The first bus stop after St Bon is near the excellent ski lift station in Courchevel Le Praz (1300) where you can buy lift passes (either for the Courchevel valley, or for all the Three Valleys), get piste maps, bus timetables, get details of all events and entertainments, and it has ski lockers next to the lifts if you or your children prefer not to carry them around all week!

Opening in winter 2015 the fabulous Centre Aquatique with its indoor surfing, wild rivers, water slides, climbing, beauty and wellness zones is just 10 minutes away. The massive Paradiski area at Champagny-en-Vanoise is less than 20 minutes’ drive, and it’s half an hour to the smaller resort of Pralognan.

About Julian Braidwood

We are both vets that love beautiful countryside, mountainous scenery, and to ski! Our home is near the Lake District in the North of England, where we often go hiking.

We were both born and lived in the South of England until we met at the University of Liverpool when we were veterinary students. After working in veterinary practice after a few years we found ourselves living near the Scottish border in Cumbria. Our three children all went to school locally, but have now all left home and are at different universities in England and Scotland.

My parents were farmers and when they died we decided to sell the farm and look for a nice chalet in the Alps. In 2014 we fell in love with Chalet L'Orbeye and the next year was spent modernising and renovating the interior.

Now we are looking forward to spending more time in our lovely chalet in the French Alps! We hope that you love it as much as we do!!

p.s. if you phone and if I'm at work (at Triveritas) I may need to call you back or you might need to leave a message. I will get back to you!

Julian Braidwood purchased this chalet in 2014

Why Julian Braidwood chose The Three Valleys

Chalet L'Orbeye has a fabulous location in the Courchevel valley for both winter and summer holidays. The skiing in Courchevel and the fully connected Three Valleys is world class and the largest ski area in the world.

The scenery is stunning with snow topped mountains most of the year, and the village of St Bon is the original ski centre in the Courchevel valley with old buildings, a lovely church, and quiet walks. St Bon is still the administrative centre for the Courchevel valley and unlike the other nearby ski resorts has a good year round population.

Other ski resorts such as Paradiski and Pralognon are easily accessible, and the spectacular Vanoise National Park is a must for nature lovers, hiking and for wildlife.

It is also a great base for cycling holidays (road and mountain biking).

What makes this chalet unique

Chalet L'Orbeye was lovingly built by a local family that had lived in St Bon for at least three generations. The woodwork, some kitchen cupboards and original windows were made by the owner who is an artisan carpenter (and ski instructor!) so that chalet has a lovely homely feel, and is surrounded by its own Alpine garden. There are four balconies (one for each bedroom), the views are tremendous, and it is a great base for both winter and summer holidays.

We had looked at many chalets, but the classic style of Chalet L'Orbeye, great location, and the Alpine wooden homely feel meant this was the chalet for us!

In case you're wondering apparently Orbeye is the name of a tree!

The location is perfect for getting to the slopes (just a couple of minutes) and has a free ski bus stop less than 200 m (you can see it in some photos which were taken from the chalet balconies).

Excellent Chalet, very well equipped, great views!

  • 5 of 5

Awesome. Fantastic accommodation, set in the pretty village of St. Bon. In easy reach of Le Praz, but as we had a car we found that the best option was to drive to Courchevel 1650. We were late in the ski season so Le Paz was a little diffificult to return to. At Courchevel you can park directly under the gondola station, which although a little pricey was by far the easiest option. With the car Meribele is also a good option.

The Chalet was cozy with a log burning stove and excellent Wi-Fi . There was also an excellent selection of books and games to entertain us. The kitchen was extremely well-equipped including a stone raclette set which we all enjoyed using .

Car parking was excellent with space for at least two cars. The ski locker in the boot room was within easy reach of the car and the heated boot racks were considerably appreciated .

Bedrooms and bathrooms were well appointed and of good size and there was plenty of hot water.

All in all an excellent base for a fantastic holiday!

Our second stay at this wonderful chalet

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time in this beautiful chalet. The ambiance and facilities suit us so well. The position of the chalet is ideal, the free ski bus up to La Praz and Courchevel is easily accessed and runs late into the evening to allow great apres ski and meals out! The village of St Bon is very pretty and the ski hire shop run by Fred is great, open 8 til 8! The shop next door is really well stocked and offers fondue meals although we didn't use this. We used the Black Pearl pizza restaurant who were great and allowed us to take a gluten free base for one of our party!

