History:

Gilbert’s Hill farm is the birthplace of downhill skiing in America — it is the site of the country’s first ski rope tow. This special place is both a State Historic Site and on the National Register of Historic Places.

Recently renovated, the Gilbert’s Hill cottage (ski lodge) was built in 1936 as a place for skiers to warm by the fire, eat, drink and socialize between runs on the most popular ski hill in the country. It housed a sandwich bar, ski school and ski rental shop. Dozens of Olympic skiers got their start training at Gilbert’s Hill and the famed Austrian skier and instructor, Sig Buchmayr, directed the ski school. After the ski tow closed in the early 1950s the structure was converted into a home for Clinton Gilbert’s son and his war bride from France. Our recent renovation retained the cottage’s historic layout and as much of the original materials possible (pine paneling, flooring, bathroom tub, kitchen cabinets, etc).

The Gilbert’s Hill cottage is a one-of-kind vacation rental — 100% of the proceeds from your stay support the restoration and maintenance of this National landmark.

Cozy, Cute and Comfy!
We felt so at home! The little house is so lovely with all the historic touches and ski memorabilia. So charming!!! Had a nostalgic soak in the claw foot tub. (I grew up with a similar tub as a child- minus the fancy shower wand!) The location is fantastic and quiet. The weather was not friendly- it rained and rained. but it didn’t stop us from doing any of the things we had planned during our stay. It just means that we are looking forward to coming back and spending more time exploring the property! Maybe next time when the wildflowers are blooming! Lovely hosts kept in touch and made sure we had everything we needed! It was a fantastic birthday weekend! We can’t wait to return!

Unbelievable!
The best part of our vacation was staying at Gilbert’s Hill. The hosts thought of every possible amenity. The property was unique, historical, and beautiful. It had all the charm of the past but all modern convenience. Close to Woodstock and other quaint nearby towns. The hosts were very timely in their communications. We’ll be back.

Always wonderful
This is our second year staying at Gilbert Hill. It’s a magical place. My kids love running through all of the open spaces and looking for frogs. The native flowers are beautiful. The house was clean and cozy.
