About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 6)

Sideways is a RUSTIC, but quaint little 3 bedroom, 1 bath house right smack in the middle of campus (the University of the South campus, that is). It's a 115+ year old gem of a cottage whose poor old bones just aren't as straight as they once were.

That said, as of April 2018, it underwent a nice little renovation, so if you've stayed here before or saw previous reviews about crazy bright paint colors, you'll be pleasantly surprised! It no longer looks like a box of crayons exploded inside. The renovation included fresh paint inside & out, a new tin roof, removal of the vinyl siding outside to go back to the original wood siding, updated light fixtures, a new deck, a new driveway, new operable windows with screens throughout, and a new sliding glass door and glass top front door that both help to let in a lot more natural light.

While a bit crooked it may be, it definitely won't let you down when it comes to offering you relaxation on a budget and a great location to reconnect with alumni and friends! It's located within walking distance to the local coffee shop (Stirling's) and the local bar (Shenanigan's, which added a 2nd story balcony in 2018), as well as countless hiking trails, golf course, tennis courts, lakes for fishing, and just about every University building.

It is NOT the Hilton. This is an OLD house that is used as a vacation home on available weekends by the owners and their families (all Sewanee grads) and looks more like a casual old vacation cabin than a fancy bed and breakfast, so please set your expectations accordingly. It has a Washer & Dryer, a great set of porches (one covered porch, one uncovered deck), and a hammock you can hang to fall asleep under the pine trees.

There is NO CABLE and the TV signals DO NOT REACH inside the house (we've tried rabbit ears, digital converter boxes, and fancy expensive solutions that don't work). There is a DVD Player, but you will not be able to watch live TV, so plan to watch any sports games from Shenanigan's, Blue Chair or the Sewanee Inn. There is also no WIFI in the house (our goal with the house is to get away it all, especially the screens, so hopefully that's what you like about Sewanee also).

Sideways in a WOODED area, so while it will be clean and fresh when you arrive thanks to a wonderful local resident who keeps it shiny, there is always a chance that a little bug or daddy long legs could wander in. If this kind of thing makes you queasy and sends you running to a therapist, then no hard feelings, but this probably isn't the house for you. You probably landed here because it was the least expensive option you saw, so know that there are plenty of other more expensive houses in the area on VRBO that will satisfy those with more of a Kardashian lifestyle. Don't get us wrong, Sideways is cute, adorable, and charming, it just ain't fancy. :)

Please EMAIL (don't call) for specific questions regarding renting. If we need to talk by phone, that's not a problem, but we will respond much faster by email (somebody helps us with that). Renting is allowed for University sponsored events only (if you have a question about that, just email us). Pricing is $250 per night with a 2-night minimum except during Commencement/Graduation each year. Due to the high demand, the rate for Commencement is $2100 flat rate for minimum 6 nights/7 days. We don't book more than 1 year out.

The property is located at 121 Palmetto Ave, Sewanee, TN 37375.

We look forward to letting you be a part of Sideways!

About Crystal Hutton, Scott Evans, & Zach Goodyear

Zach Goodyear and Scott Evans are business partners and at Parks Realty in Nashville, TN. Scott, Zach, and Zach's wife Martha all graduated from Sewanee and have owned the house together for many, many years.

Crystal Hutton, Scott Evans, & Zach Goodyear purchased this house in 2006

Why Crystal Hutton, Scott Evans, & Zach Goodyear chose Sewanee

You can't beat a week or weekend in Sewanee. You'll leave feeling stress free and ready to come back again soon! It's a good family getaway or a couples retreat. Again, it's not fancy, but it's a rustic cabin close to everything. That's why we love it.

What makes this house unique

Eating at Shenanigan's, Crust, Ivy Wild, and The Blue Chair. Hiking (the bookstore has a great book called 'Go Take A Hike' that is cheap and shows all of the great hikes in the area - pick up a copy when you're there!). If you're into high adventure, the Ocoee river is a decent drive, but doable. We don't rock climb, but for people who do there are apparently some good sites around. We don't have cable but do have some DVDs and a DVD player that likely works.

The owner’s description was spot on!

Great location with basic amenities.

5 minute walk to Stirling’s Coffee Shop and 10 minutes to Quad.

Would certainly consider renting again.

Clean and well situated

  • 5 of 5

Our stay on Palmetto Ave was perfect for us as a group of alumni looking to hang on the mountain for the weekend. Access was easy, the space was clean upon arrival, and the house itself is great. Would definitely recommend other alumni stay here.

Quaint, comfortable, nice location, easy to manage.

  • 5 of 5

Lovely small house located very near campus possible walking distance. House is small but there was more room than we expected. 3 spacious bedrooms plus 1 spacious bathroom. A nice small sitting area and expanded dining area to accommodate a small gathering of maybe 6-8 people for a meal. Nice front porch. Easy to manage accommodations with rental house staff. Thank you!

Quirky in the best of ways!

  • 5 of 5

The hilarious full-disclosure from the owners was spot on. Yes, the floor slants and the feel is rustic; however, it is very well appointed and incredibly comfortable and cozy.

I cooked dinner for my son and 7 of his friends and we had everything we needed to pull of four hours of eating and visiting.

The location is perfect - truly convenient to all things domain.

My only regret is that my son graduates in a few months - if only we’d found this gem of a home four years ago - we would have stayed here every visit!

Had a great time visiting with family and our son that goes to Sewanee.

Grilled out and hung out on the porches. Beds were comfy. They had everything we needed except tv for football.
