Overview

About the property

4 BR, 2 Bath - 2 Canoes & Firewood - 2-3 Night Min - Best for 8 guests - 10 max

The Big Pines Getaway is located on a small quiet lake in the wild heart of the Superior National Forest, only about 8 miles from the southern boundary of the B.W.C.A. A perfect place to commune with nature, reconnect with family and restore your spirit. The living area has a panoramic view of Lake Gegoka and the lake shore is just a short walk down the hill. If you are planning a wild party weekend, please seek different accommodations. Big red and white pines tower overhead, providing nesting habitat for eagles, osprey, owls and kestrels. This hand scribed full log house has a genuine 'Northwoods' feel. A fully vaulted main room overlooks Lake Gegoka, bringing the outdoors right in through a full wall of glass. The loft offers a special place for kids or adults to have their own space up in the treetops. Spectacular sunsets can be enjoyed from the living room, the deck or better yet a canoe. The Log Home is simply and comfortably furnished, with a modern kitchen and 2 bathrooms. A gas fireplace completes the rustic, relaxed atmosphere. We even throw in 2 CANOES and FIREWOOD. Silent recreation for all seasons at our gem in the forest.

If you are looking for a quiet, secluded wilderness escape, you have found it. Even with a very adequate public boat launch less than a minute away, there is no such thing as 'rush hour' on pristine Lake Gegoka. Speedboats, tubing and jet skis are definitely out of character here. This sparkling clean little 150 acre lake offers fishing, canoeing, swimming and just plain gazing out at. Our complimentary canoe provides a perfect way to explore the lake. The dock down at the shoreline is available to cast your line from or could accommodate your own small fishing boat launched from the public landing just around the corner. Lake Gegoka is a shallow sandy bottomed lake and warms up early in the summer. Just a few minutes away is a little used public swimming area on Flathorn Lake (connects to Gegoka). There is a very scenic hiking trail around it and a picnic area with water pump, grills, tables and a brand new vault toilet.

Lake Superior's North Shore is only about 30 minutes away and provides many opportunities for day trips, including Split Rock Lighthouse tours, the Superior Hiking Trail and some of Minnesota's most popular State Parks. It's a great place to cool down on a warm day inland and grab a bite to eat or a special souvenir. Ely is a 45 minute drive and has a variety of good restaurants and unique gift shops. This lively little town is the jumping off point for Boundary Waters Canoe Area trips and has some great attractions for rainy or sunny days. Both the International Wolf Center and the North American Bear Center are great places to learn about 2 of the areas wild residents. The Soudan Mine tour is a fascinating look back in time to 'hard rock' underground mining on the Range in the early 1900's.

About Andy Fisher

Love my job as a lodging host. I wear many hats and pretty much enjoy most of them (especially the bomber!)

Andy Fisher purchased this cabin in 2008

Why Andy Fisher chose Minnesota

Location, location, location. The woods and lake are beautiful and pristine!

What makes this cabin unique

We're easy to get to but far from the noise and lights. Lots of Minnesota's rare and shy wildlife hangs out right in the surrounding Superior National Forest. You can even see the stars (all of them!). Peace & quiet...

Guestbook comments from the manager

If you are looking for a remote, quiet and relaxing experience in the north woods, this is the place for you.  Our family of 8 was quite comfortable.  The main log cabin is exceptional, and the homemade log dining table, shelves, end tables, and dressers were quite unique.  It comfortably fit 6 of us and another couple stayed in the cottage.  The sauna was also a highlight, and we used the outdoor grilling area every day.  Also the outhouse was definitely a bonus!  Our granddaughter especially liked the loft as a play area!   Having a stockpile of cut wood was also a plus for the fire pit and we enjoyed several camp fires throughout the week.

There was a pair of loons on the lake and an osprey nesting in the trees.  Day trips were easily made to Lake Superior, Tettegouche and Split Rock.  We restocked supplies from the Finland Cooperative and our family had a good supper at Our Place.

