About Bill and Tanya Schmidt

We love Clear Lake! The Surf Ballroom is what brought us to the town. We came for a concert and fell in love with the area. Our kids love to come to Clear Lake for all the family fun activities.

Bill and Tanya Schmidt purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Bill and Tanya Schmidt chose Clear Lake

We chose to buy a vacation/rental home in this location because, it is walking distance to the Surf, restaurants, city park, beach, Lady of the Lake, shops and the list goes on. A typical summer day includes~ packing a lunch, biking down to the beach, swimming, playing at the park, getting a cookie at Cookies etc. OR buying an ice cream treat from the ice cream truck (complete w/bell and all),bumming around the shops and biking back...great day!

What makes this cottage unique

Off season there's still plenty to do...stay in the cozy cottage, play games, watch a movie, go to the Lakes theatre, head to Mason City for some shopping or visit the museums. There's numerous events going on in town monthly, Christmas on the Lake, Kites in Feb., Buddy Holly winter festival at the Surf Ballroom, 4th of July celebration etc. Every time we are in Clear Lake we're never ready to leave!

Family Thanksgiving

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay at the Surf-N-Sleep Cottage. It was above our expectations with the added mini room and another bed. Our family of 6 was very comfortable and we had 9 for Thanksgiving dinner that worked out just fine. We would stay again and recommend it to anyone.

The house was very clean and well maintained.

The layout of the bedrooms was surprising. They are very close together. We had a three year old and an 18 month old who used a pac-n-play. We put the pac-n-play in the porch area at night, and an adult slept downstairs to be near him. The location was nice, not too far from the lake.

Location, size and arrangement of property very good

  • 4 of 5

Pros:

- plenty of room for a family of six

- cleaner than resorts we have stayed at that were double the price.

- good selection of toys, games, books and electronic entertainment. Excellent Verizon reception and wifi.

- comfortable

- quiet area.

- clos to lake which is visible from the home

- off street parking

- nearby farmers market was fun and that's where we did our produce shopping.

- kitchen is a nescessity for our large family and this had everything we needed . Don't forget to bring your own napkins and paper towels or you'll be running to the nearby dollar general!

CONS:

- small toilet--an elongated model would be nice and would fit the space

-- having to bring your own linens and blankets. There were a few available which we did use and launder but we found these items really put a dent in our minivan space.

-- it's rural Iowa, you have to drive a ways to get to anything if you aren't a beach comber type.

Owner's Response: Hi, Thanks for the review! Sorry about the napkins and paper towels- those are usually stocked, as well as dish soap, hand soap, laundry soap, tp etc. It must've gotten overlooked the last time it was cleaned. For bedding- we provide dish cloths, dish towels, fitted sheets, pillows and pillow cases and have renters bring their own flat sheets (if they want) and blankets...majority tend to just bring a blanket for beds. We used to provide all bedding, towels etc. but our cleaner was having to spend way too much time doing laundry and we were often missing items so decided to just provide some. Yes, there are blankets there that people can use- just wash yourself so thanks for doing that! Toilet?? It's just a regular toilet. Stuff to do- Clear Lake is definitely more of a hoppin' town in the summer- tons going on every weekend. Fall- Spring is still nice, just probably not quite as much to do but there is still at least one event every month- Harvest Festival, Christmas on the lake, Winter dance party, Kites on the lake etc. Events are listed at www.clearlakeiowa.com Thanks so much for your business!!

This is a great place to stay! House was very clean, organized and had everything we needed. Owners are super easy to work with, and responded right away with any questions I had. Clear Lake is AMAZING! My family loved spending the 4th of July here. We hope to be back next year.
