Enrique Guardia, PhD. Biochemistry and Nutrition, was born in Penonomé, Panamá. He is an affable gentleman who has traveled the world many times over and is married to the charming Karin Guardia, a beauty of U.S. and Swedish heritage. They bought property in Playa Blanca in Panamá in 1986, which became their home, after the couple decided to settle in Panamá for the reasons that Karin mentioned below. In 1991, the Guardias expanded their estate with the purchase of an additional front lot which was transformed by the family architects into a world class home where the couple now lives.
Karin is a retired teacher since 1995. She was born in Washington State, West Coast of the United States and recalled the challenges of raising the couple’s two children on two different continents, the cultural nuances of each country and her attraction to nature, flora and fauna.
Karin was asked what she liked about living in Panamá. She said she could not think of another place to live. She enjoys living by the ocean and being caressed by the ocean breezes, the climate is temperate, the location is away from the city, but close enough to the rural lifestyle, the sounds of the birds, the excellent medical services, abundant food, the ability to raise her parrots and chickens were things that endeared her to Panamá. When she leaves, she can only think about coming back soon. Karin keeps busy with gardening, tending her pets and as a language teacher, teaching Spanish and English for free. “English,” she said is “the language of choice today among Chinese, Finns and the world.”
With the downturn in business in 2007-2008, Mr. Guardia and his wife decided to turn Casa Guardia into a tourism product and that is when he turned for help to Alberto Quiros his nephew who is a lawyer and expert in the tourism industry. This decision requires a “large amount of money and a small army of people to maintain” said Mr. Guardia who believes “in improvement, not just taking care of Casa Guardia” so that the investment maintains itself. The house, picturesque and historic has a wine cellar, immaculately manicured gardens with special grottos for lovers to be alone.
The interior of Casa Guardia reveals fine workmanship of master architects. It is a cozy family home where peace and tranquility is a constant. The Guardia’s hideaway has been turned into an eco-luxury hotel, perched near the Pacific Ocean, the sea breezes and the tropical flora makes for a picture perfect ambiance. The hotel offers a full service package, for families who want an inter-generational experience where they can bring their extended family and occupy the entire house. It could be the venue for an entire wedding party or a movie set.
I asked Karin what do guests say when they visit Casa Guardia. She replied “It is the best vacation they ever had. It is very special, like a piece of heaven.” The reason guests enjoy the hotel is the ambiance; it is relaxing and private, which lends itself to reading a book, enjoying the beach, having quiet moments for meditation, or enjoying the wine selections (Enrique has a certificate in wine tasting). Karin offers a warm welcome to guests who would visit the isthmus: “to know yourself is to know Panamá, come soon!”
The Farallon area, is next to the Rio Hato airfield and the Decameron Hotel
