A bit of history about The Mayhew Inn:

In 1873, Henry and Thomas Mayhew had a store in Grand Marais that served as a trading post, which was located on a point formed by the east and west bays. This is the approximate location of the current Coast Guard Station. Their brother Joseph Mayhew was also the first lighthouse keeper in 1886. They had a house on the point and then built the first lodging establishment in Grand Marais called The Mayhew Hotel. The building that served as the Mayhew’s house now sits as the Cook County Historical Society & Museum. Many of the archival images that you now see were taken from the approximate vantage point of the new Mayhew Inn.

Come experience all that The Mayhew Inn has to offer!

About Amy Hinger

Hi there! Our names are Amy, Joel and our son Max. We have two pups named Myron & Fletcher. We spend time on our classic 1967 Chris Craft Wooden Cruiser on the St. Croix River when we're not spending time in Grand Marais and traveling to other places.

Amy Hinger purchased this house in 2015

Why Amy Hinger chose Grand Marais

Joel spent his summers in Grand Marais as a child. After a long lapse in visiting the north shore, we started making it a yearly Memorial Day tradition, and for Max's birthday. After staying at the Artist Loft we fell in love with it immediately. There really is no other place like it in all of Grand Marais.

What makes this house unique

It's your own loft apartment, right in the heart of downtown Grand Marais. The Gunflint Tavern is your next door neighbor, and all of the other restaurants are a stones throw away. But seclude yourself if the eclectic backyard with your own fire, and a bottle of wine:)

Guestbook comments from the owner

“Ok, folks... This place is exactly how your flat would be if you were as hip as you wanted to be. It is perfect--funky and comfortable with a stack of albums that will make you want to stay in and spin them all night. We visited Grand Marais and stayed in this little slice of perfection on an unseasonably warm November weekend. It was amazing to wake up with the sun streaming in the window and see the lake just across the street. And the bed was super comfortable. The flat is perfect situated in this amazingly charming town; right on the main drag between a tavern with good food and a Ben Franklin that is way cooler than anyone expects a Ben Franklin to be. And the very best part of the whole deal was that we could bring our canine companion with us. It is a rare and wonderful thing, as most dog owners know. Joel was a great host. Communicated exactly what we needed in a timely manner. He happened to be in town the same weekend and we had a brief meeting and he seemed to be a lovely person. I would recommend staying at the artist loft without hesitation. It was a truly wonder weekend and we are looking forward to going back.”

Grand Marais Gem

  • 5 of 5

Grand Marais, alone, is the perfect get away. The Mayhew Inn puts you right in the center of it, with an amazing view of the lake. It's a destination we will keep coming back to for years to come.

Quirky, Cozy, Interesting, Inviting, Comfortable, Fab Views

  • 5 of 5

They got all the Important Stuff right! Let's start with the location. Let's add the world of Grand Marais out the front door......or just sit inside and VIEW the world of Grand Marais and the marina, people, boats, Lake Superior. Or if you want to cozy up around the fire pit you can head out the back to the quirky patio. There aren't many spots like this being offered in the generic world of safe, white walls and "cookie-cutter" decorating. If you like minimalist, you might want to look elsewhere. Our mother, daughter, granddaughter trio (plus French Bulldog, Omelette) LOVED it!

Location, location, location. . . with loads of character!

  • 5 of 5

The Artist's Loft was as immaculate as it was comfortable. The location is the best - we were able to walk to plenty of restaurants , walking paths and shops - but the Loft was well set up for staying home and cooking in too. Smore making on the fire pit out back was a hit with the family. It was a great weekend escape from the Twin Cities and a perfect introduction to "up North" for Atlanta transplants like us.
