Overview

About the property

House, 1 Bedroom + Loft, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-3)

Part of a lovely organic farm along the Chama River in Medanales, neighboring Abiquiu. The casita sleeps two comfortably in the bedroom with queen size bed and can accomodate an additional child or adult in the loft. The cozy casita has a small living/kitchen area, a full bathroom with Mexican tile, and a separate bedroom. The loft is accessed through the bedroom. There is a covered portal with a wood stove and comfortable furniture on the front of the casita overlooking the vineyard and fields.

The casita is screened from the main house and is oriented toward the gardens, fields and vineyard. The flagstone patio borders the acequia, the traditional irrigation canal for the farm, and looks out over farmland and down to the cottonwood trees bordering the river. A small bridge leads across the acequia into the vineyard and old orchard. Guests are invited to enjoy seasonal produce.

You can also walk the 1/2 mile down the lane along the farm fields and through the meadow land to banks of the Chama River and enjoy the peacefulness of the river from the shaded campsite at the riverbank with picnic table and chairs and firepit.

Nearby the farm, hiking and riding trails lead to BLM and National Forest lands offering a variety of landscapes to enjoy -- vast open mesas, arroyos to explore, pine forests, mountain vistas. Also nearby are the ruins of little-known old Indian settlements. Ojo Caliente with its fabled hot springs and spa facilities is a short drive from the farm.

Medanales is a small village with a Hispanic population and tradition just south of Abiquiu of Georgia O’Keeffe fame. The landscape varies from pastures to badlands, with the magic Cerro Pedernal and Sierra Negra on the horizon. Both can be climbed by the more experienced hiker.

Ghost Ranch and the wide and splendidly colored Piedra Lumbre basin are nearby, as is Plaza Blanca with its white sandstone formations. Espanola, the main town in this predominantly Hispanic area, is 15 minutes away. Quite a few interesting restaurants that serve local cuisine (with red or green chili!) can be found here.

Comfy casita convenienly near Abiquiú & Ghost Ranch

  • 4 of 5

Charming & comfortable place with everything we needed (including wine, crackers & cheese). Our hosts even set up a tent so we could relax near the Chamas River. Enjoyed the hummingbirds, rainbow and coyote chorus at night (they threw those in for free!)

gorgeous quiet setting, comfortable bright clean casita, nice people. Highly recommended

  • 5 of 5

Terrific casita out in the country with lots of windows and pretty orchard views make this a very pleasant place to relax or serve as a base for the many many interesting day trips in this area. Surrounding country is so beautiful and full of things to see. The owners are very nice and helpful. Everything is as described, and the casita is even neater than the pictures. You will love sitting in the front room or porch and just enjoying the pretty views. And the hot tub, with a great view, is a real plus. Excellent wi-fi. Very good bed. Although the kitchen has only a mini fridge, the owners give you access to a spare full sized fridge in a nearby shed; that made it easy to bring what you need for a week, including your wine supply! Good kitchen--we ate in a lot. But went out also. Do not miss the tomale cakes appetizer at the Abiquiu Inn--have one or two for a main course.. And El Farolito is the absolute best "Mexican-type food" anywhere--excellent Northern New Mexico fare and a huge step up from TexMex, served in a tiny building in a tiny town. Very highly recommended--we will be back.

We loved River Farm Casita!

  • 5 of 5

We loved River Farm Casita! We were looking for a quiet place to rest and relax for a few days and this was the perfect spot. The casita was clean, comfortable and nicely decorated. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook a few meals. We mostly loved the screened porch and spent a lot of time there.enjoying the view, the light, the humming birds and the sound of the stream flowing by. Lisa and Djann we wonderful and made us feel very welcome. We hope to return next summer.

Fun at the River Farm Guest Casita

  • 5 of 5

Lisa, Djann and their dogs are wonderful hosts. The casita is comfortable and a home away from home. The farm on the river Chama is relaxing and beautiful you can enjoy a morning, afternoon or evening walk through the fields and down to the river. The farm is close to many things and far enough away from them also.

This is a stay I shall never forget and hope to get back.
