of games, books and you can keep connected with fast wifi. Few quibbles: there was no laundry soap, kitchen sponges, beach towels or shampoo - stuff you need, and that many visitors might expect to find in a rental house in this price bracket. The instructions about the house and surrounding area seemed somewhat out of date. Garbage dump days had changed, the oyster guy has been out of business "for years" he said. But overall, lovely!

Beautiful spot. Ocean and beach in front. Waterfall behind. Hills to the side covered with heather and lots of little lakes. We picnicked on top of the hills and spent days exploring. I don't think anyone knew about the hills except us because we never saw anyone there. Runners in the family ran the single lane roads into Lochinver to visit the Pie shop and to Drumbeg just because it was there. There was very little traffic - almost none from about 8:00 pm until 8:00 am. We worry that the North Coast 500 will change that. We had planned to visit tourist spots in the Highlands, but didn't because Clashnessie was too good to leave. The property manager was wonderful. We were able to hire her to cook and bring us delicious meals.

About the host

Our family has had links to Sutherland for over 170 years and we still love this wild, remote and peaceful corner of the Highlands. This house was bought in 1993 and was extended in 2007 to provide enough space for large family get togethers. It continues to be used for 6 to 8 weeks every year by us. I manage the house on behalf of my siblings and we have an excellent housekeeper, Linda, who lives locally and is on hand to help our guests with anything they need. She is also able to provide meals if required.

Why they chose this property

Inchnafearna (transl. 'Field of Alders') is a wonderfully comfortable house and is very well appointed in all respects. Warm and cosy, with comfortable beds all with heated under-blankets. The kitchen is exceptionally well equipped. Many of our guests say that the house is better kitted out than their own homes. There is a one acre well tended and colourful garden, looked after by our gardener, Ian. On summer days it is a joy to sit on the terrace (a sun trap facing South West) and watch the buzzards soaring into the sky and listen to the sound of the waterfall and the burn which runs past the back of the house. Whatever the weather, you can be assured of a return to a warm welcome at Inchnafearna. We look forward to welcoming you to Inchnafearna and know you'll love it as much as we do.

What makes this property unique

This house has everything you could need and want, and is truly a home from home. Extremely well insulated with double glazing throughout, all the beds have TOG16 or more duvets and electric blankets. The AGA and wood burner keep the kitchen and living area toasty warm too. Fuel for the wood burning stove is all included. The kitchen has everything you could possibly need, from bread makers and ice cream machines to toasted sandwich makers and quality knives. 2 dishwashers makes for easy turnaround between meals should the house be full. Up to 3 pets are welcome although not in the house (there is a heated dog room). The garden is substantial and dog proof. The Boat House has a games room, a heated dog room with airer above, a chest freezer, boot storage and a sink for cleaning your outdoor gear. There is a paved terrace on the South West side of the house with teak garden table and garden chairs. A rotating clothes drier can be put into a hole in the terrace. There are swings and a slide in the garden for children to use. Scullery: Belfast sink, larder fridge (in addition to the one in the kitchen), 2x washing machines, 2x tumble dryers, iron and ironing board and a ceiling mounted clothes airer. High quality bedding, linen and large fluffy bath towels are provided as part of the cleaning/Maid service: The house is always clean and ready for your arrival. Beach towels are not provided, please bring your own. Dining area - table seats 14 people in comfort with Portmeirion china and Villeroy & Boch glassware. Living area – There are three large/deep sofas and a long window seat (perfect for a snooze in the afternoon sun), a Clavinova digital piano, 2 TVs - one with Apple TV, the other with free-sat with a VCR and DVD player with a good selection of DVDs and videos for all ages and a stereo music system. Books, toys, jigsaws and adult board games
