About David and Paula Blanchard

Since moving to this beautiful spot 28 years ago wehave spent all the years since developing its gardens and landscape for beauty and enjoyment. We live right next door to the house/cottage (but conveniently out of sight), and this is our only vacation rental. We think of all visitors as our special guests.

David and Paula Blanchard purchased this house in 1990

Why David and Paula Blanchard chose Camden

Our place, while in town, is peaceful and quiet. It is uniquely bordered by a (seldom used) community meeting hall, our lawn and gardens, and a large woodland. Because it is set well back from the street at the end of its own driveway, the cottage affords visitors the chance to enjoy more than an acre of quiet gardens and solitude while still being close to everything. The cottage is nestled in a naturalistic landscape of woods, lawn, trees, shrubs, and abundant flowers.

What makes this house unique

Perfect for two couples to share.

Also, a great place for elders or physically impaired, for recuperation, recovery, just plain rest, or convenient mobility. One-floor living, two full bathrooms, extra wide doorways, strategically placed grab rails, entrance ramp, close-in parking all make this uniquely suited for people with special needs.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our first trip to Maine could not have been better. Beautiful weather and accommodations.!

Fresh cut flowers were a nice touch.

Your community band home are a treasure. Until we meet again--

Clean, cozy cottage, beautiful location walk to town,

  • 5 of 5

I thank David and Paula for sharing their beautiful cottage. They were the perfect hosts - on site if we needed them, they said we could just go next door and knock on their door, yet very much let us have our space and privacy. We never saw them unless we needed them. They are very sweet, kind, people, and very fun to talk to about the area and things to do. We very much enjoyed them and their beautiful cottage, and their yard and gardens are beautiful! They provided everything I could think of in the cottage, all pots, pans, dishes, utencils, towels, sheets, coffee, etc, and they were so helpful and offered many suggestions of things to do in the area. The cottage was meticulously clean and tidy, the beds were comfy, and the yard is so beautiful! And the cottage is in the perfect location! It's a quiet little getaway tucked back in a beautiful yard with privacy all around, in a lovely neighborhood, yet just a short beautiful walk to town. We walked to town and the harbor almost every morning for coffee and every evening for ice cream at the River Ducks ice cream shop (it's delicious and they have gluten free ice cream cones!).

We stayed for 1 week and enjoyed 3 local hikes (the climb up Mount Battie was a favorite, but all were lovely), local lighthouses, the park on the Harbor and one with a little swimming cove, the harbor, local shops and restaurants, the Owl Head Lobster Co was where we bought lobster straight from the dock near Owl Head lighthouse, and a sunset sail on Penobscot Bay with the ship 'Surprise' right in town on the harbor. We also did a day trip to Acadia which was beautiful!

It was a great little house in a great location that made for a fantastic vacation for our family of 4. We will return another summer and highly recommend to anyone.

This has been the third time for us at Garden Cottage and it still feels light home in a very peaceful setting. The Blanchards are very wonderful host with a willingness to help in any way that might be needed. We highly recommend this property in the center of the Maine coast.

A Great Place for Working Remotely

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at the Cottage for a week in August 2017 and we each needed to work during our stay. We required excellent and consistent internet connectivity and this cottage provided it. The Cottage is equipped with broadband WiFi as well as ethernet ports for direct connection of computer and/or VoiP phone. My husband’s work requires him to be on the phone quite a bit so he used the single room “office” which has a desk and a wonderful view of the garden. I used the dining room table which has great light and also garden views. The acoustics are such that we didn’t hear each other unless we wanted to! There were no issues whatsoever which made for a very successful work week/vacation.

Charming Camden Cottage

  • 4 of 5

We were delighted with our stay in the charming cottage and with our wonderful hosts, David and Paula. The cottage was fully equipped, very clean and extremely comfortable. The view from the deck of the lovely gardens, while sipping your morning coffee was heavenly! The location is excellent for day trips to neighboring towns and harbors. I highly recommend this vacation rental. And, I would definitely go back again and again!

Cottage in the garden

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time staying at Paula and David's cottage. One of the pluses for us is two full bathrooms and a washer and dryer. The kitchen has everything you need and she provides things like dish detergent, coffee, etc, to get you started.

Our grandsons will remember the ride David gave them around the property in the trailer behind his tractor.

David and Paula had helpful ideas and provided full written directions for everything. We just hope we can come back next summer.

Owner's Response: Wonderful to have you all and loved sharing our place with the kids! Guess what! We have a 4-1/2 year old and a 1-1/2 year old staying with us right now, and Dad is really enjoying tossing the ball around with his son in the backyard while Mom is inside with their daughter. Also . . . first time in a hammock for the young lad! Love making memories.

Wonderful Place to Spend a Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We would echo all the other GREAT reviews of the garden cottage. It was everything that all the previous renters said. The location is perfect - very quiet, away from the summer bustle which is in town, yet close enough for a lovely walk down to the harbor.. The house itself is roomy with lots of storage, immaculate, well supplied, and surrounded by beautiful gardens filled with a variety of colorful flowers. Sitting on the deck looking over the property is peaceful and so lovely. David and Paula are perfect hosts and take so much pride in their property. They welcomed us with freash flowers in the kitchen and told us we were welcome to stroll the property whenever we wanted. David even cut a fresh gladiola stem for the jug on the deck for us to enjoy! The area around Camden is spectacular. Don't miss going out to Owl's Head, hiking in the Land Trust areas (especially Beech Hill), walking the causeway to the Rockland lighthouse, going to the top of Mt. Battie even in the rain, and enjoying the many restaurants and stores in town. We also loved the nature cruise from Port Clyde, seeing the puffins and watched as the crew pulled in some lobster traps. The cottage bookshelves are full of books and magazines about Maine, and the buffet drawer is overloaded with brochures and information about the area. The choices are endless! Our time went too quickly and we were so happy we picked this lovely place to stay. You will be, too.

Owner's Response: Nice! We have lived on this property 27 years, and enjoy it more every year. I wish we could also "take credit" for how wonderful the Camden area is for everyone . . . year 'round residents and vacationers alike, but we can't. It just is! So glad you enjoyed the fruits of all our labors at the garden cottage and also enjoyed this area so much.
