I am a contractor who specializes in restoration of historic homes in Washington, D.C. My wife and I have lived since the late 1990s in a 1876 Victorian home in LeDroit Park that I spent almost ten years restoring.
Deborah Knorr purchased this townhome in 1999
This is a unique area of Washington, D.C. with great history and architecture. We have enjoyed meeting vistors from around the world in the year that we have offered the townhome as a vacation rental.
This is a beautiful property, which I cannot recommend highly enough. We were 7 in our party, so were very comfortable spread over the 4 bedrooms. I think it would be crowded with 14 though. The house was clean and tidy and all the furnishings and equipment are of the highest quality. Patrick, the landlord, was very friendly and helpful. Although on one occassion we were warned at the metro that the area was not safe to walk around at night, we felt perfectly safe walking to and from the metro, though we did not do this late at night. It is a short metro ride to the centre of Washington. Highly recommend hiring bikes from Thomson boat and cycle hire as a way of seeing the main sights. Do not bother with the Double Decker bus tours - they do not run frequently or regularly, nor do they keep to their scheduled route and stops. A complete waste of money and a precious days sight-seeing.
This was a great home for my family of 8 for our week-long visit to DC. The neighborhood is lovely. The home is only a 10 minute walk to the Metro station with easy access to all of the major attractions. The home was roomy enough for all of us to have space. We especially enjoyed sitting on the back patio when the weather was nice. It was quiet with plenty of seating for all of us. The master suite is quite large. There are two additional smaller bedrooms with queen beds and ample closets on the upper level, with a shared bathroom. The basement level is all open, with a king sized bed, a futon double bed and an L-shaped couch. It was fine for my 3 teen-aged sons but not very private. There is a small TV and DVD player in the basement so for movies we had to invade "their" space. The main floor includes a comfortable sitting room and a sizable dining room with a large dining table with ample space for the 8 of us. The kitchen is adequate with a large refrigerator but not much pantry space for other groceries unless you're really tall. The kitchen cooking equipment was okay - the knives need sharpening, there isn't much baking equipment, and the oven needs calibration. There were plenty of dishes and silverware but only one wine glass and one champagne flute. The toaster and coffee maker were of good quality. Overall the house has a lovely charm and character and we found it warm and welcoming. The negatives we would report are all fixable: several burned out light bulbs throughout the house and some of the furniture - particularly the dining room table and some chairs - were rickety and need repair. We found the house to be fairly clean on our arrival except for candy wrappers behind a bed and a previous occupant's dirty laundry in a bedroom closet. Finally, we were unclear if someone was to meet us at the property on our arrival. We were given a number to call when we were heading toward the property. We called and she didn't answer but then she called back about 45 minutes later and said she would meet us there but she never showed up. While we ultimately didn't need her to show us around the property and guide us through how things worked we were under the impression that she would be meeting us there. Overall we enjoyed our stay and would definitely rent this property again.
The house fit our needs. It was big and nicely restored. It was also in the neighborhood we wished to stay in. However, attention to details was needed. There were no TV instructions (I was in the area before so understood it was rather complicated ), two TVs had very poor picture quality (the other two were fine) the bath soaps were little ones you find in cheap hotels, the newel post on the banister and one of the dining room needed glue, no shampoo, no replacement sheets, no garbage bags, only one key for 6-8 people, and a lamp in the living room was broken.
We enjoyed our stay. With a little work they could charge more.
Our family had a great time in the house. It is a wonderful old house which has been kept up and it is clean. It is close to the subway. The house is located in a safe community. We would rent here again. We recommend this house with no reservations.
Had a terrific experience at this property. There were 11 of us in total and we had plenty of space. Location was great - close to downtown but also close to subway, and there were plenty of local amenities. House was tidy and clean, service was great, and overall we had a brilliant time!
Wonderful! Close to everything and very comfortable! All the luxuries of home. Large home only 10 minute walk to the Metro and about a $10 cab ride to all the good stuff. Why stay in hotel when you can be comfortable and have extra leg room. We plan on staying here again!
