About Kathleen Burwell

My name is Kathleen Burwell; my husband's name is John. John was born and raised in Redding. I moved to Redding with my parents and siblings in 1966. I retired from teaching in 2010 after 37 years. John is a retired general contractor. We have no children but do have several nieces and nephews, and always at least two dogs.

Kathleen Burwell purchased this house in 1973

Why Kathleen Burwell chose Shasta Cascade

My parents bought the property where Battle Creek Retreat stands in 1973. They began building the house in 1976 and completed it in 1977. My mother died in 2000, my father in 2001. The house was left in a trust for nine family members. In 2008 we turned it into a vacation rental. In December of 2013 John and I purchased it from the rest of the family. It has become a fulfilling retirement project.

What makes this house unique

The beauty of the mountains can be found in the many lakes, streams, and forests. The elevation is about 4000 feet, so in a typical year, there is snow in the winter time, allowing for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and sledding. In the summer time, the main draw is Lassen Volcanic National Park. There are several points of interest within an hour's drive of Battle Creek Retreat. The springtime is beautiful with the redbud and dogwood in bloom. The fall is equally as beautiful with the many leaves of brilliant color.

Our property provides activities within a short walk. Battle Creek runs along one border of our property. In fact, our property goes to the middle of the creek. Kids and dogs alike love to play in the creek. Lake McCumber is within walking distance. There are several logging trails where guests can walk their dogs, although no motorized vehicles are allowed.

On the back patio there is a gazebo, a firepit, a picnic table, and a lot of seating. It is enclosed to give it a feel of complete privacy, although a lack of privacy is certainly not an issue at Battle Creek Retreat.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thanks a lot for the wonderful welcome. The kids and us had a great time and really enjoyed the evening smors by the fire. we are hoping to come back soon and enjoy the cabin and the surrounding scenery.

It is our second time in your cabin and we again had a wonderful time. The kids had a blast and they loved Rebel's Retreat (bunkhouse). We hope to be back soon.

Clean, Homey, Had Everything you could need...striking distance to Lassen

  • 5 of 5

This well built and well maintained property has everything you could possibly need to get away and journey into the Lassen National Forest and Park. Explore the forest, reconnect with your family or stay in and write the great American novel...with cable and wifi.

Owner's Response: Matthew, thank you for your well-written review. Who would have thought that the road through Lassen Park would still be closed at this late date due to snow! I hope you were able to experience Loomis Museum and other areas of Lassen that were accessible. I'm glad that you and your family were able to enjoy Battle Creek Retreat and the natural attractions within an easy drive from BCR.

Great experience

  • 5 of 5

Battle Creek Retreat is a wonderful place to stay - very quiet and peaceful, great outdoor spaces, and good proximity to Lassen. The owners go 'above and beyond' in providing amenities for guests. I would definitely rent again if in this area!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review, Rebecca. I wish I could have done something about the heatwave! It's fortunate that you were able to spend time at a higher elevation in Lassen Park; the road had just opened all the way through to the other end (a very late opening due to the large amount of snow). We so appreciated you leaving the place in such great condition. Thank you for that. I'm glad you were able to enjoy our beautiful part of the state! Kathy

The property was expansive, completely fenced, and clean. Outdoor areas were set up for relaxation. The inside of the house was clean and comfortable. You can't beat the location. The creek is lovely and the easy access too Lassen and the surrounding area made our stay fabulous. It was nice that the property is pet friendly so our dogs could enjoy a vacation as well. The host clearly has comfort in mind as the house is set up perfectly for guests. My children loved the toy room and were fascinated by the outdoor bunk house. I would highly recommend this place to anyone. Thanks for a great vacation!

Owner's Response: I'm thrilled that you and your family found Battle Creek Retreat so accommodating, Pamela. Our family has wonderful memories spent in the mountains with my parents. The creek, the trees, the beautiful night sky, the relaxing scent were all factors in Battle Creek Retreat being built in the 70's. There are so many places to see and things to do within reasonable distance. I hope you and your children have lasting memories of your trip to Lassen Park and your stay at Battle Creek Retreat. Thank you for your descriptive review. Kathy

Owner's Response: What a great guest you were! There were very few signs you were even at BCR! I know your stay was short but I'm glad you were able to spend a day at Lassen Park. The road just opened up all the way through - so much snow during the winter and spring. Thank you for your review. You are welcome back anytime should you get to our part of the country again. Regards, Kathy

We just enjoyed five nights in this cabin.

We spent most of our time exploring the area. Lake Britton, Burney Falls State Park, Hat Creek, Lassen National Park etc. We hiked, kayaked, tubed, fished, and enjoyed learning about the area. We were disappointed that the road through Lassen was still not open but with the amount of snow we had this winter it was understandable.

Battle Creek Retreat was perfect for our needs. The house had everything we needed and more. The property was expansive with many seating areas. It was nice to learn about the history of the cabin and that of the family that owns it. You can see how much they loved this place and obviously have so many wonderful memories here. It is wonderful that they allow others to share in those memories, while creating memories of our own.

Thank you Kathy for the hospitality and for the many personal touches provided.

Owner's Response: Michael, you covered a lot of ground during your stay! I love it when guests explore and experience the unique features of the area. You're providing the kind of childhood for your children that my parents did for my siblings and me. I'm glad I had the opportunity to meet you and your family. That rarely happens. I love the hearts that were chalked on the tree stumps, which I'm assuming your daughter did. I can't thank you enough for treating the house as your own, leaving it so clean, and for going beyond what is asked of our guests. If you visit the area again, you would certainly be welcome. Maybe next time, the road through Lassen Park will be open (it's suppose to reopen next week; SO much snow through late spring). Thanks again, Mike!

Perfect mountain retreat

  • 5 of 5

This charming house in the woods is beautifully equipped and was very comfortable for our group of 4 friends. We spent two days walking in Lassen National Park and the third visiting the surprisingly good wineries 10 miles away in Manton. Deer visited the yard in the mornings. Evenings were spent barbecuing under the stars at the outdoor tables, enjoying the sounds of the creek below the house. Lassen was uncrowded, beautiful and its geological history was amazing. Local shopping in Shingletown was basic but sufficient for extra items to add to groceries bought in Reno en route to the house. Highly recommended!

Owner's Response: Thank you, Janet! I'm glad you were able to enjoy your stay. Lassen Volcanic National Park is a huge draw to our area but not many of our guests visit the Manton wineries. When I have a girls' weekend at BCR we always go to the Forward Rd. wineries - they're all different and the owners of each one are wonderful. The deer have been abundant the last couple of years. I see they enjoy my geraniums and dogwood! It's fun to observe the wildlife. That and the sound of the rushing creek and the clearness of the night sky make for a real forest experience. I love it!
