Gozo is the second largest island of the Maltese archipelago that, together with the smaller island of Comino and the main island of Malta, forms the Republic of Malta.
The Maltese islands are located in the centre of the Mediterranean – 93 km south of Italy and 290 km north of North Africa.
Gozo is one of the Mediterranean's most serene, striking and unique islands with plenty of world-famous sites to visit during your holiday. It's little wonder that it is often referred to as an island paradise.
Steeped in myth and brimming with cultural character you'll never be bored. Time may have stood still but Gozo has something for everyone. Its rugged landscape begs exploration, it's rocky inlets make it the perfect spot to snorkel and history lovers will be spoilt for choice. From beaches and churches, to museums and world-heritage sites, you'll be glad you chose to explore this tiny island.
The Island of Gozo has often been referred to as the island of sunshine and history and with good reason. With a history boasting 6,000 years of civilization, every square inch of its land, its temples and monuments bear witness to these past civilizations. For those of you with an appetite for culture, Gozo is strewn with fascinating historical and archaeological sites, some of which date back earlier than the Pyramids!
Museum lovers will find a variety of treasures to discover on Gozo. Each museum houses fabulous artifacts from various fields and eras be it art, archaeology, natural history, wartime, the temples or our celebrated maritime history. And more treasures can be found in one of the 55 churches built on the island of Gozo!
And for those who wish to take it easier on Gozo, simply stroll around our charming towns and villages and enjoy the uniqueness and tranquility that is so very typical of the Island of Gozo.
Gozo is tranquil, and treasures its peace. For some, the silence can be overwhelming, but not to those for whom it spells a blessed a blessed respite from the trials and tribulations of everyday life. Gozo is not for those who like wild clubbing, bur for those who treasure their peace of body and soul and a slow rhythm of life, although a couple of excellent night spots are a hive of activity among the locals during the summer months.
Village bars open early in order to cater for the early risers who attend the first mass of the day and close fairly late at night, catering to the socialising needs of locals and visitors alike. These watering-holes, with their wooden chairs, marble counters, and large metal trays containing this local delicacy, pastizzi, are a cultural icon. They have stayed unchanged for decades, the only sign of time passing by being the food and drink displayed for sale on the solid shelves and in the Edwardian glass cases.
The island is well served by restaurants, where the eating is good and varied. The visitor is spoilt for choice. Apart from restaurants and cafes offering local dishes as well as continental menus, one can also enjoy theme restaurants such as chinese and Indian.
