Gale owned a glass bottom boat when she first came to Kauai. As the business grew, activity desks were leased to ensure a steady flow of customers for the boat. When Gale had the second happiest day of her business life (she sold the boat), the desks remained and Gale was then in the activity desk business as Kauai Vacation Helpers.
She often jokes that one of the 'worst' parts of her job is having to test out all the activities to make sure they're o.k. for our guests. It also means she is able to share the knowledge of Kauai she's gained over the past twenty years helping our guests.
Herb's been in the residential real estate business since he first got his license in Huntington Beach, California. In 1993 Herb was recruited by a friend to work as Director of Marketing for a resort on Kauai, and has been here every since. Since leaving the resort Herb has been actively involved in Hideaway Cove doing marketing, designing websites for Hideaway Cove and Kauai Vacation Helpers, blogging and writing our newsletter 'FYI Kauai'. He also answers the phone, does basic maintenance and tinkers with the landscaping.
Herb purchased this cottage in 1999
We have both travelled extensively and talked about owning vacation rentals that had everything in them that we wished for in the places we've stayed. Most important to us was a very good bed with high quality linens and towels plus quality furnishings. We both enjoy cooking and wanted our kitchens to have granite counters for easy cleaning and ceramic top stoves for the same reason. Jacuzzi or deep soak tubs and walk in showers and granite counters turn what would be ordinary baths into something extraordinary.
When Herb first moved to Kauai he rented what is now our Aloha Two Bedroom, Two Bath and became fast friends with the owners, Dick and Donna Page. And when they decided to sell the building next door, Herb was the first person they asked. Initially the building had long term rental tenants and we converted it into vacation rentals in 1999.
Due to the high cost of electricity, very few of the vacation rentals on Kauai are air conditioned. We decided to add air conditioning to stand out from the crowd. For the same reason, we added an office and large guest laundry rooms on property.
Having an office allows us to give our guests a very high level of service. We are also very attentive to even the smallest details, personally inspecting our units frequently for cleanliness and wear and tear. We constantly upgrade everything on property including barbecues, furniture, beds (two new king beds added recently) and kitchen appliances and 'tools'. We work very hard to provide a high quality guest experience which we believe is the key to our success and the reason our guests come back year after year.
The Hideaway Cove Villas are super great! the prices are, well... perhaps TOO low, but my new wife and I were grateful since we were doing a honeymoon on a shoe-string budget. They're close to the ocean only a block away on the south side of the island. (
The south (Poipu) is perfect for wonderful sunny days, and it makes such a perfect spot for traveling the entire island of Kauai. We spent at least three days traveling to the north and east sides for various activities, one in the west, and three in the south. The drives to any location were fairly short, and even if you hit traffic, I mean... it's Kauai, just enjoy the scenery!
Although we stayed in the Beachcomber (totally sweet, two person studio), we were lucky enough to get to see the Seabreeze, which was just gorgeous. The place has its own outdoor hot tub, beautiful materials (shoji screen doors, granite counter-tops, tile floors), great big couches, a flat screen TV you won't need, and a view of the ocean! We are already making plans to go there for our anniversary with our closest married friends next September.
Ask Gale anything, and she'll have the answer. Food, views, swells, etc., she'll point you in the right direction! I'd give it 6 out of 5 starts if I could just because they throw in fresh made juice that awaits your parched palate upon arrival. Great, great, great.
Tips: go see the lithified cliffs on the south shore, drive all the way to the pu'u o kila lookout (of Kalalau Valley) at the end of the Wiamea Canyon road (for one of the best views in the pacific), and take a Napali Coast Boat trip.
My family and I just spent a week in Kauai, and stayed in Herb and Gale's Royal Palm Villa. The unit is tucked in the back of the "Hideaway Cove" units, so it was slightly difficult to find at first, but gave my family a lot of privacy. I LOVE that this home had air conditioning. We stayed in Maui for a week in a beautiful home without air conditioning, and it was a terrible experience. The kitchen is fully stocked with cooking and dining accoutrements (my parents complained a little that there wasn't a rice cooker), and there is a laundry facility behind the unit. It is walking distance to Poipu Beach, however parking at the beach is not difficult at all. Gale was so helpful in helping me book a scuba and boat tour of the Na Pali coast (which I highly recommend...but definitely take your dramamine!). Overall, this was a wonderful experience. Thank you Herb and Gale for being such wonderful hosts.
We stayed with our extended family and had a wonderful time. Herb and Gale thought of everything to make our vacation absolutely perfect. We'll be back!
