The Country House Casa da Laranja was built by the end of the 18th century as a residence and storehouse of the plantation superintendent of an orange plantation. At that time, fresh oranges were brought to England by sail ships.
The garden has access to the surrounding meadows where cows graze occasionally.
From the terraces on the west and east side of the house are both the volcanic mountain ranges of Lagoa das Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo to be seen. You can also see the north coast, the Bay of Ribeira Grande and even the highest mountain Pico da Vara.
In the morning you can have breakfast on the terrace with these wide views and in the evening enjoy the sunsets. All rooms have access to a terrace.
The house has two bedrooms one with a double bed and one with two single beds. A reading room with sofa can also be used.
The large kitchen with fireplace is equipped with all necessary features and like all the other rooms with a view of the coast line and the sea.
The house has central heating for the winter months, although de temperatures on the subtropical island in the average rarely fall below 11°C.
Due to the relatively central location of the house all the interesting points of the island are easily accessible by car.
Shops and supermarkets are in the Ponta Delgada or Pico da Pedra.
From the house you can go for walks, always with the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean in view.
The proximity to the Batalha Golf Course offers golf enthusiasts a good starting point, without much travel time (3-4 min) to reach the greens with splendid views to the blue ocean background.
The offer for nature lovers such as: swimming, surfing, sailing, horseback riding, whale and dolphin watching, scuba diving, snorkeling, hiking, fishing, swimming in waterfalls, canyoning, etc., are almost limitless. To describe all of this is beyond the scope of this brief introduction. There are good guides on the internet or books to prepare your visit.

This is a lovely house, full of character, all rooms are spacious with beautiful high wooden beam vaulted ceilings. Furniture is simple and tasteful, in keeping with the house. Great shower although bathroom could do with a little makeover, the sink was a little awkward to use due to position of taps but not a problem. We ate in 4 of our 7 nights as it was such a lovely environment to savour. The kitchen is very well equipped although no oven. There is a long terrace either side, one for sunsets (although not fully), the other for terrific sunrises. Beautiful flowers in the gardens, the views very relaxing and far better than we expected. Candles and flowers on the kitchen table very much appreciated, plus the information leaflets in one of the lounges....nice touches. Our greeting was very welcoming and we felt instantly at home. The position is very peaceful, in a quiet lane with just 2 houses the other side. It is an easy 15 minute to drive to Ponta Delegada where there are numerous restaurants and about the same to Ribiera Grande. There is a good beach approx 10 mins on the north coast just before Ribiera Grande called Santa Barbara (white sign) which also has a good restaurant with sea views. If you are travelling on the south coast between Lagoa and Vila Franca there is a fabulous fish restaurant overlooking the sea at Ponta da Caloura. Driving was very easy and there is so much to see, all the lakes, forests, coasts, tea plantation, hot springs and the hydrangeas along the roadsides are a wonderful picture. We had a fabulous week, so many astounding views and a peaceful haven to return to each night, very special. Thoroughly recommend.
Two regrets......firstly not going on a whaling/dolphin trip and secondly not taking up Marcos kind offer of a tour of the pineapple plantation .....another time.
une vue magnifique, cette maison placée au milieu de l'ile de Sao Miguel nous a permis de vaguer sur toute l'ile et la découvrir,c'est le paradis ce qui nous incite pour nottre prochaine visite d'acheter une maison pour profiter d'un endroit calme et loin des problèmes de l'immigration qui est en train de spoiler l'europe qui nous est chère

Wir haben uns sehr sehr wohl gefühlt. Das Haus hat unsere Erwartungen voll erfüllt. Gemütlich, heimelig, schön.
Wir wurden von Marco und Sofia freundlich empfangen. Marco hat uns on top auch eine Führung durch eine Ananasplantage gegeben und uns vieles erklärt.
Wir haben uns einfach nur wohl gefühlt und kamen abends nach unseren Ausflügen gerne in das gemütliche Haus zurück.
