Hershey, Gettysburg, and the Dutch Country are at your fingertips, yet you'll enter your own private retreat in this comfortable home on a large corner lot with majestic oak, maple and dogwood trees in a peaceful neighborhood. You will be conveniently located to all the attractions of central Pennsylvania with Hershey thirty minutes to the east, Gettysburg 30 minutes to the west, and the Amish Country 45 minutes south of us. Ski Roundtop is a short nine miles from the house. There is easy access to PA and Interstate highways and the Pennsylvania Turnpike. You couldn’t find a better location for vacationing in our area in any season!

One outstanding feature is the spacious, privacy-fenced back yard with a large 16’ by 36’ in-ground pool with two fountains, a screened gazebo with dining table, ceiling fans, and lighting, plus a convenient pool house with an outdoor kitchen and a bath with a luxurious oversized tile shower. One extra nice feature is the large poolside deck, not often found in vacation rental homes. The pool opens in April, and it should be comfortable for swimming within a few weeks as our passive solar heat expedites the warming of the water. Until then, enjoy the relaxing sound of the fountains as you lounge by the pool and make s'mores in the chiminea. (Those daring enough to take a dip in early April are welcome to do so - it's been done many times!)

The 5+ bedroom home features a first floor, fully equipped tile kitchen with breakfast nook and GE Profile stainless steel appliances, including convection double oven, dishwasher, convection microwave, and large refrigerator with water and ice in the door. There is also a second full-size refrigerator in the three season outdoor kitchen so you never run out of refrigerator space.

Also on the first floor is the Southwest bedroom with a queen bed and direct access to a half bath (we call it the Palm room!) The bath can also be accessed from the foyer so that it can be shared.

The first floor L-shaped living/dining area has leather dining chairs and comfortable leather couch and chairs for viewing the Sony flatscreen HDTV. There's even an old Waltz family piano so that the kids can keep up with piano practice. (Sorry, kids!)

The second floor includes:

1. Master bedroom with a queen size bed, a desk, and a leather chair for viewing the 60' LED TV with sound bar.

2. Second bedroom with a queen bed,

3. Third bedroom with a double bed, a twin bed and a futon that can be used as a bed. It's as large as the master bedroom.

4. Optional bonus bath and bonus bedroom with queen bed. There is an extra fee for this addition, and it is required for groups with over 12 people including children. (The bonus bath is access through the third upstairs bedroom, and you go through the bonus bath to reach the bonus bedroom.)

In the basement, you'll find the large den/fifth bedroom combination with a queen size bed, leather couch and love seat, and a Pioneer Elite extra large flat screen HDTV and sound system. There is a half bath on this level. In addition, you’ll find a convenient laundry room with washer and dryer in another section of the basement, and we supply all the laundry products. Laundry chutes on the first and second floors send all the dirty laundry directly to the basement laundry room. You can play air hockey with the kids while the laundry is drying!

If you’re looking for good local eateries close to the house, walk to Deiner’s on Main Street for breakfast. It’s decorated with memorabilia from the local high school and a number of students work there. If you’re hungry for bagels, Ressler’s Bagels and Deli will hit the spot, a very short drive from the house. They were rated a perfect “10”, the best bagels in all of central Pennsylvania. Juice ‘N Java, in Windsor Park Shopping Center, five minutes from the house, is a great coffee shop with gourmet sandwiches, etc., free Wi-Fi and laptops provided. We enjoy the fabulous gyros, lamb dishes, chargrilled souvlaki, just everything at Hellenic Kouzina, a family run Greek restaurant with parents and sometimes all nine children pitching in. If you like, you can eat in the courtyard with stone fountain and hanging lights. All of the above restaurants are within five minutes or less from the house by car, and our area has lots of the major chain restaurants as well. There are two Giant Supermarkets within a five minute drive, and the upscale Wegman's Groceries with a gourmet selections of cheese, a Mediterranean bar, craft beer, great sushi, and an expansive hot and cold food bar with dining area is a short drive from the home.

Your Hosts: We take pride in providing our guests with a sparkling clean home that has been well cared for, and one that is furnished with many conveniences. You will find the house and grounds well maintained. We live in the area and will respond promptly to any need. We truly enjoy answering questions, making suggestions as requested, and helping to make your vacation in central Pennsylvania a very special one to remember.

About Janice

My husband, two children, and I have lived in Mechanicsburg, an historic village just across the Susquehanna River from Harrisburg, PA, for 28 years. For a number of those years, we lived in this home, where our children walked to the local schools, and Dave and I volunteered in numerous capacities in the community. Our children are now grown and live out of state, and Dave and I spend much of our time at our river cottage just about a 30 minute drive from the house. I enjoy gardening, and often I will be the person stopping by to water the flowers and potted palms and check on the pool during your stay. We will do our best to give you outstanding service because we truly consider you our 'guests' in every sense of the word. Dave is the executive director of a statewide organization, and I am a professor at our local community college. In a few years, we look forward to retiring, when we plan to spend spring, summer and fall in Pennsylvania and winters traveling or visiting grandchildren (when they arrive!)

