About Paul Timmermans
My name is Paul and in 2002 my wife and I decided to build this house to create a retreat in the silent nature of Crete. We enjoyed already many years this fantastic hideaway.
Paul Timmermans purchased this Villa in 2002
Why Paul Timmermans chose Rethimno
We built this property in stone on Crete because it is a natural protection against the warm summers. Our villa is located in a very quiet area and close to a traditional village, Erfi. But still, if you like to visit the sandy beaches, it is only a 10 minute drive. The city of Rethymnon is 25 minutes and will give you shopping, restaurants and the beautifull venetian old centre. So a stay in our villa has it all: quiet area and also busy city area where you can find it all.
What makes this Villa unique
Very good privacy, nearest neighbour is over 100 meters away. Quiet, very central located on the island of Crete, so it is easy to visit all places. Close to sandy beaches ánd the rural mountains, so enjoy the sun and also visit the real Crete in the mountains, away from main tourist areas.

Relaxing fortnight, beautiful pool
We spent a very relaxing fortnight at the villa. The setting is great, overlooking olive trees to the sea (although we were pleased to arrive in daylight as it is off the beaten track). The upstairs living space made the most of the view whilst the downstairs bedrooms stayed cool. Facilities were adequate and the couple of things we were missing were provided by the lovely Nicos and his wife, who also plied us with fresh fruit and veg from their garden. The pool in particular was very clean and we enjoyed the privacy. The villa was centrally placed for airports, beaches and sights of interest.
Beautiful villa, pool area,setting-services poor
This is a really beautiful villa, both attractive from the outside and pleasant decor, furnishings etc inside. The pool area is stunning and there are fab views. It could be so good but sadly the services let it down and did spoil our stay.
It is 3 bedroom with air-con in the bedrooms only and on arrival the air-con in one (the upstairs and hottest) bedroom did not work. This made this room unusable so effectively it was 2 bedroom. Fortunately our group size had dropped from 5 adults (at booking) to 4 so it was possible, but still inconvenient,
The water supply to the house was very poor-water would run for a few minutes from one tap and then literally stop to the whole house for an hour. It was impossible for more than one person to shower within an hour or to flush the toilet more than once in an hour.
We arrived on Wednesday and after a lot of effort trying to contact the house manager and owner it was fixed on Saturday (so 3 days of a 7 day holiday with just 2 bedrooms and minimal water)
Once the water and air con were fixed , within 24 hours it became clear that the pool pump was now not working properly -it wasn't coming on and the pool gradually became cloudy and then green! It was usable until the Monday, but after that it appeared very dirty and we decided it would be unsafe to swim, so the last 2 days we didn't have a pool. Again we did try to contact the house manager to report it but had no reply (although they did admit that they were aware of the issue when they came up on check-out day). I suspect that they had to disable the pool pump to get enough power for the air-con or possibly to get the water to the house working??
There was no wifi- it was advertised when I booked but no wifi exists. When we asked about wifi at check in the house manager said 'oh yes-the wifi doesn't work-sorry-the owner is aware' There was no solution to this during our stay although they tried to offer us a dongle to use with a laptop which wouldn't work. Wifi is very important to us and I would not have booked a villa without this service. I note that the villa no longer mentions wifi in the details but if you put wifi into your search criteria it is a villa that is offered.
Lastly the house manager was unhelpful-we were told we could arrive after 5pm but when our hire car broke down and I told her we would be a bit later than our hoped for 5.30 she said she had to go to work so we would have to wait now until after 8.30 (arriving in the dark).
Best privat pool ever....
We have stayed in this house for a week. It is a nice and quiet place and the pool was simply just perfert (perfect temperature, size and no clorine). Our kids loved it. The local caretaker was very helpful and there was no problem in getting to and from the airport (We have rented a car through a travel Agency, which the owner knew and they were very helpful). The house is situated very private but with the most beautiful wiev over the landscape and sea.
Fantastic location and views
We had an excellent stay of 14 days with two persons. The villa is situated in a beautiful olive garden and has really fantastic views over sea and mountains. The pool is excellent and quite large. You need a car, but you are very quickly at the beach, the city of Rethimnon, but also a lot of interesting places in the mountains behind. Housekeeper Susi lives in the small village nearby and attends kindly to all your needs. We can recommend without any doubt.
Alles was keurig schoon.
Villa Fortetsa in August 2010
We've spent two weeks in August 2010 at this fabulous location.
This house is a marvellous place in a remote area with fantastic sea views, a nice garden and a big pool surrounded by olive trees and grazing gouts. The villa provids all facilities one needs to spend relaxing days on the island.
Although remote it is centrally located for most of the main attractions of the island.
The housekeeper Jorgos is doing a very good job and keeps himself in the background. However in case of a need he is there. Jorgos has an excellent knowledge about the island.
To hire a car we recommend Manolis from Prentakis Tour. He is a great guy especially since he provided a car with a full tank in those days when there was a shortage of fuel!
Jorgos will stay available in the near future to advise guest on where to eat, where to go, using his inside knowledge of Crete.