What a great vacation we had with our kids! The Seabreeze had everything we needed, from the hot tub to the barbecue on the deck. We especially enjoyed the beach chairs, beach towels and cooler and used them every day when we walked down to the beach. It’s so nice to have Poipu Beach so close, especially when you have two teenagers wondering what to do. Charlie’s surfing lessons that Gale arranged were so good, we had him come back a second day for stand up paddle board lessons. The kids are asking when we're going to go to Hideaway again.
hank you for a delightful stay during our recent trip to Poipu Beach. We loved the location so close to the beach. This was the perfect place for two couples to fully enjoy Kauai! We never tired of watching the sunsets from the hot tub and then barbecuing on the nearby gas grill for dinner. Gale was very helpful and saved us money by making reservations for our luau and helicopter. Her dinner recommendations were the best! We’re already planning a trip next year.
The property manager was very helpful.
The vacation rental was spotless.
I was very happy with the location.
I was very satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental.
Overall, I recommend this vacation rental.
We loved our stay at Hideaway Cove (Sea Breeze Villa). We have stayed at a number of resorts in Hawaii and this was the largest and most comfortable by far. We were impressed by the huge villa, the well-equipped kitchen, personal hot tub and general location in Poipu. The bedrooms and bathrooms were large and completely suited our needs. The AC in each of the bedrooms kept us all sufficiently cool (a real plus with the heat and humidity of Kauai). We looked forward to returning to our 'home' after a day of adventure on the island. Our adventures included Waimea Canyon, kayak trip on Wailua River and trek to the Secret Falls, hiking the Kalalau Trail to Hanapkapi'ai Beach (the view of the Na Pali Coast was breathtaking), Hanalei Bay, and body-surfing Brennecke Beach. Hideaway Cove is a 5 min walk to Brennecke Beach and Poipu Beach - we and the kids went swimming/body-surfing every day (and sometimes with the turtles!). We found restaurants that were kid friendly - Keoki's Paradise (the bar section), Pizzetta, Bubba's Burgers and Brennecke's Grill - all in Poipu; Kalypso restaurant in Hanalei. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Kauai, and absolutely recommend the Sea Breeze villa at Hideaway Cove!
Love love love this rental property and Herb and Gale! My friend and I came to Kauai to celebrate her birthday and we stayed in the Sea Breeze unit at Hideaway Cove. Herb and Gale are so lovely and have thought of everything to make your trip special. Communication was fast, transactions were easy, and directions were clear. When we arrived, we were delighted to find a warm welcome note and fresh squeezed juice in the fridge along with some chilled glasses. The suite actually appeared better than pictured and was clean and spacious. The kitchen was well stocked and everything was in working order. The jacuzzi was amazing! The best part about Hideaway Cove was that it felt like a home away from home. I can't wait to return!
Poipu Beach is a resort area with shopping, grocery stores and ten restaurants located within a mile of the property. The beach has twice been named the number one beach in the United States and is the only beach on the south shore of Kauai that is life guarded. This is also a great spot to take surfing and stand up paddle boarding lessons (SUP). You can picnic, swim, snorkel and sunbathe at the beach. We provide beach chairs, beach towels and a cooler for you to fully enjoy the beach.
The adjacent Poipu Beach Park offers covered picnic pavilions, barbecues, a play ground for children, beach showers, public bathrooms and lots of open grassy areas to sunbathe or picnic.
Brenneckes Beach is next to Poipu Beach and is widely considered the best boogie boarding beach on Kauai. We also rent boogie boards and snorkel gear and can have them waiting on your lanai when you arrive.
Other Activities: Helicopter adventures, ATVs, bicycle downhill, luaus, Napali sunset dinner cruises, snorkeling trips by boat and from shore, scuba diving from shore and by boat, snuba, rubber raft adventures into ocean caves, ocean kayaking, river kayaking, zip-lining, hiking, golfing, deep sea fishing, rainbow trout fishing, movie tours in an air conditioned bus to the sites of well known movies and guided tours of the island.
Golf: Poipu Bay Resort, former home of the PGA Grand Slam, is less than a 10 minute drive from the property. This is the golf course for the adjacent Grand Hyatt Resort. The course is beautifully designed with many of the holes on the ocean in Poipu. The clubhouse, which is located on the lake at the 18th hole, is a great place for lunch. At dinnertime the restaurant transforms itself into Yum Sa, a terrific Asian themed restaurant run by the Grand Hyatt. Kiahuna, Pua Kea, Waimea and the well known Prince Course in Princeville are not far away. Our concierge desk is happy to book tee times for you.
