Photos and Description of this Lexington holiday cottage

House, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 2-4)

This 200 year old house has been restored and awaits your visit to Historic Lexington Virginia. Whether you are visiting the colleges, vacationing, visiting the Virginia Horse Center or 'whatever' it will be your favorite headquarters for a visit to our area. It is conveniently located on Main Street near the colleges and the Historic District and only 2 miles from the Horse Center. The new park at Jordans Point is down the hill 2 blocks! The Chessie Trail and Woods Creek Trail begin at the park. Access to the Maury River is here as well. The VMI sports facilities are but a short walk up Main Street.

My house is quiet inside its two foot thick walls. I have furnished it with interesting things and it is a special place. Linens are furnished as well as my ecclectic collection of kitchen ware. Come to Lexington and stay a spell at the Historic 1780 Stone House! Thanks, Tom Bradshaw

About The Owner

I have lived here for 35 years and love Lexington. I met Faye while I was a cadet at VMI and we have operated businesses here since I graduated from photography school. We have 3 vacation rental properties and are involved with managing 10 rental properties. I have enjoyed restoring old buildings and especially this 200 year old property. Our focus most recently has been to work on the landscape. Little by little it is improving.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 1996

Why The Owner chose Shenandoah Valley

I chose this property while looking for investment property next door. I told the realtor that I sure would like to own the Stone House next door. Several days later he called and said I just Listed it! My answer-'you just sold it'! We had previously built a log cabin as a vacation rental at Natural Bridge and enjoyed the vacation rental business and thought that an in town property might work.

What makes this cottage unique

One of the unique benefits of renting a house instead of a room is space to spread out. Also, uniqueness of the property--not a 'cookie cutter same as everywhere else' accomodation. we had stayed in a house in Williamsburg in the restored area and felt a part of the community even for only a few nights so we thought others might enjoy having a place of their own while visiting might have some appeal. Also, seemed important. the opportunity to bring pets

Great Vacation home!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I and our 2 cats very much enjoyed staying at the stone house for a week. The house was perfect and the town of Lexington is great. The people are so friendly and willing to help and everything was just perfect, including the weather!

The fact that our 2 "children" were allowed to be with us made it even more special not having to worry about them being at home alone.

I would most definitely stay at the stone house again!

Thank you!

We thoroughly enjoyed our comfortable stay at the Stone House this past weekend. We were in Lexington for the New Market Oath Cadet ceremony. Our two cadets appreciated the opportunity to relax, watch football, and eat a home-cooked meal.

Thank you!

Charming, restful comfort.

My husband, dog, and I had a very restful three days at the stone cottage. It provided a restful return after viewing the sites of Lexington. It isn't hard to fall in love with Lexington. We definitely fell in love with the stone cottage.

Beautiful historic home

  • 4 of 5

The home is comfortable. We enjoyed sitting next to the fireplace in the evening talking and playing cards. There is a deck in the back and a patio with a grill where one can relax, read and breathe in the smell of flowers. Downtown Is a few blocks away and the Virginia Military Institute campus can be reached by walking out the back door and up a hill. We really enjoyed our visit.

Mixed bag -- lots to love but drawbacks too

  • 3 of 5

Stone house was a mixed bag for a 2 night get away of 2 adults & a preschooler.

-- in setting up reservation, Tom replied very quickly and booking info was thorough. Since we were booking at last minute, his speedy response was helpful.

-- the interior is just as cute as pictured. LOVED the old beams, wide floorboards, and quilts. enjoyed the gas fireplace during the chilly nights.

-- the gardens, tho small, are even more interesting than the pictures, with many levels and your own private cliff. Fence was great (& essential) for preschooler to enjoy yard.

-- parking, tho not dedicated or adjacent to house, was always available even on a busy weekend.

-- Lexington is full of galleries, shops, and restaurants. There was more to explore than we had time to see in one afternoon.

-- easy access to supplies. we picked up dinner and snacks at the organic market a short drive away.

-- sofa bed was remarkably comfortable, for a sofa bed.

-- two full bathrooms were great for friends traveling together.

-- kitchen was pretty well equipped with both tools and consumables. We appreciated coffee & filters, a few spices, & plenty of dish soap.

-- stone House is physically ADJACENT to the busy road between the highway and VMI - one step from the road to the head of the beds. Tho the walls are incredibly thick, there was a continuous stream of traffic noise on a busy college weekend.

-- the location on the VRBO map is incorrect. It looks like it is right downtown. It is not. It is on the edge of town. It IS adjacent to VMI and a block from a park, but don't expect to walk out the door and find those galleries and restaurants at the doorstep. Great location to attend a VMI sport event. Not so great for other destinations in town.

-- the old house features are charming but Stone House also comes with some old house issues. No dishwasher surprised me. The slow draining kitchen sink made hand wash even more tedious. Neither Shower were luxury experiences with water temperature and pressure issues. Tho there was plenty of hand soap, when my travel "shampoo" turned out to be hand creme, there was no shampoo provided as a fall back. (There was shampoo in 1 of the bathrooms.)

-- due to steep and slick stairs, I would not recommend for Toddlers, tho 3 yr old did fine.

Overall, we had a pleasant stay and we were sad to leave. I would consider staying again, but before I booked, I would consider other options in the area as well.

Owner's Response: Thank you for letting me know about the drain problem. I have asked my plumber to check drains and water heater. The sleep sofa is the best I could find with memory foam mattress.
