Redlands is known for its history, its appreciation for the arts, its architecture, and its "life of the mind." From Nathan D. Gonzales, Archivist and Head of Special Collections, A.K. Smiley Public Library, cityofredlands.org: Redlands – known in 1900 as “The City of Millionaires” and later as “The City of Beautiful Homes” welcomes you! Founded in 1881 and incorporated in 1888, Redlands is a quintessential “big town” with a “small town” feel. For much of its history Redlands was the “Washington Navel Orange Growing Capital of the World” with the citrus industry as the main focus of its economy. Through the years the economy may have changed, but that special feeling of community in a small town hasn’t. This is clear as you take a look around Redlands. Tree-lined State Street is still comprised primarily of beautiful historic buildings and locally-owned shops and boutiques. Some of its most famous buildings, like A.K. Smiley Public Library, a Moorish-style library built in 1898, and the Redlands Bowl, built in 1930 and home of the oldest continuously free outdoor concert series in California, are merely steps from historic downtown. Surrounded by gorgeous mountains, Redlands is located approximately 60 miles northeast of Los Angeles, and 45 miles west of Palm Springs which makes it an easy drive to reach mountains, beaches, and deserts. The city is known for its Victorian and historical architecture, Market Night street faire and farmers’ market, orange groves, Lincoln Memorial Shrine, and the Redlands Bowl. Downtown Redlands is the place to do your shopping! Shops with the latest styles in home decor, craft supplies, up-to-the-minute clothing, skate and snowboarding merchandise, and personal services are just a sampling of what’s available to you.
Just to the west, one can stroll through the Smiley Park neighborhood, filled with turn-of-the-century bungalows as well as landmark homes. With a short drive, one can cruise by some famous homes, like “America’s Favorite Victorian” the Morey House, on Terracina Boulevard, see the stately homes of Olive Avenue, and Highland Avenue, the “Butler Belt” so known because at one time that was the most dense population of homes employing butlers in the City! You can visit Kimberly Crest House and Gardens, a home museum featured on the PBS series “America’s Castles” and don’t miss a walk through Prospect Park, just next door.

About Kathryn Huff
Hi! Are you new to Redlands? Me, too! My husband and I moved here in August, 2019, and we couldn't be happier with this property, neighborhood, and town. Redlands rocks! I teach writing at the University of Redlands and at Point Loma Nazarene University, so I have a soft spot for writers and other artists. My husband and I sing in the Redlands Community Chorus, and we are active in our church. We LOVE practicing hospitality and want to make sure your experience in our guesthouse is one that makes you want to return again and again. We look forward to meeting you!
Kathryn Huff purchased this studio in 2019
Why Kathryn Huff chose South Redlands
These are a few of my favorite things: 1. This property has CHARACTER! She's a grand old dame, and will be 100 years old in 2025. Architectural beauty abounds. 2. Mature trees! Redlands is known for its trees, and our property is a showcase for grand trees. We have stately palm, Chinese elm, orange, pomegranate, and redwood trees, all providing dappled shade, coolness, and privacy. 3. Light and treetop views! The many windows in the Redlands Guesthouse flood it with an airy, treehouse feeling that makes me just want to stare out the windows for hours or curl up with a book OR get outside and enjoy all that sun!
What makes this studio unique
Artist's Retreat! Because I am a writer, I know the importance of having a room of your own at times for creative pursuits. The Redlands Guesthouse is ideal for an artist's retreat where you can work on your project. Special artist's discount upon approval of sample work and description of your project. Romantic Getaway! ALSO, my husband and I are romantics, and if you're there with your special someone, you'll find the Redlands Guesthouse--and Redlands in general--to be a great place to nurture and rekindle your love for each other. We're picking up a hot tub this week, and it should be installed soon, hopefully by the time you arrive! The backyard at night is magical, with tiki torches, strings of lights, fire pit, and a fountain. Walk to a romantic restaurant, or grill steaks on the outdoor bbq. XO! Busman's Holiday! FINALLY, I know that sometimes you just have to work out of town, right? Well, the Redlands Guesthouse provides the privacy and connectivity you'll need to get the job done. Plus, just ask, and I'll be happy to copy, scan, print, or fax for you (small jobs only. For larger jobs, we have printing centers nearby). We're close to ESRI, the University of Redlands, and several area hospitals if you need to do business with any of those places.
