Three-story Guest House with Flexible Spaces

Bedrooms 2
Property type house

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 10-13)

Hill House is a nicely appointed, welcoming space nestled into a hillside at Happiness Hills Farm, an 80 acre farm and retreat center bordering the extensive Berea College Forest. It's an ideal place for reunions, retreats, meetings, visiting sites in Kentucky, exploring Appalachian crafts, hiking or just enjoying a vacation away from things. Peace and connectedness reign here at Happiness Hills, which is more than a farm - it is a place of blessing and refreshment.

Berea College maintains hiking trails on Indian Fort Mountain, including West Pinnacle and East Pinnacle. The farm includes a lake which was developed for flood control purposes and fishing is allowed for guests. Deer, geese and wild turkey are seen, as well as other birds and wildlife. The farm is easily accessible from Highway US 421, just across from Pilot Knob near Big Hill, KY and close to Berea and Richmond. Berea is the folk arts capital of Kentucky and many craft shops are nearby, as well as several craft fairs each year.

The Hill House second floor unit has two bedrooms with 1 bath, kitchen, spacious living and dining areas and can sleep up to 7 people. An upstairs dormitory with an additional bath adds beds for up to 6 more. A ground floor unit (additional charges apply - not listed here) adds an additional bedroom, two baths, kitchen and gathering room. Up to 7 can sleep in the ground floor area. The second floor has a covered deck and ground floor has a covered porch.

A/C and heat are included, as well as a landline phone and free wifi. Most cell phones can get signal but some can't. The owners live right on the farm and are accessible for emergencies and other needs.

Hill House is next to a large, beautifully remodeled tobacco barn and a lovely indoor assembly hall, both of which are available separately for gatherings and activities. An outdoor campfire and picnic site is also available for all to use.

Owners, Alfredo & Jennifer Escobar and their daughters, Lydia and Isabel, love to interact with guests. Alfredo is a visual artist and Jennifer is a musician and dancer. Alfredo's murals and other paintings can be seen in Berea and other cities throughout the eastern USA. Jennifer has recorded 10 albums, several of which can be found on iTunes, and she's involved with two student folk dance groups: The Berea Festival Dancers (of which Lydia and Isabel are members) and The Berea College Country Dancers. They're homeschoolers, and are often called upon to work as arts education consultants through state arts councils and the Kentucky Department of Education. On any given day you may find them doing schoolwork at home, working on the farm or buildings, or out and about in the world doing their arts thing and trying to make life fuller for everyone they meet.

Many Kentucky attractions are nearby or within a modest drive, including hiking trails to East and West Pinnacle on Indian Fort Mountain, Berea College, Old Town Berea, Kentucky Folk Arts Center at Berea, Berea College Square, Tater Knob Pottery and Bybee Pottery, Renfro Valley and Kentucky Music Hall of Fame, Kentucky Horse Park, Shakertown, Constitution Square in Danville, My Old Kentucky Home in Bardstown, Boonesboro State Park, Daniel Boone Forest, Natural Bridge State Park, Red River Gorge, Lake Cumberland, Cumberland Falls, Levi Jackson State Park at London, and many other sites. For a list of area activities contact Berea Tourism or Kentucky Tourism.

A website for Happiness Hills Farm provides more information about the site, surroundings and retreats, reunions and other gatherings.

About Jennifer

Jennifer, Isabel, Alfredo and Lydia Escobar own the property and live onsite, in a house they designed and built together. Jennifer's parents, Bill and Rose Ramsay, founded Happiness Hills as a continuation of their legacy of Christian hospitality, and the Escobars are honored to be the second and third generations in leadership. Jennifer is a professional in the performing arts, with ten recordings (available on iTunes) and a concert career that spans over two decades. She is also the Director of the Berea Festival Dancers, a teen folk dance group founded in 1984, and an instructor for the Berea College Country Dancers. Alfredo is a professional artist, specializing in indoor and outdoor murals, vivid acrylics, and intensely detailed graphite portraits. They homeschool Lydia and Isabel, who help on the Farm and are involved in the Festival Dancers, as well as performing onstage with their mom.

Also in residence at Happiness Hills are Shadow, a shy black Labrador, Pepito, a loving beagle mix, Smokey Joe and Martha, the barn cats, and a variety of chickens, overseen by the rooster, Wyatt Chirp.

Jennifer purchased this house in 2009

Why Jennifer chose Berea

The retreat center is on an 80 acre farm just down the road from founders Bill and Rose Ramsay's house. Their 6 children and 22 grandchildren have roots in Berea so they purchased it as a way to continue a family legacy of close relationships and hospitality in the context of God's creation.

Our prayer is that no one would come in and out of our gates without meeting God, in whatever way they need right then. This property has been a blessing to so many people, and it is our joy to be a part of that.

What makes this house unique

We enjoy being away from the hustle and bustle of today's life, but not so remote that convenience and communication are lost. We enjoy the beauty of the surrounding hills and streams and room for play, hikes, meditation and good fellowship.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Such a peaceful place, a great place for an author/wroter. Lovely sunrise coming up over the hills.

Not good

  • 1 of 5

Had high hopes for this based on reviews and photos. If I could have given less stars I would. The only positive thing I can say is they were friendly. Very dirty place. Sheets and blankets were covered in animal and human hair. It was no better the second night after they supposedly washed them either. So we left.

Owner's Response: It is disturbing to read this, and to have no recourse for the fact that it is completely false. This property was rented to another person during the dates you say you stayed here! I wonder if you are the person who booked a weeklong stay in another of our guest houses, and then left without warning and without paying,. Although your name here is different from the name that person gave me, your complaints are similar, baseless and untrue. We have never had another guest complain about the cleanliness of any of our guest houses. Normally I would be more diplomatic in my response, but your review is mean spirited and false and I will not dignify it with any response other than to call it what it is.

Peaceful family long weekend!!

  • 5 of 5

What can I say! We had such a great weekend. It's perfect if you need a place for a big family. There was plenty of room for eleven of us in the hill house! The 3rd room in the hill house has fans because the air doesn't quite make it cool enough, but it was very comfortable for the kids. It's a serene, peaceful it is perfect for family or couples. The college town is only about 10 minutes away. We went one night and had great pizza at a local place. Walmart was about 15 minutes away where we shopped for our groceries for the weekend. There is a General Dollar that is very close for anything you might have forgotten too. We spent a lot of time on the property, using the barn for a cook-out and the kids played with various outdoor toys. The boys walked to the pond and went fishing, ( it was a little farther than what we had expected ) but they said it was a great hike and the pond pictures are beautiful. The family provides, toilet paper, paper towels, dishwashing soap, and lots of misc. items that are already in the home. The Escobar family were more than accommodating, and even gave us FRESH brown eggs from their chickens for breakfast. It was a wonderful weekend for our family and we left with lots of memories and had lots of laughs. We would highly recommend to stay here.
