Overview

About the property

Il Vecchio Mulino 17C watermill house with a private pool near Coreglia village

A soothing tranquil and secluded retreat for even the most stressed urban dweller.

Pretty and full of character, this converted watermill is situated in a green valley below the lovely medieval village of Coreglia Antelminelli.

It's only about 2kms walk from the village centre, but feels well off the beaten track. It is reached by a non paved road.

Grassy grounds and tall trees lead down to the brook that once gave life to the mill. There's a private swimming pool bordered in natural stone. The peaceful grounds are perfect for outdoor living with a terrace in the gardens and another by the house.

Inside, the renovation work has ensured that features like the ancient wooden doorway, heavy wooden beams and terracotta floors have been beautifully restored, while the old grinding stones are displayed in the garden.

There's a large fireplace in the comfortable living and dining room - a welcome feature in spring and autumn, and the spacious kitchen is well equipped.

Up on the first floor, accessed by an open spiral stairway, are all 4 bedrooms-two doubles or twins and two singles.

Notes:
The area of Medievale and the Garfagnana is the best area in Tuscany for walking and outdoor activities. We have a strong relationship with an international standard outdoor group www.apians.com and can help arrange mountain biking, canyoning, mountaineering and walking activities. Coreglia is an interesting medieval village which was famous for its export all over the world of plaster figurines. There is an excellent museum in the village dedicated to the history of these local products. The beaches of Viareggio are within easy reach, and the beautiful Roman town of Lucca, the home of Puccinni, is thirty minutes by train or car. The spa town of Bagni di Lucca is nearby, and the cultural town of Barga, with its jazz, opera and art, can be seen from Coreglia.

Wow ! what more can i say, the place was amazing, clean tidy and complete with everything you need

  • 5 of 5

The local area is stunning, the facilities at the mill are of a high standard. The grounds are well maintained. , but watch out for the wasps nest in the bent tree.

The local village was charming and the people very friendly, the only problem was that all the restaurants had closed for the season.

I would love to return as this was the most peaceful holiday that anyone could have.

A special note for anyone interested in wildlife, there are pine martens visiting the garden, lizards and praying mantis on the walls, honey buzzards in the sky. However the most special bird is a colony of Red billed leiothrix a small but very colourful linnet sized bird, this colony is the only one in the world outside its native Asian homeland.

Il Vechio Mulino very dissapointing

  • 2 of 5

This house is very neglected and was not clean. The outside areas/garden are also neglected.

On arrival we had to clean the showers and toilets, wash cutlery, sweep up and clean garden furniture.

The pool was being worked on and the water was green and murky. We were told not to use the pool for 24 hours (this ended up being 48 hours) by the end of our stay (and at least 5 more maintenance visits to the pool) you could just see the bottom but it was still green and did not feel very pleasant to use

Overall Rustic is not the right word to use Neglected is more accurate.

The area is fantastic with lovely village nearby (and in walking distance) with two nice restaurants and a couple of bars. The actual setting of this house is very nice. We would not hesitate to come back to this area but would not return to this house or recommend it in its current state.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. We raised the issue of the cleanliness with the owner who was puzzled by your remarks. Certainly we have not had this kind of complaint before about the old mill, and Linneo is a very experienced owner. Regarding the pool, if there had been some rain the water in the pools can turn cloudy and it can be difficult to clear with the non chemical products that the owner prefers to use, hence the daily visits. It's perfectly healthy to swim in and we would have offered reassurance. If you would like to return to the area please contact us and we will ensure that you will enjoy your holiday

Lovely/Sehr schön

  • 4 of 5

Coreglia is a beautiful hilltop town which was voted a few years ago as one of the nicest villages in Italy. In the 19C Coreglia was famous for its' plaster figurine makers and sellers, skilled local men who travelled all over the world selling hand made plaster figurines. An important museum in the village commemorates these traders. No traffic can access the streets of Coreglia, adding to the peace and quiet and evoking thoughts of bygone days.

There are 3 restaurants and several cafes in the village , and a fine camp site.

The town of Barga can be seen from the village and is a few kilometres away. Other notable towns nearby are Bagni di Lucca, Pietrasanta, and the coastal resort of Viareggio.

The provincial “art” city of Lucca is 25 minutes drive, or by the local train station. Florence is around 75 minutes drive.

Directions from Pisa to Lucca, then north towards Barga.
