About Randy & Cathy Teinert

My wife and I moved to Minnesota in 1992, continued growing our family to 3 hard working boys that will someday take care of this place.

Randy & Cathy Teinert purchased this cabin in 2001

Why Randy & Cathy Teinert chose Minnesota

While on vacation to Lake Kabatogama we fell in love with the area, found a property that had been for sale for over 10 years, bought and started building our dream vacation home.

This is a guest house next to the main cabin, built to share with our friends and guest to enjoy as much as we have.

What makes this cabin unique

Lots of room with river and lake view from every window, very private.

Could have been better

  • 3 of 5

Me and my family came from Chicago for a week get away. The stay wasn't bad but we just couldn't sleep due to the loud train. The cabin was filthy, a lot of spider webs and flies. Windows were covered with webs and dirt. Shower was another issue, we couldn't control hot and cold temperature. It was a very nice view though and very nice owners. It was quite a far drive for hiking and doing outdoors stuff. I liked that we had washing machines and could use them. Upstairs was getting really hot. The main bed was very uncomfortable, we didnt sleep a bit. It was super soft and you could tell, very old. Overall, an ok stay but we hoped for better.

Beautiful place

  • 3 of 5

The cabin was great. Very cute place and very clean. The lake is also nice; very calm and very few boaters. Everything is provided as mentioned in earlier posts. The location is great next to Voyagers park and International Falls. The place would have been perfect except for a few issues. The train horn is actually very loud at night. We had a hard time sleeping. Be sure to use earplugs. Also, the beds are all upstairs - very cut loft area, but it is hot. They have an air conditioning unit which helps immensely, but it is loud and seems to need to be run all night to keep it cool enough to sleep. Finally the shower is a bit of a problem as mentioned in earlier posts. It is either cold or very hot. We could not find the middle ground. We still enjoyed ourselves and didn't let the few issues ruin our time as everything else was wonderful.

Almost Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

This was one of the best up N experiences my children and I have had. Randy is a gentlemen and very accommodating. The cabin was clean, the fishing was great, both rented boats ran great and everything in and out of the cabin functioned as it should. With the exception of the gas grill, just didn't get hot enough to GRILL anything, not even asparagus. Also it would have been nice if either one of the boats we had rented had an anchor.

The loons!!

  • 4 of 5

Our stay at Randy's Ash Lake cabin exceeded expectations. It's nature's beauty and peace packaged with modern conveniences of home. We thoroughly enjoyed the pontoon boat and Randy's attention to his guests rivals any 5 star.

Beautiful cabin on quiet lake

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the Ash Lake cabin! The cabin itself is gorgeous. Absolutely everything you need is there, from comfy furnishings, a washer and drier, all the pots, pans, bowls, utensils and even Tupperware that you could possibly need. We spent many days fishing and caught a lot of small mouth bass, pan fish and perch. The lawn is perfectly manicured and we played a lot of yard games during the day and enjoyed the abundance of stars in the evening. We took a couple of day trips to Voyageurs National Park, visiting both the Ash River Visitor center (on Kabetogama) and the Rainy Lake Visitors center. Both are a short drive from the cabin and well worth the visit. Loved all the pelicans on Ash lake, something we don't get to see every day! The trains definitely make their presence known, but as another commented, you kinda get used to it. We met the owner, Randy, on our last night. He was very nice and accommodating. All and all it is a beautiful cabin on a quiet lake with a great location!

Property was amazing!

  • 5 of 5

This trip was everything we were looking for.

Location - about 15 minutes away from a very small town, the cabin is situated on a beautiful private lake, surrounded by woods.

Cabin - it was really great. Plenty of room, kitchen supplies, towels....really just about everything. Satellite TV helped out on a couple bad weather days. Lots of room for a large family to have their own sleeping spots. Our dog loved the grounds... Plenty of room to run and play fetch.

Some comments about the shower... I didn't feel like it was as horrible as some others have reviewed. Yes, the water pressure isn't like home. Yes, the hot water "sweet spot" is tough to find (although I did). It's a small thing, and not a big deal at all.

We stopped at a local grocery store and bought food for the week. Just plan ahead and you'll be fine. Gas grill on the deck worked great and kitchen has all the pots / pans you'll need.

Lake - my daughter (11 yrs) had never been fishing. Within 2 minutes of her line being in the water she was getting bites... She was literally hooked at that point. My kids loved the fishing. We rented both the pontoon and the fishing boat and both were a lot of fun.

Lots of reviews about the train noise. Yes, property is close to train tracks and yes, you will hear at all different hours. But like some others have mentioned, after a while you don't even notice it anymore.

The owners were not there the first half of our 6 day stay, but came the last couple days. They were very nice and accommodating. Great people!

In summary, highly recommended if you are looking for a remote area with great fishing and a well equipped cabin. We will definitely be going back!