We will definitely book the chalet again!

Amazing Stay in Chalet L'Orbeye

  • 5 of 5

Fabulous house in wonderful location. Julian couldn't have been more helpful or accommodating.

Very quick to respond to any query we had.

House itself was very spacious. Cooking facilities were perfect. Located within 2 min walk of the free ski bus up to La Praz (and other towns).

Ski Shop and local supermarket within 5-7 min walk also.

Saint Bon itself is very quiet. All night life is in La Praz and other Courchevel towns. But bus runs until circa 2am, so no problem in finding your way home.

Excellent !

  • 5 of 5

We rented this Chalet for a Ski holiday in family (4 couples). It was a very nice holiday thanks to the chalet, and its location at the same time not far from the slopes, but also in a charmant village. Some members of the family did not want to ski 6 days, so having a nice place was important too.

The chalet

It has 4 very comfy bedrooms with 4 bathrooms. Everything was perfectly clean, including beds and towels. There was bread and other stuff when we arrived. Particularly a lot of non-perishable product already there. It was just perfect.

The location

You MUST visit the high parts of Saint Bon, it is beautiful. The "black pearl" pizzera of Saint Bon is not just an average Italian place, it is a very nice decorated, very local, restaurant with a very good ambiance and good prices.

The bus takes really 5 minutes to go to Courchevel le Praz, the first lift. And the stop is 50 meters maybe from the Chalet. But (like most bus services I guess) in the morning the bus tends to arrive 3 minutes before the timetable (it passed right in front of us once) and in the afternoon up to 15 minutes late. In our opinion, there was not enough bus, and they were quite crowded. A little advice, to come back if you don't want to wait in the cold it may be better to take the bus at Courchevel 1850 where they start from and the stop is nearer the slopes. Using the car was absolutely not faster though and did not lead to less walking with ski shoes. We could only use the Saint Bon slope once to come back to the chalet due to the snow.

Courchevel

Of all station of the three valleys, Courchevel is the nicest and less crowded. Val thorens is quite ugly due to its high altitude leading to no trees and a view full of white, rocks and electric infrastructure (and iced snow), Les menuires is a very big block of concrete in the 60's style like a Parisian suburb social building, and Meribel is so crowded that it's more slalom on moving targets than skiing.

I guess it is less crowded probably due to its reputation of being a very expensive station for rich people. Apart from a few Channel or others shops quite unusual in a ski station, it is a totally normal place where if you look just a little you'll find usual price (for a ski station...). Traps are easy to catch... This chalet and other accommodations below Courchevel 1850 are also in a normal price range. But please maintain the reputation :p We want to discover other domains but we'll certainly come back.

Great Chalet

  • 5 of 5

Great quality chalet, owners really helpful. Clean, well equipped. Everything worked very well for our holiday and we all had a top time. Julian was super helpful prior to our stay and was even kind enough to let us have 1 extra child on an air bed as we had 3 families of 4 and there are 11 beds. We skied out of 1650 as our children had am lessons there.

Bus worked pretty well up to the slopes as we were going up for children's lessons (plenty of bus options in the morning) Bus stop is very close to the chalet. Only minor annoyance is that the bus back to St Bon had been changed to 1 per hour this year (rather than every 30 mins in 2016 - from memory - I could be wrong). Easily solved when coming back with a few apres ski drinks in 1650.

Regardless of having to be a bit organised to get back, staying in St Bon and using the bus will save you a fortune.

Spacious Ski Chalet Combining Social with Style

  • 5 of 5

We've just returned from a fabulous skiing holiday, a key ingredient of which was our wonderful accommodation. Chalet l'Orbeye is finished to a very high standard and we all much appreciated the little touches. The large dining table made eating fun and the u-shaped sofa area was relaxed. The kitchen had everything we needed. This is a very social property as it's roomy and thoughtfully laid out and equipped - as three families we could have been falling over each other in a lesser chalet, but this was not the case in Chalet l'Orbeye. As the property description outlines, the chalet is a short walk from the ski bus stop which made transfers to the slopes easy enough (helped by the lockers at 1650 that we were able to secure!). I would not hesitate to recommend the chalet to others.