This was a great place to disconnect.  There is wifi available but we didn’t hardly use it.  Cell service is very limited but that was OK too.  That’s what vacation is all about!  We were so disconnected that we didn’t even know that Andy had called us.  He visited us onsite and it was nice to chat and get some of the history of the place.

Fishing was just OK.  We caught one large bluegill (the biggest we’ve ever caught!) but only one.  We also caught a few large perch and a couple walleye, but never more than one per trip.  We’re not diehard fishermen either so we actually just enjoyed the lake and the quiet.  There is a nice dock at the water with a bench to sit and enjoy the lake.

The only downfall for us is the lack of beach, which we were aware of going in.  We took our granddaughter to the Flathorn Lake beach to play in the water and sand.

Thank you Andy and Lura

For those who enjoy nature and being close to it, this is the ideal getaway. In this remote corner of Superior National Forest, wildlife is abundant. Moose roam the area, and on occasion have been seen swimming in our lake. Timber wolves, pine martin, foxes, fishers and many other shy forest creatures are seen and heard. The surrounding area is very sparsely populated and offers many opportunities for exploring. The U.S. Forest Service maintains a number of hiking trails, picnic areas and public accesses to lakes large and small. Day trips to the B.W.C.A. wilderness are also an option.

Other Activities: shopping in Ely, kayaking, wildlife viewing, boating, cross country skiing, snowshoeing

Ski: Direct access to 30K of groomed, single tracked classic cross country ski trails. Flathorn/Gegoka trail system. No skijoring. Also designated snowshoe trails.

Wished we could have stayed longer

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at the Big Pines Getaway. The cabin was clean and well stocked. Andy answered questions quickly prior to our stay and provided excellent directions for our stay. We emailed him on one occasion during our stay and he was quick to respond. One small drawback was the swimming option. It is a very nice lake but it is not ideal in my opinion for little children to play and swim. The canoes were awesome and we enjoyed using the paddle boat. THANK YOU. I would definitely recommend this property to others.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much Roseanne. We really appreciate you staying with us and taking the time to review the Getaway. Sorry the swimming area didn't work out for your young ones. Hope to see you again sometime. Next time check out the Flathorn Rec Area for a little more child friendly swimming area. It's less than 5 minutes away and has picnic tables, a nice vault toilet and a beautiful hike around Flathorn Lake. Thanks again, Andy

Beautiful

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful and well-maintained lodge. Clean and comfortable, lovely deck for coffee in the mornings, canoes available for a paddle around the lake. Did not try the wood-fired sauna... next time, for sure.

Great experience for a big group-- will return!

  • 5 of 5

We were very fortunate to book this review for a last minute excursion. This cabin was utilized as a Northwoods pre-wedding getaway for a group of friends. It was secluded, quiet, and exactly what we all wanted. The cabin felt luxurious yet homey. We enjoyed the sauna and the canoes thoroughly! It was nice to have the kitchen primarily stocked with staples and kitchen supplies as well. We even saw the northern lights on Friday night! Could not have asked for a better place for me to celebrate my upcoming wedding! Thank you Andy for also being quick to respond to my request. Will definitely return!

Great cabin with everything you could need

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic stay in this property. We liked it so much we would've been happy to not leave the site all weekend.

We loved the deck, grill and fire pit.

The rowing boat/canoes/life jackets etc were perfect for us first time canoe-ers. It's a short stroll down the track to the lake (my two year old managed it fine, at least twice a day)

Would highly recommend.

Big Pines Getaway = Good time for all

  • 5 of 5

Our family just finished our three day stay at Big Pines. All listing information was correct and property was very clean and well maintained.

Plenty of room for everyone to enjoy the space. The peace and quiet was great. Canoe's, paddleboat and row boat were all used and kept us busy. Ely is a quick trip west and the bear and/or wolf center are great places to visit. Back towards highway 61 there are the many state parks and beautiful waterfalls and hiking trails. Views of Lake Superior are also fantastic.

Andy stopped by to be sure we were satisfied and that everything went well. He is more than accommodating.

Highly recommend you consider this property if you are headed up North.
