Best kind of home away from home!!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our time on the Sojourner. Anytime we can spend on a boat is time well spent. The boat was nicely appointed and in a perfect location. We had a great time just relaxing in the marina when we weren't out site-seeing. High recommend!! There was a great local pub nearby and many things in walking distance. Couldn't beat the price and the staff was so friendly and accommodating. Would return again in a heartbeat.

Try something different than your typical stay

  • 5 of 5

What make this place much more enjoyable is the weather. The weather cooperated for us with 4 people. We can sit outside and/or top of the boat and watch the sunset, the harbor, the training sails class pulling out and coming in. Else, if it was raining, we would be cramped inside with the 4 of us.

Regarding the berthing compartments, it has 2 bedrooms. Remember, it is a boat and not an apartment (it's like camping). We knew going in, that it would be a bit tight and would assume the A/C would be a bit loud. in such a tight space. Knowing that, we wanted the experience of staying on a boat. We dealt with it and enjoyed the company and harbor scene more. Also, at the end of the pier, we can use the bathroom/shower on land instead of showering on the boat.

Location: We enjoyed walking, so walking to the other end of the bay (about 15 mins) and taking a water taxi (about 3 dollars/person) to Annapolis side is convenient. And also, instead of taking the water taxi, we can also walked across the bridge to Annapolis side and it doesn't take very long either.

If you like crabs, there is like a 2 min. walk to Wild Country Seafood. We found out and compare the prices for half a dozen crabs is much less expensive than on the mainland Annapolis side. There is also a local bar/grill that is a a block away, and other decent restaurants within walking distance, The Chart House, The BoatYard, etc. We felt very safe for us to walk at night to/from the restaurants.

My 3 friends and I, discussed if were were to come back, would we stay here again. All of us, said, "yes".

Great alternative to a hotel room

  • 4 of 5

We dropped off our son at the Naval Academy and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Sitting on the deck with a drink looking out over the harbor after a busy day was much more enjoyable than sitting in a small hotel room staring at a TV.

Unique Experience but Low on Comfort

  • 2 of 5

We booked the Sojourner to experience staying aboard a trawler and to have a home base for visiting Annapolis. We have stayed on other boats, but never a trawler. We wanted to see how the 36' Albin Express Cruiser would be.

The Good:

The staff of the CBC are friendly and professional. We were given suggestions of dining and food shopping, as well as the WiFi password.

The Sojourner is the perfect place to observe the busy CBC. We saw an impressive array of boat handling as members and staff brought boats in and out of slips.

The marina location in the town of Eastport is awesome. Except for running out to buy a few food items and bags of ice, we let the car sit. Nearby Davis's Pub is great. We caught a water taxi at the maritime museum dock to downtown Annapolis. Fare: $5 per person with a min of $15 (+ tip). We learned walking a few more blocks to the Chart House restaurant docks, the taxi fare is only $3 per person, no min., we took that route from then on.

Coffee on the deck with just us and the birds around was our favorite part. Especially the first morning when the air was cool and comfortable.

One day, we walked into Annapolis and back (a little over a mile each way). So many pretty houses and gardens to see, we had a nice sushi lunch at Joss Cafe.

Not So Good:

The trawler interior is a tight space and the air quality is terrible. We were there during hot weather. The first evening cooled down enough to open the windows and let the air flow through. Huge difference. Sitting outside during the day in the shade was nice, but the upper Bimini canvas was missing for repair, so we were confined to the lower deck. When we had to close the windows and turn the air on, a putrid smell was blown out the vents. A/C was noisy and didn't really keep up with the 90+ degrees outside. We had two nights of very uncomfortable sleep. Two flat sheets were provided for the v-berth but no mattress pad. The pillows were old with no protectors under the cases. The Sojourner is an older boat with definite wear and tear (on the couch)and some grimy nooks and crannies. I had to wash the dishes before using them. There were a few wrinkly coffee filters in the cupboard but not the right type. We weren't given a key and walking back late at night we realized that we were alone in the marina returning to an unsecured boat.

Future renters should know that this is a rustic experience, like camping. Awesome location. Missing the mark on welcoming comfortable amenities.

Owner's Response: We are very sorry that your stay had so many negatives. Our dock staff is on hand daily from 9-5, and there is an emergency 24 hour contact. We only wish that you would have let us know while you were here, so that we could have corrected the issues. The air conditioning does smell a bit upon startup (it is a closed environment and some smells can initially be picked up from the engine room ), which is why we had it running and the boat cooled prior to your arrival. The A/C does have a limited capacity, and cannot keep up when the windows or door are open. One of the two A/C compressors is located under the forward bunk, and is therefore noticeable when running (similar to the sound of your refrigerator, if you were sleeping in your kitchen). The bunk cushions are the standard equipment that comes on the boat, and none of our previous guests have mentioned that they were inadequate or uncomfortable. In fact, most people remark about the great nights’ sleep they had onboard. The pillows and bedding are replenished at the beginning of each season. Thank you for pointing out the tear on the sofa, that has been repaired. As you know, there is no room for a dishwasher onboard, and possibly the previous guest was not very good at hand washing. We apologize that you needed to rewash the dishes. The oversight of handing over the key at check-in was unfortunate, as our normal staff was not on duty that afternoon. It is a very safe marina and neighborhood, but we certainly would not expect you to leave it unlocked, and we are glad you had the key for the remainder of your stay. We apologize that we were not on top of our game when you arrived, and sincerely wish that we would have had the opportunity to make your stay more enjoyable.