Wir werden die Azoren, das Haus und Eure Gastfreundschaft gerne weiter empfehlen.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Casa da Laranja. The home is clean, comfortable and spacious - much larger than expected. The kitchen, living room and sitting room make up the front portion of the house with doors off each room leading to a large stone terrace. A wide center hall w/ linen storage brings you to two large bedrooms and the bathroom. Doors off each bedroom lead to another large stone terrace off the rear of the home. We were fortunate to experience near perfect weather so we took full advantage of both the front and rear terraces. They were ideal for relaxing and enjoying the beautiful ocean views. I think we may have had breakfast outside every day! Golf, beaches, and hiking are all close by and there are several grocery stores within a few minutes drive from the house. Ponta Delgada and the airport are also easily accessible. Marco, the owner, was extremely helpful and attentive. He made arrangements for us to tour the pineapple plantation and even to borrow an iron during our stay. The transaction went smoothly (no need to wire money or pay bank fees) and Marco responded to all of our inquiries quickly. This was our first visit to the Azores and we hope to return again soon. The people are friendly, the food is amazing and the views - gorgeous! Don't hesitate to visit Sao Miguel and Casa da Laranja.
Wir hatten einen tollen Urlaub in der Casa da Laranja. Die Betreuung duch Marco war hervorragend. Vielen Dank für die tolle und sehr informative Besichtigung der Ananasplantage sowie den Marktbesuch in Ponta Delgarda. Das Haus ist sehr schön und zentral gelegen und somit ein toller Ausgangspunkt für Ausflüge und Wanderungen auf der Insel. Das Haus entsprach den Beschreibungen. Sofern man Wäsche waschen wollte, so wäre das durch die nette Haushälterin Sofia gegen Entgelt erfolgt. Einen Grill würde der Vermieter auch umghend besorgen. Fur einen perfekten Aufenthalt hätten uns nur ein Backofen, eine Geschirrspülmaschine und schönere Gartenmöbel gefehlt. Dieses war uns aber durch die ausführliche Beschreibung des Hauses bekannt. Rundrum hatten wir zwei sehr schöne Wochen in der Casa da Laranja und würden dieses Hauses jederzeit wieder buchen.
When I looked at this property the first time, almost all of the reviews were in German. I may not recall as much German as my grade 12 teacher would have liked, but I could recognize all the superlatives in the various reviews on the site, so my interest was piqued. As a result, my wife, sister-in-law and I spent a week in March in this marvelous house. The property itself is lovely, very much in sympathy with its surroundings and offering everything one could need. The rooms were spacious and character-filled, the furnishings were comfortable and everything we needed was to be found in the house. When we didn't have the tools to free a bird that had become trapped in one of the vents, Jose (who pretty much re-built the house) was over in no time to set things right. We were additionally fortunate to have met the owner, Marco, who gave us very helpful insight into the history of the property. Everyone connected with the property was friendly and helpful to the max, including Marco setting up an option to make payment much more convenient for North Americans.
For us, the only think lacking in relation to our stay was the outside temperature: a few more degrees warmer and that huge patio by the front door (or the one out back for that matter) would have been very tempting to relax on for hours and simply soak in the views across the fields and down to the omnipresent ocean. Even in the fairly moderate temperatures during our stay, the terrace was a bit addictive.
The location is ideal. For those in our group who "had to" spend chunks of each morning in a cafe having espresso and pastries, there were multiple choices within a reasonable drive of the house. Getting in and out of Ponta Delgada was very easy and accessing any other point on the island was easily achieved from the cottage. You have easy access to everything without the noise of being in a city or town or even of being right on a main road (the house is about 200m off the road from Ponta Delgada to Fenais da Luz).
Sao Miguel became a destination for us because it lay between where my wife and I live in Canada and where my sister-in-law lives in Lisbon. Having spent a week there, it deserves a traveler's interest on its own merits--friendly people, beautiful scenery, wonderful hikes and a wide range of excellent food options, all easily accessible from Europe or North America. We would gladly have spent more time in the Azores and at Marco's "cottage".
From the villa are beautiful walks on foot to the nearby extinct volcano chains or on the coast.
By car you can reach all the interesting sights relatively quickly.
At the Lagoa das Sete Cidades, a lake in a volcano, you can swimming, hiking and go with the kayak on a voyage of discovery. We highly recommend a picnic on the shore. From there you can also access to the western tip of the island,
