About the property

Cabin, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, Hot tub, Record Player, Close to River (Sleeps 2)

The 'Bon Fir Cabin' is a beautifully restored 1930's cabin located in the foothills of Mount Hood. It is just 43 Miles from the Portland airport, less than a mile from the Mount Hood Wilderness Area, and a three minute walk from the Zig Zag River. The original native fir floors, cedar siding and vaulted ceiling throughout help it retain it's historic charm. The cabin is fully equipped with a modernized kitchen, cozy wood stove, a queen bed, and a four person hot tub. The Bon Fir sits on a large wooded lot with plenty of room to relax.

The cabin has only one bedroom with a queen bed. The bathroom has a full-size front loading washer and dryer, and an antique clawfoot tub with a shower. The four person jetted hot tub is built into the deck to soak your bones after a long day of fun.

About Martin

I was born in Oregon and I like all kinds of outdoor activities. I hike, bike, surf, run, rock climb, ski, fish, raft, and camp. I write and play music. Nothing is better than great friends, great beer, and great food. I live in Portland, Oregon. Other than managing cabins, I work full time as an electrical engineer at Intel designing the worlds most advanced computer chips. I'm involved in several community gardens in NE Portland.

Martin purchased this cabin in 2008

Why Martin chose Mount Hood

I bought this cabin because I wanted a place close to Mount Hood and I love the outdoors. As soon as I walked inside I fell in love. The dark wood paneling and the vaulted cedar ceilings give the cabin a beautiful historic feel. The deck is huge and the hot tub is a great bonus.

What makes this cabin unique

I like to get a fire blazing in the wood stove and play games with friends. The tall trees and large lot give a sense of space that contrasts with my otherwise urban life. I like to play old records on the record player.

Perfect cabin getaway with lots of outdoor activities to enjoy.

  • 4 of 5

We made many special memories during our trip. The cabin is secluded among large trees and the sound of the creek. Perfect way to enjoy nature and get away from it all.

Falling apart and in need of major repairs

  • 1 of 5

A short time before we were scheduled to arrive I received a message from the homeowner. He explained that we wouldn't be able to use the hot tub because the pump had broke 4 days earlier. He said he would give us a $200 credit or he would give us a full refund and we could find other place to stay. Knowing that I wasn't going to be able to find another cabin on such short notice I took the $200 credit. When we arrived at the cabin later that day I opened the door to find condensation inside on all the windows. I figured maybe it had just been closed up for awhile and needed to be aired out. I started opening windows and realized there are no screens so in airing out the place we also filled it full of bugs....oh well just bugs nothing too bad. The next morning I woke up to squirrels running around in the ceiling.....they've chewed there way through the flashing around the chimney and there is a small herd of them living in the ceiling. The picture shown in the add is not the current condition of the property. The roof is rotting because of the 4" of debris rotting on top of it due to lack of maintenance. Around the house the vegetation has grown up so much there is no airflow to allow any of the structure to dry. I spent 3 days at this cabin with a stuffy nose and minor headache........MOLD! I'd love to see an air quality test from inside this structure. Between the rodents feces in the ceiling and mold growing in the walls/roof I'm sure the tests would scare anyone. This place looks quaint in the pictures posted but is really just a dump.

Owner's Response: Hi Shawn, I'm sorry you didn't have a great experience. I do my best to keep the property in good shape. The hot tub is now fixed. Sometimes things break. I will check for the squirrels right away. I think a bathroom fan will help with the condensation. The original windows swing out when you open them, so I don't think screens would work. Usually I keep them open during the day and close them around dinner time. Also thanks for the idea of pruning back the vegetation around the house. Always good to have more airflow.

Perfect mini-vacation

  • 5 of 5

This cabin offered us everything we had hoped for. We soaked in the hot tub, drank whiskey front of the fire, and listened to several records. The kitchen provided us with all the amenities we needed to make a killer dinner. (The oil had run out though.) Hopefully we will return someday!

The Hype is Real - Bon Fir Cabin is awesome.

  • 5 of 5

We had a 1 night reservation for the Bon Fir Cabin and could not have been happier with our accommodations. This is a quaint, well maintained cabin with all the amenities that you would need for a single or multiple night excursion. Wood burning stove was awesome with wood provided and we backed that up with the individual room, in-wall heaters that were sufficient in keeping us cozy. Hot tub was in good shape and well used during our short stay. Strongly recommend this cabin for those that want a getaway with their +1. Although the original reservation was planned for just me an the wife, our child care support fell through for the weekend and we ended up bringing our kiddos (qty 2) who slept on an air mattress in the living room area. Not optimal but doable in this smallish but cozy 800 sq ft cabin.

Great rental and close to the resorts for skiing. Can't say enough good things about this place.

The cabin itself was nice, however the neighborhood was questionable.

  • 2 of 5

The neighbors dogs like to bark as soon as you exit the cabin, they also liked using our driveway as a restroom. The hot tub was not so private, the neighbors on the other side have a clear view and both times I used it I noticed them peeking out the window at me. The wood stove in the cabin was nice however there was only enough wood for one small fire. If I would have known I would have brought my own wood, the wood shed out back was empty.

Owner's Response: Hi Zach, I'm sorry about that. I will talk with the neighbors so those things won't happen again. The wood shed is normally full, but it's hard to get firewood delivered in winter/spring so we've been bringing wood over from my other cabin. We try to bring plenty over, but I'm sorry it wasn't enough this time. If any guests in the future have any issues, please TXT or email me and I will do my best to resolve them during your stay. Thanks, Martin

Beautiful location, pretty house

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at Bon Fir, but we only stayed 1 night so we didn't check out a lot of the house's features. Hot tub was great, but didn't stay warm for more than a few hours even after turning the temp up, we had to get out, cover it, and get back in later, but overall it was wonderful. The house is far enough away from the highway to avoid traffic noises. We would recommend it for sure.

Owner's Response: Hi Kevin, Thank you for your review! I'm sorry the hot tub wasn't hot enough. We changed the water the morning before you arrived and it takes a little while for it to get up to full temperature. Usually, if the water needs to be changed, we do it a full day before the next guest, but sometimes that's not possible. Next time it will be plenty hot for you. Sorry again for the inconvenience. Thanks, Martin
