Relaxing Atmosphere: This is an excellent place to relax and enjoy the outdoors. Enjoy views of the manicured front yard, Potomac River (winter) and the C&O Canal Towpath from the large deck. The hot tub is on the deck and is a truly awesome place to sit and enjoy the tranquil surroundings. It is really quiet and dark at night. Enjoy the porch swing or relax in the hammock!
Great Location: We are located at mile marker 77 on the C&O Canal Tow Path. The Potomac River is practically in the front yard. There is a public boat ramp close by. The Antietam Battlefield is within 3 miles of the house. Snyders Landing Road is a dead end, very little traffic. We are 5 minutes from Shepardstown West Virginia. Shephardstown is a quaint little college town with specialty shops and restaurants on the campus of Shephardstown College.
We have owned the Sharpsburg Cottage since 2000. It's our favorite place to spend time as a family. We love hanging out in the yard with our two dogs, Paisley (Golden Retriever) and Willow (Yellow Lab). They love swimming in the River and walking along the Tow Path. The most relaxing time is soaking in the hot tub on the large deck overlooking the yard! Its something you have to experience.
Catherine and David purchased this cottage in 2000
It is only 1 hr 15 minutes from Washington DC. It is a great get away from the hustle and bustle. You can truly relax here at the cottage. Take a nap on the hammock or unwind in the hot tub.
We fell in love with this property because of its location. The C&O Canal Tow Path is located just beyond our front yard. We spend time walking and biking along the path during our visits to the house. There is a small country store two doors down where you can walk and get ice cream. One of the first things we do is walk down to the river and take a dip. We are five minutes from Antietam and close to many other local attractions. We would spend every weekend in the country if we could. The cottage is fully equipped as if it were are primary residence. Our lives have become very busy so we don't get to spend as much time there as we would like, so we have decided to share our wonderful home with others. ENJOY!!
Enjoyed our stay! Everything you need for a family getaway: clean linens, nice sized kitchen and living room, bikes to borrow and family-friendly collection of video tapes. Cozy and clean!
My husband and I visited the cottage in Sharpsburg in October, 2017. We loved our stay!!!! The cottage is spacious and we enjoyed sitting on the deck breathing in the fresh Fall air. We also discovered a lovely restaurant and Tap house in Boonesboro called "Dan's" where the portions were HUGE and the food was delicious. We walked the C&O canal for a lovely hike. We also went to the Hagerstown outlets which are a 1/2 hour away and got some good deals. Plus, it isn't crowded there, which is a big plus. We saw deer and also lots of birds. Can't wait to go back!! The owners take good care of the property and the house was in pristine condition when we arrived.
The Sharpsburg Cottage was a wonderful staging point for our trip to the battlefield, Shepherdstown and Harper's Ferry. The house and property were secluded and it was a joy to stay there!
We spent a week here with our 1 and 3 year olds. It was very comfortable, relaxing and fun. The layout worked very well for little kids. It was wonderfully quiet and just an easy vacation. We hiked and biked and swam in the Potomac. We enjoyed Shepherdstown and the bakery in Sharpsburg. We walked over to Barron's for ice-cream. We were glad that we had seen in the reviews that cell reception is just about non-existent, so we came prepared for being without cell service. There is a landline in the cottage that we shared with our emergency contacts...and that was a relief actually.
We enjoyed our time here very much. Wonderful to be right by the river. My kids kayaked and and we all biked along the tow path. I liked not having to drive somewhere for entertainment -- the outdoor activities were all right across the street! But it was also lovely to be so close to Antietam and Harpers Ferry, both of which were great afternoon trips for my history-buff children. The cottage is very pretty and clean, and we were all comfortable. Had everything we needed. We also much appreciated the movie collection and the book selections for when we had a rainy day. And we all LOVED the hot tub! My kids are already asking when they can return. Thanks for the perfect vacation.
The property was clean and was close proximity to many activities/towns even though it is in a wooded setting. We enjoyed visiting the Antietam Battle Field, Hagerstown outlets, dining in Shepardstown & Frederick, and visiting D.C. It has the feeling of an old family hunting cabin and could certainly use some updates. The upstairs beds were not comfortable and sank down in the middle. There is no wifi making it difficult to plan and research for nearby restaurants/activities although the owner has put together a nice binder with some information.
Bike on the C&O Canal Towpath, canoe/kayak on the Potomac River, Visit the Antietam Battlefield, visit the Charlestown Races and slots (15-20 mintues), Appalacian Trail, Shephardstown, WVa., Harpersferry, Crystal Grottos Caverns, fine dinning, shopping and much more....
