Overview

About the property

Rest and retreat in stunning countryside betw. Coast, lakes, peat + mountains

"A stranger is a friend

you have not met yet "...

"A stranger is a friend,

you do not know yet ... "

Irish proverb

The Calla School House was built over 100 years ago and served as the village school of Ballyconneely until the 1970's. Afterwards the house was extended and used privately; bought from us in 2013, renovated and completely renovated considering the old structures.

Unique is the location of the house on the 'Wild Atlantic Way': right on the coast, framed by the 'bog', (bog), a lake and mountains: Connemara pure! Near Clifden, Connemara's capital with many restaurants and shopping, and Roundstone, one of Ireland's prettiest seaside towns.

The coastline offers many of Connemara's most beautiful beaches of varying character in the surrounding area. Calla Beach is within walking distance in 10 minutes. Our attraction: hiking at low tide on the uninhabited little island (Inis Stavros) :)

The house has 3 bedrooms, 1 living room and a dining room, a large kitchen, 1 bathroom with shower and two sinks. The glass-fronted veranda offers unparalleled views across Maumeen Lake, where the sky is mirrored, the moorland where sheep and horses graze, and the Twelve Bens mountain range.

The house is equipped with a new gas central heating / hot water, whose consumption is individually controlled with a timer.

The energy costs (minus the first 10,00 €) will be charged separately after meter reading and deducted from the deposit after departure.

The house is surrounded by an approximately 2000 square meter garden, which has several terraces with seating and small tables. There is also a picnic table. In the so-called "Swimming pool"

can be protected from the wind with a view of the mountains and the Maumeen Lake wonderful rest!

Let's talk to one of our guests:

".... Calla Old School House is not a holiday home in the true sense. Rather, it is a home borrowed from the owner for a week or more. And that's also how it feels like home. The drawers are full of useful things, Tesafilm, writing utensils, sewing kit, tools, hand mixer, casserole, etc. The house offers plenty of space: a large living room, dining room and kitchen, bathroom, three bedrooms and a conservatory. In addition, it is very tastefully decorated and with great attention to detail. Not forgetting the beautiful garden, which can even come up with a seat and garden furniture, for Ireland an absolute rarity, as here actually gravel courts dominate the house. Everything complies with German standards, dishwasher, coffee maker, central heating, hot water, etc. Not to mention the wonderful little details such. B. the electric blanket in the master bedroom. We also enjoyed the fireplace, although we still have not figured out how to make peat briquettes burn. With us they just smiled. We enjoyed living, reading, cooking, sitting in the garden in the sun, watching the sunset, eating in the conservatory, collecting shells on the beach, visiting the island at low tide and listening to the wind. Anyone who misses the internet here can only be a playful teenager - just like our son. But even he had to admit that the house is just great ..... "

We loved this beautiful cottage.

  • 5 of 5

Cottage is neat as a pin and quite lovely. There is a working fireplace in the living room. We spent our time reading there or in the glass enclosed porch. We felt very at home there

It is nicely located and close to Roundstone, Ballyconneely and Clifden

The owners and the housekeeper were so very nice and easy to work with

We are already talking about going back

Old Calla School House ( June 17th –June 24th 2017)

When we entered Old Calla School House we did feel welcome straight away!

The atmosphere, the smell, the flowers is the vase, the vieuw at the Atlantic and in the back on some of the Twelve Pins, everything was just right for a lovely week at the Connemara!

And we did enjoy every minute of that week in this lovely house at this very special place.

Our hosts left enough tourist information to keep us busy. Also enough peace in this fully equipped house (really nothing missing!) and the environment to sit outside just enjoying the view and the lovely garden. We do miss our every day walk to the beach ( only ten minutes). Great fun walking at low tide across the beach to the isle where only sheep are living.

Almost every evening we made a real peat fire in the living room. You get used to this peculiar smell and that we also miss. One solution: we have to go back to Old Calla School House along the Wild Atlantic Way again!!

Ein geschenktes Zuhause

  • 5 of 5

Alles entspricht deutschem Standard, Spülmaschine, Kaffeemaschine, Zentralheizung, warmes Wasser usw.

Gabriele + Hans

Ein Haus der Geborgenheit ....ein Haus für die Seele ...

  • 5 of 5

The Irish poet and philosopher John O 'Donohue describes Connemara with the following words:' Such landscapes are wild sanctuaries because they totally at peace with himself and quietly to draw us into their knowledge and silence. Almost imperceptibly gives way to the inner pressure of the soul. The senses are calmed, and the inward world in us is moved by this ancient beauty .... '