Janice purchased this house in 2000

Why Janice chose Pennsylvania

We chose this property to live and raise our children because it is a safe area with good schools and convenient access to shopping and cultural attractions. We have easy access to major Interstate highways and the Pennsylvania Turnpike. With our son and daughter entering their teen years at the time, we also wanted a home that would be a 'teen magnet' to draw our children and their friends to our home to hang out. With the pool, outdoor kitchen and bath, and other outdoor amenities, as well as the layout of the house which is great for entertaining, our house became the home base for the track team, sleep overs, and pre-prom dinners poolside. The home was a favorite of the church youth group, and we enjoyed hosting cookouts and family reunions there as well. For the same reasons, we know our guests will find this home a wonderful base for a vacation in central Pennsylvania. The only 'drawback' you'll find is that you won't want to leave the house!

Amazing Rental with Amaxing Owners

  • 5 of 5

Well equipped and ready for a crowd, this rental had everything needed to make our stay one of the best. Location was key with Hershey 30 min., Lancaster 35 min. and Gettysburg 45 minutes away. 6 bedrooms and 3 full, 2 half baths gave our large group all the privacy needed. Beds were incredibly comfortable, nice living room as well as downstairs family room for kids and adults to spread out. Between the dining room table and kitchen table there was plenty of seating for meals. The extra fridge in the pool cabana was perfect for beer, wine, water and sodas. All appliances were in tip top shape and the Keurig made morning coffees for a large group super easy. Best bonus was the double washers and dryers! We had little ones so packing light is nearly impossible without laundry facilities. Kids thoroughly enjoyed the pool and the yard is absolutely lovely to relax in. Owners are meticulous about their lawn care and it certainly shows! Janice and Dave were wonderful hosts, easy to work and communicate with, and thoughtfully checked in with us each day to see if there was anything we needed. We've been renting with VRBO/Homeaway for the past 16 years and I can honestly say, without hesitation, this is one of the best rentals we've ever had!

Thank you, Janice and Dave, for making our vacation one to remember for years to come!

Wonderful experience and would love to come back!

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I would like to thank David and Janice Waltz for inviting us into their lovely home on South York Street. They made our stay at their home a wonderful experience and it is evident from the way that they maintain their home that they want their visitors to have the best time while there. What may be a small gesture to some, such as David and Janice driving thirty minutes to greet us after our long ride from NYC, meant a great deal to us. During our prior experiences renting homes, no other owners have traveled to give us tours of their homes and to do on-site inspections of their facilities. In another instance, two members of our group went to try out the air hockey table and it was not turning on properly; David ran to get his toolkit and fixed it just so we had the option of playing it. I could go on and on about the Waltz and their kindness, but I must save some room to discuss the home.

The house was very clean and accommodating. The bathrooms all had an array of toiletries for us to choose from such as shampoos, body washes, lotion, towels, etc. TVs throughout the house made it possible for us to all watch what we wanted without bumping heads. The beds were among the cleanest and coziest we have ever had in our experiences. The one thing we were unable to check out was their pool and that was because the weather did not permit. If David and Janice would have us, then we would love to return to their home during the summer.

We had a great Christmas vacation. Janice was a delight to work with. She went way beyond to help us with everything we needed to enjoy a great Christmas vacation with our family. The house was extremely nice and even decorated for us. We totally enjoyed our time there and would definitely go back. Thinking of a summer vacation also. Can't thank Janice enough for always being available to us a checking to see that we had everything we needed. Would definitely recommend this home to any family looking for a relaxing time together.

A weekend to remember

  • 4 of 5

My family and I loved the house. It's cozy and comfortable. It's a well maintained home, complete with all the amenities needed. The pool was well maintained. The water was perfect as well. Spacious backyard with a beautiful gazebo, perfect for dinners. Beds are comfortable and the bathrooms are immaculately clean. The location is nice. It's near the town, which would make it for the whole family to walk around and go sight seeing on the beautiful, rustic buildings of Mechanicsburg. It is near Hersey, which is convenient for chocolate lovers. We just loved staying in this house and actually planning another trip next year.

PERFECT GIRLS' WEEKEND

  • 5 of 5

This place was the perfect location for a girls' weekend to celebrate a milestone birthday. The house was immaculate and the grounds are very well-maintained. There is definitely pride in ownership. The backyard oasis was the perfect setting for relaxing and catching up. We enjoyed the gazebo, chimnea, and outdoor kitchen. The house had everything we needed and offered enough space for the twelve of us. Even the sheets were soft and comfy. Just like being at home. Janice was very quick to answer any questions and to make sure we had everything we needed for a wonderful stay, including shampoos and body wash. David made sure the grounds were perfect and the pool was spotless. We visited three wineries, the Saltfx Spa, and had dinner at Gabriella's Italian Ristorante. It was a wonderful weekend. We would love to go back again and would recommend this place to anyone.

The village of Mechanicsburg is 30 minutes from the Gettysburg battlefield and visitor center, less than 30 minutes from Hershey Park, 45 minutes from Lancaster County's Amish Country. These are all in different directions, so we are very centrally located. There is also a Civil War museum in Harrisburg, just across the river. Mechanicsburg got its name because that's where all the covered wagons stopped to be repaired and worked on after they crossed the Susquehanna River heading west. It has the distinction of being the point of northernmost penetration of the Confederate Army in the Civil War. Other area attractions include Indian Echo Caverns, Lake Tobias Wildlife Park (fabulous for children!), Dutch Wonderland, IMAX theater and Harsco Science Center, and outstanding outlet shopping in Lancaster, Gettysburg, and Hershey. Enjoy the Appalachian Trail and other great wilderness hiking/biking trails, fishing, kayaking and tubing on the Susquehanna River and Yellow Breeches Creek minutes away.
