Property type house
Minimum Stay 1 - 2 nights

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

The historic Clawson House sits on top of Clawson Hill adjacent to Castle Rock in the heart of the town of Bisbee, which has been designated a National Historic District. The Territorial house, originally built in 1895 for mine manager, Spencer Clawson, was expanded in the 1920’s and now occupies over two acres of level and hillside land, with views out in three directions, including views over Downtown Bisbee out to mountains in Mexico.

The house includes wrap-around porches on three sides, with large rooms that incorporate original woodwork and built-in cabinetry, floor-to-ceiling French doors, original hardware, and sliding pocket doors. The house has been a perennial favorite on both Bisbee home and garden tours.

Downstairs, there is a large entrance hall, large living and dining rooms, downstairs bedroom with bath and shower (shower in bath tub), TV room or study, fully-equipped large kitchen with separate breakfast area, and screened-in porch. The living room has a gas fireplace. Upstairs is a large hall and two large bedrooms that share a bath. Each of the three bedrooms has a queen-sized bed. The upstairs bathroom has a Victorian clawfoot bath that is outfitted as a shower (in bath tub) as well. Outside is a xeriscape cottage garden that blooms March through November, and a large outdoor eating area for al fresco dining.

Due to the age of the house, and the fact that it is built one story off the ground, the house is NOT handicapped-accessible. There are staircases with 12 steps (shown in pictures) to climb to enter the house. Once in the house, however, the first floor (with downstairs bedroom and bath) is completely level. The bath has a standard bathtub with shower head.

Bisbee is a former mining town, located a mile high in the Mule Mountains, and one-and-one-half hours drive southeast of Tucson. Subsequent to the mine closing in the mid-1970’s, Bisbee has emerged as a friendly, fun and quirky artists/crafts town, and in addition is a good center for exploring nearby areas such as Ramsey Canyon (one of the premier birdwatching areas in the United States), Tombstone, the Coronado National Monument, Kartchner Caverns, as well as the Chiracahua National Monument and Forest. There are numerous hiking opportunities in and around Bisbee, and a public golf course is five miles away. The town offers a number of fun restaurants, many of which are within a short walk. Also within walking distance is the High Desert Market. The market is only a few hundred yards from the house and serves a great breakfast!

Because of its altitude, Bisbee has moderate year round temperatures, with a temperature 'spring' that begins in April and a 'water' spring that begins in July, with short and cooling 'monsoon' rains coming through the mountains through early September. Many residents of Tucson and Phoenix use Bisbee as their summer 'get-away.'

The house is not air conditioned, but there are a number of ceiling fans in the rooms, including the bedrooms. Most homes in Bisbee do not have air conditioning.

While winter temperatures are moderate by most people's standards, with many bright, sunny days, Bisbee (as with other historic towns in Arizona and New Mexico) is located at significant altitude. It is NOT South Florida (or Palm Springs, for that matter). Your can check out Bisbee temperatures on a number of web pages.

Bisbee is increasingly being publicized as a vacation destination, and on March 29, 2002, Money Magazine listed Bisbee on its 'Best Places to Vacation' list of ten top vacation destinations, citing its climate and accessibility to a variety of nearby attractions In addition, the National Trust for Historic Preservation added Bisbee to its 2005 list of America's Dozen Distinctive Destinations -- the first Arizona city to make this list of 'unique and lovingly preserved communities.' (click on 'More Bisbee Information' link below for copy of articles).

For the fashion conscious, Kate Spade featured Bisbee in a 12 page photo shoot that appeared in the March 2006 Vogue and Town and Country magazines.

Due to the many antiques which are in the house, the house is NOT suitable for families with young children unless they are closely supervised or used to living with antiques. The house is restricted to no more than three couples as there is three queen size beds only, with no other sleeping arrangements, such as pull out couches. No Smoking. There is a very helpful onsite caretaker on the property who occupies a separate apartment, and can be contacted to provide additional assistance during your stay. The apartment is located underneath the house, with its separate outside entrance, and in no way affects the privacy of guests.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome with payment of an additonal refundable deposit.

Routine cleaning of linens and towels is provided at no additional charge, as is routine vacuuming of the premises after guests leave. We reserve the right to charge for unusual cleaning associated with spills, stains, etc.

A Piece of Bisbee History!

  • 5 of 5

This was a perfect spot for a small family reunion. The house is perched on the top of Clawson Hill overlooking the town of Bisbee. All three bedrooms were large and accomodating for six guests. Thanks to Lee, the inn keeper, the furnishings are tastfully arranged throughout the house. I can't think of one thing that was not provided in the house. The attention to detail superceded our expectations. We loved the town of Bisbee, but the "star" was the Clawson House. You should not miss this gem!

My wife, Jennifer grew up in Douglas with family that has lived for years in Bisbee. Over the years we have stayed in various hotels and have rented houses in Bisbee. This past month was special as my wife and family celebrated a milestone birthday. She came across these reviews about The Clawson House and we felt comfortable to roll the dice and book a visit. I could spend a whole lot of time matching words with everyone else about the awesome amenities the Clawson has to offer, so instead I will just summarize by saying, this is the BEST place to stay in Bisbee. Do not read these reviews and be off put by staying at a place that has a caretaker on site, once you meet Lee you will realize that he is probably one of the best parts of staying here. We spent thirty minutes just hanging in the parking area chatting about his love for the place (the house and Bisbee). The house is gorgeous, super clean and super classy. It is a classic and wildly comfortable, I wish we could have stayed longer.

A Bisbee Must Stay!

  • 5 of 5

I learned of this beautiful place several months ago and was excited to stay at this charming, historical, house on the hill during my travels to Bisbee. Lee was a great host and the house was everything expected and more. It's a great place for friends, family and creating a memorable experience!

A week in Bisbee

  • 5 of 5

On arrival, we were greeted by Lee, and made to feel very welcome. The property was in a great position overlooking Bisbee, the garden was very well tended with plenty of places to sit in sun or shade, we were fascinated by the amount of birds it attracted. The inside of the property was everything and more than we expected. We have rented many properties over the years, but Clawston House was one of the best equipped. Lee was a great host, and pointed us in the right direction, shops, restaurants etc. A great holiday had by us.

January at the Clawson House

  • 5 of 5

We spent the month of January at the historic Clawson House 2018. Such an enjoyable visit with so many thing to learn about in the town of Bisbee and the surrounding area. Lee, our host, provided everything to make our stay even better. The restaurants were varied, with so many to travel to, in just a short walking distance. A fire in the living room at night, gave us time to reflect on our adventures during the day. We stayed with another couple each having our own space in this fabulous home.

Lee has a wonderful garden with chickens coming soon ( fresh eggs ). We watched the "Super Blood Moon", through clear skies from the patio, knowing the next day would be filled with sunshine. What a great vacation.

Thanks Lee.

  • 5 of 5

The property is perfectly located. Very easy to access and lots of parking.

The house is pristine, very well appointed with all of the comforts you could ask for. The art that is featured throughout the Clawson house is fabulous.

Lee, the host is so friendly and fun! Thanks Lee!

We will definitely be returning.
