March 20, 2015: A wonderful repeat guest sent this note today and I had to post it:

"Can't wait to get there. For me, it's turned into a sanctuary of laughter and healing and friendship and...ugh. I just love it there. It's a very special place...." Shannon S. - Seattle.

It's perhaps the "ugh" in that statement that best describes our Fiddlehead. It's hard to describe. For each of us, it's different. Many guests over the years have commented on healing and others on strengthening bonds, themes that are beginning to resonate. We could all use a little time away be it alone, with friends or family. Fiddlehead is a sanctuary for all that makes each of us unique. Whether you are purple, green, white, black, a little blue, female, male, somewhere in between, gay, straight, young, middle-age, old or ancient, 1 leg or 4 paws, you are a part of the growing Fiddlehead family the moment you arrive.

Fiddlehead Cottage is named for the abundance of natural ferns in the gardens & woods surrounding the cottage. Though its architecture is a nod to the past, the owner's renovation opened the layout and refreshed the decor with contemporary furnishings. The home features sumptuous furniture by Ralph Lauren, Room & Board plus original works of art, books and a high end kitchen. The 2000 square foot home is tucked into the woods in Union Pier on a private cul-de-sac, minutes from beaches.

Equipped with the latest technology including WIFI, HDTV 46' Sony Bravia w/ Blu-Ray & Bose surround sound, premium cable channel lineup & DVD library.

A 5-minute walk to the bakery and shops in Union Pier, just a few more minutes walk to the beach (3/4 mile), close to wineries, great restaurants, and antique stores. Private, yet close to everything...

Cottage Features: The first floor features; a large screened-in porch, living room/dining room with fireplace and vaulted ceiling, two identically bedrooms (both with queen beds) and separate screened-in porch, a full bath and washer/dryer.

Nestled into the forest for privacy and seclusion, the luxurious hot tub has an easy lift cover, 45 therapy jets and your choice of underwater LED lights adjustable at the touch of a button. Seats 5-6 adults.

The second floor consists of a secluded master bedroom (king bed) with attached full bath (shower). The master has a separate terrace overlooking a mature forest - perfect for morning coffee.

Your vacation home is thoughtfully furnished with custom finishes and furnishings, thick towels, custom bedding and high thread count sheets. All interior lighting on dimmers creates the perfect mood.

More Cottage Features: This three bedroom cottage will comfortably accommodate a family of seven. But it’s also perfect for three couples traveling together, or as a romantic and extra-spacious getaway for two, or even one looking for solitude.

All this in a private forest setting amongst century old trees wildlife, a bubbling fountain and naturalized gardens. Quiet and secluded, yet minutes to local shops, the Red Arrow Roadhouse and much more.

The cottage is located on a private cul-de-sac lane on the east side of the Red Arrow Hwy. It offers privacy and seclusion in a safe environment away from busy roads and far from train lines.

About Paul Somers

Expatting for 12 years: Paris, Dublin, London and now Singapore. The cottage is filled with interesting things and certainly not cookie cutter. I am guessing you don't do cookie cutter either. :-) Fiddlehead is expertly watched over by Shannon and has been for the past eight years. In addition to property management, Shannon is the owner of Ranebow Hills Farm in Buchanan's gorgeous wine country about 15 minutes from Union Pier. She produces the most delicious organic eggs anywhere used in some of the finest restaurants and homes in the area.

Property not cleaned, owner very disrespectful.

  • 1 of 5

When we arrived in June, the house was dirty and all the beds were unmade and bathrooms unkept. I contacted the house manager and the property owner. Someone came to clean the home that evening. The owner and myself had agreed, through a series of text messages that he would refund me 50% off the first night stay. 2 weeks later I had not heard from him after several attempts to and had not received the refund. I then received a very inappropriate email:

"Dear ***,

I am rescinding the offer of a credit due to what I perceive as an illegal threat by you. In 11 years of renting the cottage, we have never encountered someone as unpleasant and caustic as you. You seem to looking to take advantage of any slight you perceive as an opportunity to profit through threats and intimidation.

After careful review and taking into account the amount of time I’ve had to devote to your threats you will receive a credit for the 3 hours the cleaning overlapped with your check in.

From the moment you set foot on the property you were searching for opportunities to recoup rental fees but remain on the property.

It comes as no surprise that you are threatening harm to the reputation of Fiddlehead Cottage and to me as well. It seems you would be the only person in 11 years of renting the cottage that had an issue with a stay.

I caution you on your threats of extortion and defamation in exchange for money. Blackmailing a property owner for a refund isn’t something I’ve experienced but it seems to be an ugly trend. I suggest you take your 3 hour credit and consider this case closed. We tried to make you happy but no one will likely be able to do that.

In other words, chill out Ms. ***.

I won’t mention the missing antique cache pot. It was a gift from my mother who passed away a few months ago after a battle with pancreatic cancer. If you happen to find that it made its way into someone’s luggage, mail it back, no questions asked."

I am so disappointed in this experience, it overshadows anything about the property itself. I would not stay here with this person as your owner!

Most private, quaint place you'll ever stay!

  • 5 of 5

My college girlfriends and I were planning a reunion and came across this gem of a cottage! Upon arrival we almost missed it, as it is set in the woods at the very end of a dead end street! Very private and beautifully decorated. We spent much of our time cooking together, chatting on the screened in porch, or at the beach, which is less than a mile away or a short drive. Paul and Shannon (who manages the property) were easy to work with and very responsive. We will definitely return someday!

Well appointed home on a wooded lot.

  • 5 of 5

This house exceeded our expectations with it's cleanliness and comfort. Tucked at the end of the street, it was secluded and quiet. We definitely felt transported. Almost all rooms have a door to the outside which makes it perfect for guest to take an early morning walk without disturbing the whole house. The screened in porch was perfect for early morning coffee and relaxing on rainy afternoons. The kitchen has almost every gadget you will need if you plan on cooking at home. If modern charm is what you are looking for this is definitely the house to choose.
