About Steven and Sue Matz
We moved to Bryson City in 2002 when we bought a whitewater rafting business on the Nantahala River! Wow, we had no idea what a surprise we were in for! We recently sold the business but would not dream of moving away from Bryson City! The Great Smoky Mountains are just gorgeous. We feel thankful everyday that we get to live in such a beautiful part of the country. We love it so much that we decided to extend the opportunity for others to explore the area and make wonderful vacation memories in our cabin! There is so much to do or it's just a perfect place to relax. We live in the area so we don't stay in our cabin often but when we do it still takes our breath away! We hope you come and enjoy this special place that we call home.

Why Steven and Sue Matz chose Bryson City
We fell in love with this cabin because of its full log build! The cabin is truly a cabin; inside & out. The seclusion it offers with long range mountain views make this home extremely enjoyable and a true feeling of getting away from it all! We just love it and are happy to share it with you!
What makes this Cabin unique
Total peacefulness happens when you arrive at Sophie's Choice! It lives large and gives the perfect mountain feel. We named it Sophie's Choice after our daughter.
100% refund if cancelled at least 60 days before arrival date.
Our August stay
A gem in an area that offers much. The cabin is especially well appointed, most spacious, with a high degree of privacy. Overall condition is pristine, cooking and serving pieces abundant, beds and linens of very good quality, and hot tub in stellar condition. I recommend renting a pontoon boat on Fontana Lake for a most memorable day for your family. Hats off to Sue and Steven!
Thank you so much. We greatly appreciate you taking care of our home. Great recommendation to rent a pontoon!! Fun day for sure.
Very Comfortable and Spacious
Property as described. Very spacious, clean, and nicely furnished. It is an extremely roomy house with a cabin feel because of all the wood. Centrally located for rafting, hiking, boating on Fontana Lake, Unto these Hills, tubing, and dining in Bryson City. We had a great family vacation with lots of activity out as well as relaxing back at the lovely house. Owners were responsive. My husband had no problem navigating the driveway in our minivan - but it is not a drive that I would have wanted to do. A few very steep bits at the end.
Great base for family vacation
My kids loved the pool table, horse shoes, and fire pit. Nice, low key activities after full days of rafting, hiking, & tubing.
Beautiful house with everything
We enjoyed everything the house had to offer. Wonderful beds, games, room to spread out, horseshoes, hot tub and fire ring. Steven was a very helpful and attentive host and the house was so well organized that it made everything so smooth. The guidebook was helpful too and led us to some our favorite experiences in the Smokys. Our family of 9 loved it!
Very clean, private, had everything we needed. Great location. Owners very responsive to any questions/concerns.
We enjoyed having you, Mary. Thank you for taking care of our home.
Beautiful Secluded Cabin in Great Location
The house is really in a great location, secluded but not far from the town and all amenities. Also so much do to within a short driving distance.
The good: Location was convenient, hot tub was clean, pool table was nice to have use of, house was clean, instructions were clear, ease of booking/checking in, kitchen was fully equipped, large washer/dryer, fire pit in back.
The (not so good)-I have to say I was pretty irritated that one roll of toilet paper was provided (per bathroom) for 7 people for a week. Also, one small garbage bag per day was provided and only 1 large black garbage bag to take your garbage to the dump was provided-which we used the first day. This house does not have a garbage disposal, so having to put individual bags of leaking garbage in my car to take to the dump was irritating. The house was fairly clean, except the master bedroom was dusty. We cleaned about an inch of dust off the fan and some of the light fixtures (entryway) had dead bugs in them. We never could use the TV in Master Bedroom due to a PIN # needed to log in. The TV in Living room was limited to a few channels, unless you have your own Netflix account. The owners should include information about what is needed to watch TV in their book of instructions. The "kids" room (room with 2 beds and a pullout) is DIRECTLY above the master bedroom. There is zero sound proofing in this house. The good news is you can have a full conversation with your kids without having to go upstairs or leave your beds!
All in all, we enjoyed our stay and the house is comfortable. Lots of amenities (hot tub, pool table, horse shoes, fire pit, grill) that made it a little extra fun.
My recommendation to the owners is to provide enough garbage bags, toilet paper/paper towels for your guests.
So glad to hear that y'all enjoyed the amenities that Sophie's Choice offers. We appreciate your post-stay feedback as that is what helps us to move forward. We only wish we would have heard from you during your stay so we could have helped to resolve some of the issues. We want to thank you for making us aware of the master bedroom dustiness & the light fixtures. The cabin's light fixtures are part of a cleaning schedule, however, sharing space with nature does not allow for them to always remain bug free. Your comments have been passed along to our cleaning lady and we are confident she will give both items more attention. We are happy to clarify our thoughts on a few other points so that future guests can also understand. Sophie's Choice is a true log cabin and insulating between floors would make it lose its character by hiding the large log cabin beams. The bedroom is furnished with an oversized area rug to help create a sound barrier. As with any mountain home (outside of the city limits) a garbage disposal is not an option nor is garbage pick-up. To ensure guests know what to expect for their stay we send out a packet of information telling them this and stating: "We provide: Dishes, kitchen utensils, cookware, bed linens, pillows, towels, toilet paper, 1 trash bag per day, 1 dishwasher detergent tablet per day. What you’ll need to bring: Consumable supplies (napkins, laundry detergent, toiletries, and if desired extra trash bags, extra dishwasher tablets, extra toilet paper, and extra towels)". To accommodate our shorter stay guests and nicely start off our longer staying guests, the cleaning crew is expected to leave a roll of toilet paper on the holder and another full roll under the sink in each bathroom. We apologize if this was an oversight for your stay. Sophie's Choice has Sling TV as its television provider. After we were made aware that this information was not readily seen by our guests, we labeled each TV and put this information in our Guest Book at the cabin. Upon being made aware of the pin/lockout situation, we called Amazon. We have since learned that an Amazon Fire TV must be logged into an Amazon Prime account for it to function properly. If a guest logs into their Amazon account (on an Amazon Fire TV) and forgets to log off, it locks future guests from being able to use the television. We have resolved this issue by placing ROKU's on each of the Amazon Fire TV's to ensure that this "locking out" does not happen in the future. Again, we thank you for helping us understand our cabin from a guest's point of view. We strive to create a space that our guests feel refreshed, relaxed, and ready to return. Cheers!
