About Catherine and David

We have owned the Sharpsburg Cottage since 2000.

Catherine and David purchased this cottage in 2000

Why Catherine and David chose West Virginia

It is only 1 hr 15 minutes from Washington DC. It is a great get away from the hustle and bustle. You can truly relax here at the cottage. Take a nap on the hammock or unwind in the hot tub.

What makes this cottage unique

We fell in love with this property because of its location. The C&O Canal Tow Path is located just beyond our front yard. We spend time walking and biking along the path during our visits to the house. There is a small country store two doors down where you can walk and get ice cream. One of the first things we do is walk down to the river and take a dip. We are five minutes from Antietam and close to many other local attractions. We would spend every weekend in the country if we could. The cottage is fully equipped as if it were are primary residence. Our lives have become very busy so we don't get to spend as much time there as we would like, so we have decided to share our wonderful home with others. ENJOY!!

Notes:

We provide a water cooler (cold/hot) water and 2 5 gallon bottle for supplemental drinking water.

Clean, close to activities, needs some updates.

  • 2 of 5

The property was clean and was close proximity to many activities/towns even though it is in a wooded setting. We enjoyed visiting the Antietam Battle Field, Hagerstown outlets, dining in Shepardstown & Frederick, and visiting D.C. It has the feeling of an old family hunting cabin and could certainly use some updates. The upstairs beds were not comfortable and sank down in the middle. There is no wifi making it difficult to plan and research for nearby restaurants/activities although the owner has put together a nice binder with some information.

Very rude owner

  • 2 of 5

I would love to write a great comment because we really did love our stay, even with the wasps, hornets, ants in the cabinets, and all the pet hair under the couch. Nobodies home is perfect. It truly was a great place. However I messed up on my departure date. I thought I booked till Friday July 28th. I found out late Thursday night I was wrong. We received a very abrupt message from Catherine stating that check out time is 11am!!!! Her cleaning crew was there and left because we were still there and now she is stuck paying them twice. We offered to pay for the cleaning crews drive out there and for the extra stay and had no problem admitting that we had made a mistake.with the departure date. I told her I thought she was rude with her comment. Her only response was that we were rude for not following the rules. We fixed a broken bike there, bought hornet spray and left it there, cleaned out her cabinets to rid of the ants, cleaned up other people's dog mess, and even swept up down on the patio. You don't speak to your paying customers that way. People make mistakes. It's not like we didn't care , we were very upset that we made this mistake. We felt awful, but she made no attempt to be understanding. There wasn't even anyone coming in on Friday and if there was we would have left in a heartbeat.

Owner's Response: When a renter overstays their rental term it causes cascading problems for us, but I don't get upset. I simply pointed out that she had overstayed her move out time of 11am and that I would be charged extra fees. We do offer our own bikes to guests and if one broke, I thank her for fixing it. Since the house is in the woods, we do get ants in the kitchen once in a while, we leave spray in case they come back and have sprayed for hornets nests outside as well. We love all of guests and don't understand her overreaction to this situation. I will never understand why people want to try and ruin other people's livelyhoods by trashing their reputation for their error.

Summer Retreat Away From It All

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I have been coming to this cottage for a few years, and we love it each time. We sit out on the patios (upstairs and downstairs) and catch the cool breeze or watch bunnies and birds in the yard. Two hawks could been seen flying from the neighbor's yard on a regular basis. You can relax and get away from it all in this cottage. You can drive to the next town (less than 5 miles) to do shopping, antiquing, and dining. Nutters is very close, and we would have home made ice cream often. I recommend this cottage as it is always super clean when we arrive, has lots of pots/pans/utensils to cook with, has a bbq grill, and the yard is well manicured.

Sharpsburg is lovely but the house is creaky and buggy.

  • 1 of 5

Lots of insects were a frequent challenge. Hot tub didnt work. Washing machine doesnt work. The key box is a nightmare to maneuver. But on the up side there are some games to play eith and the yard is pretty.

Owner's Response: We have rented our home since 2008 and have never had any of these issues come up. Our guests love our neat and clean home. This guest, left his trash inside the house, left the lights on and our home unsecured. We do not advertise a washer/dryer due to the water situation. The hot tub was broken and I let him know ahead of time and the technician came while he was there but could not fix it. We just had a brand new hot tub installed! It's really nice.

Wonderful cottage for adults and kids alike.

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the cottage. The kids loved the tree house and swings. We cooked some meals, ate too much Nutter's ice cream and just relaxed. It was a great vacation! Thank you!
