Come get away from daily life and unwind in our farmhouse, located in the heart of Johnsons Orchards and Peaks of Otter Winery.

Elmo's Rest is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, at the foot of the Peaks of Otter. In the early 1900's, Elmo Johnson and his wife Freddie lived and raised their family in the house. They planted their first apple tree in 1919. The secluded home is in the middle of 250 acres of orchards, lush pastures, and shady woods. It's located 1/2 mile from the nearest dwelling. It's surrounded by the animals that you would expect to find on a self-sufficient farm of that era. Animals include cattle, horses, burros, dogs, cats, pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, rabbits, and turkeys.
From the first blossom of spring, to creek wading in summer, to the last crisp apple of fall, to the snow-covered hills of winter, there is a time for you to relax or to be active. The property boasts three ponds for fishing, creeks for wading, 'deer' trails for walking and hiking, and wonderful rolling land for cross-country skiing.

There are breathtaking views in all directions for viewing or photographing. The home is seven miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway and seven miles from the National D-Day Memorial. The Peaks of Otter Winery which makes 'Fruit of the Farm Wine' is located on the farm. Nearby, you can find fast food and gourmet restaurants.
The rambling 19th-Century farmhouse is furnished as if someone stepped out in the 1930's or 40's, yet it has all the modern conveniences of home. The farmhouse is completely furnished to
accommodate groups, families, and couples. The home has five bedrooms and sleeps up to 14 guests. Three of the bedrooms each have two double beds, one bedroom has two bunk beds (four beds), and another bedroom has a single bed and a twin baby bed. The house also has a living room, dining room, two bathrooms, and plenty of porches for sitting. The fully-equipped kitchen has a coffee maker, microwave, dishes, and pots and pans.

The home also has a washer/dryer, phone, Smart TV with Soundbar, Linens and towels are provided.
The property has a barbecue grill, horseshoes, and a seasonal farm store. It also has creeks for wading, and ponds for fishing. Smoking is allowed outdoors.
AND you might want to hunt for the famous Beale Treasure.

Area attractions within one hour's drive include the Peaks of Otter Winery, making 'Fruit of the Farm Wine'; Johnson's Orchards, over 200 different varieties of apples; the National D-Day Memorial - Bedford lost more men per capita than any other place on D-Day; Smith Mountain Lake with 500 miles of shoreline fishing, boating, swimming, and outfitting guides; Appomattox Court House, where the nation reunited; Center in the Square: Roanoke's culture star, featuring museums and galleries; Lexington, with the George Marshall Library, W+L, Lee's Tomb, and more; Poplar Forest, Thomas Jefferson's Summer Home; Lynchburg: home of the Bateaux Festival on the James River; Bedford Museum, Dixie Caverns, VPI, Natural Bridge, Jefferson National Forest, Booker T Washington National Park, Holy Land (USA), world-famous Beale Buried Treasure, and much more.

Country living, country hospitality
From the moment we arrived at the property and identified ourselves as the family staying at Elmo's rest, we were treated like part of the family. We arrived at the house to find everything clean and ready even though we were a couple hours early. The house is a century old so floors creak and some doors stick a bit. There is a giant field across the driveway from the house and the kids disappeared to explore the creek and the pond. There is a nice collection of farm animals. Overall a very private stay with just a few farm workers and the owners passing by a few times. It really is like you have a large acreage farm to yourselves. A winding gravel road brings you straight from the house to the Blue Ridge Parkway at Sharp Top trail head. A few from our party enjoyed the wine tasting and reported being treated like family there too, Wifi is good, but the cellular was not. Great time to connect and play games and turn off the phones for a taste of time before we were slaves to devices. Thanks for a great time.

Peaceful and private
This is a charming, old farmhouse full of antiques. Despite the occasional sloping floors and doors that need an extra push and jiggle to close, there have been a number of upgrades in the house including bathrooms and gas fireplaces in the rooms. This is a working orchard and vineyard open to the public, but the house is set away from that area and remains quite private and peaceful during their operating hours. Great fun to visit with the farm animals and get fresh eggs from the chickens in the morning. Kitchen is tiny and there is no dishwasher, but all the appliances are in good shape. If you like fancy with a nearby social and entertainment scene, this may not be the place for you. If you like the country, farm smells, roosters crowing, cows mooing, and a place to curl up with a good book, this could be the place for you.

Better than the pictures
This was an amazing stay on the farm. The pictures definitely do not so it justice. The house in an old farm house and it is decorated to match. The orchard has so many animals to see and the landscape is just beautiful. The host answer questions quickly and go above and beyond to meet your needs and wants. Highly recommend.
