A little "peace" of heaven on earth !!!

My husband & I had searched for a place to vacation on the Key without much success, the HomeAway site was our last attempt to find the perfect place for our vacation.....and we found it. The cottage was absolutely fantastic, the decor and layout were great and it came furnished with everything you needed. The grounds were breathtaking and each day you would discover something new and taking a dip in the saltwater pool to cool off was the best. The beach area was slightly different from the pictures, but that is all part of the ever changing beauty of the ocean. You can access the beach, take long walks, sit under the palm trees & read, fish, swim, watch the boats go by and enjoy the beautiful sunsets. The Mirmans are delightful people who gave us many helpful suggestions for restaurants, grocery store/farmers market and sightseeing adventures. We enjoyed the tour of the grounds when we arrived and took many pictures of the variety of lush tropical plants. We would absolutely recommend this for the perfect vacation location, if you want to feel total relaxation, like time stands still this is the place.

A few disappointments, but great overall.

The cottage was very nice and, with one major exception, as advertised (see #2 below). Although the cottage is on the same property as their house, the owners respected our privacy and never intruded. (We only met one of them, and that was the day we arrived.) There are a few issues:

1. As another reviewer noted, there are no curtains in the bathroom - sitting on the toilet or standing in the shower, you get a perfect view of the owner's house (and, I assume, vice versa). We bought some black plastic trash bags and taped them over the windows - problem solved.

2. The description of the cottage said that it included a 'private beach'. If you walk around behind the owner's house, there is a part of their back yard with sand on it; however, it terminates at a sea wall that drops off about 5 feet to the shore. There is no walkable beach, just a spot where you can look at the water. Also, about 100 yards from the sea wall is a sand bar; the night that we arrived, about 20 boats were gathered around the sand bar with music blasting. Not a very peaceful spot. We found the public beaches, though not really within walking distance, to be much nicer.

3. Several times per day throughout our stay, we found some weird bugs in one section of the bedroom area. I have no idea what they were - they were about 1/4 inch long, no wings or visable legs, but they had a tongue-like thing that would come out from under them and pull them along - and it would come out from either end. Harmless, I'm sure, but kinda creepy. We swept up about 20 to 30 of them each time, about 3 times per day.

So, once we readjusted our expectations, we had a wonderful time. Fortunately, we had a rental car, so we were able to drive about 2 miles to the real beach each day. The cottage was comfortable, the grounds were beautiful, and the pool was lovely.

Owner's Response: 1. Curtains in the bathroom. Firstly, virtually everyone loves the bathroom. So many of our guests took photos of the bathroom because they want to re do their bathroom with the same look. The cottage is raised about two feet. There are three small windows at the top of the wall in the bathroom, It is easy to look out. But, in front of the windows is a clump of fish tail palms, which makes it impossible to look into the window. In addition, attempting to look into the windows, the viewer has to look up as the elevation of the cottage and windows enable you at best to see the ceiling. You are unable to look into the windows from our house because of the palm trees. The reason we did not use curtains, is most guests like the airy feel. 2. We have about 150 feet on the Gulf. There is a sea wall, but a stairs with three steps going down. Most of the time the sand goes out about 30 feet in front of the stairs. When this guest stayed in the cottage, we had constant rain and the water was higher than usual. No one else had a problem going on to the beach. We always state the beach is not a long walking beach, but a private beach. The sand bar is about 500 feet from our beach and on weekends local people bring their boats and enjoy the water. Most people enjoy watching the boats and activities. No one has ever complained about the sound, considering the distance from our beach. 3. We have an exterminator to spray the cottage. Neither the housekeeper or guests mentioned these bugs. If this guest mentioned the pests, we would have had the exterminator come right out. 4. If they would have told me they wanted the public beach, there is a parking area much closer. Most of the guest try the public beach one day and spend the rest of the time at our beach because it is quieter, private and no crowds. 5. I realized the guest was a complainer when I showed them around, I picked some rare fruits and gave it to them. They spit them out. Every other person loved these fruits. They are very sweet with great texture.

Review for Mr. and Mrs. Mirman

  • 5 of 5

We were very grateful that the Mirman's were willing to accommodate our last minute reservation for their cottage on Siesta Key. We were greeted by Mr. Mirman in one of his many artistic and well cared for gardens. His passion about their property was easily seen and very much appreciated. The cottage is charming,, comfortable, cozy, fully equipped and was recently redecorated. We immediately felt at home and knew that this was the perfect place for a week of relaxation and rejuvenation. The beach area and gazebo were a great place for peaceful relaxation in a serene, beautiful setting. The grounds were spectacular and highlighted by an impressive Koi Pond, fountains, and flowers. The swimming pool was large, well maintained and very enjoyable. The grounds around the pool, their main home, and the beach were all tastefully done. Our hosts gave us several suggestions on places of interest, events , and eating establishments which we enjoyed. If this sounds like a paradise it was----Kudos to our hosts and we certainly hope to return soon. Sincerely, Jim and Susan Colt

Perfect treasure on Siesta Key and wonderful hosts!!!

  • 5 of 5

We couldn't have enjoyed our stay more in this beautiful oasis. The hosts of the property were very kind and made everything available to us for an absolutely perfect vacation. Alvin has a wonderful knowledge of the plants around his area and has done a beautiful job in nurturing them and the environment is a tropical oasis. You have a beautiful private beach area to watch sunsets, fish and enjoy beach time. In the afternoons we would migrate to the beautiful pool. We felt very private and welcome by the hosts. A couple things to know if you visit the property is they are very considerate about keep thier dogs away from the guests, especially when you have a pet like we did. The shower windows did not have a covering but no problem we just clipped up a small trash bag. Very minor things for such a wonderful paradise. Highly recommend visiting this property. It is really a special treasure. Thank you Ilene and Alvin you were perfect hosts.

Perfect Honeymoon Spot

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I recently went on our honeymoon there. It really is perfect for all ages. We are 20 years old and it was a perfect spot. Private pool, private beach, super close to the village and siesta key public beach. If you're looking for a quiet get away or a romantic week, this is your place. The shower is very big. The air is very cold which is nice when it's in the 90's! The pool was very clean and perfect temp. Their grounds are so beautiful and if you're interested in trees or anything like that they have a lot of amazing stuff and will be happy to share that with you. The renters are more than helpful and are willing to be at service but don't bother you if you don't initiate contact. If you ever have questions while staying just give them a call.
