Big Pines Getaway - Log Cabin In Northern Minnesota's Superior National Forest

Photos and Description of this Isabella holiday cabin

4 BR, 2 Bath - 2 Canoes & Firewood - 2-3 Night Min - Best for 8 guests - 10 max

The Big Pines Getaway is located on a small quiet lake in the wild heart of the Superior National Forest, only about 8 miles from the southern boundary of the B.W.C.A. A perfect place to commune with nature, reconnect with family and restore your spirit. The living area has a panoramic view of Lake Gegoka and the lake shore is just a short walk down the hill. If you are planning a wild party weekend, please seek different accommodations. Big red and white pines tower overhead, providing nesting habitat for eagles, osprey, owls and kestrels. This hand scribed full log house has a genuine 'Northwoods' feel. A fully vaulted main room overlooks Lake Gegoka, bringing the outdoors right in through a full wall of glass. The loft offers a special place for kids or adults to have their own space up in the treetops. Spectacular sunsets can be enjoyed from the living room, the deck or better yet a canoe. The Log Home is simply and comfortably furnished, with a modern kitchen and 2 bathrooms. A gas fireplace completes the rustic, relaxed atmosphere. We even throw in 2 CANOES and FIREWOOD. Silent recreation for all seasons at our gem in the forest.

If you are looking for a quiet, secluded wilderness escape, you have found it. Even with a very adequate public boat launch less than a minute away, there is no such thing as 'rush hour' on pristine Lake Gegoka. Speedboats, tubing and jet skis are definitely out of character here. This sparkling clean little 150 acre lake offers fishing, canoeing, swimming and just plain gazing out at. Our complimentary canoe provides a perfect way to explore the lake. The dock down at the shoreline is available to cast your line from or could accommodate your own small fishing boat launched from the public landing just around the corner. Lake Gegoka is a shallow sandy bottomed lake and warms up early in the summer. Just a few minutes away is a little used public swimming area on Flathorn Lake (connects to Gegoka). There is a very scenic hiking trail around it and a picnic area with water pump, grills, tables and a brand new vault toilet.

Lake Superior's North Shore is only about 30 minutes away and provides many opportunities for day trips, including Split Rock Lighthouse tours, the Superior Hiking Trail and some of Minnesota's most popular State Parks. It's a great place to cool down on a warm day inland and grab a bite to eat or a special souvenir. Ely is a 45 minute drive and has a variety of good restaurants and unique gift shops. This lively little town is the jumping off point for Boundary Waters Canoe Area trips and has some great attractions for rainy or sunny days. Both the International Wolf Center and the North American Bear Center are great places to learn about 2 of the areas wild residents. The Soudan Mine tour is a fascinating look back in time to 'hard rock' underground mining on the Range in the early 1900's.

About Andy Fisher

Love my job as a lodging host. I wear many hats and pretty much enjoy most of them (especially the bomber!)

Andy Fisher purchased this cabin in 2008

Why Andy Fisher chose Minnesota

Location, location, location. The woods and lake are beautiful and pristine!

What makes this cabin unique

We're easy to get to but far from the noise and lights. Lots of Minnesota's rare and shy wildlife hangs out right in the surrounding Superior National Forest. You can even see the stars (all of them!). Peace & quiet...

Guestbook comments from the manager

Three generations stayed here over the last week. We were so impressed with the house and the management. We had a great time enjoying the lake, canoes and surrounding area. The firewood came in handy with our nightly s'mores. Thank you for a great week and some lasting memories! (From the Getaway Guest Book)

Great cabin with everything you could need

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic stay in this property. We liked it so much we would've been happy to not leave the site all weekend.

We loved the deck, grill and fire pit.

The rowing boat/canoes/life jackets etc were perfect for us first time canoe-ers. It's a short stroll down the track to the lake (my two year old managed it fine, at least twice a day)

Would highly recommend.

Big Pines Getaway = Good time for all

  • 5 of 5

Our family just finished our three day stay at Big Pines. All listing information was correct and property was very clean and well maintained.

Plenty of room for everyone to enjoy the space. The peace and quiet was great. Canoe's, paddleboat and row boat were all used and kept us busy. Ely is a quick trip west and the bear and/or wolf center are great places to visit. Back towards highway 61 there are the many state parks and beautiful waterfalls and hiking trails. Views of Lake Superior are also fantastic.

Andy stopped by to be sure we were satisfied and that everything went well. He is more than accommodating.

Highly recommend you consider this property if you are headed up North.

Peaceful getaway

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed a long weekend at Big Pines with another family. The cabin layout worked well with the size & ages of our group (young teenagers to adults), & the cabin description & photos were accurate. We enjoyed hiking near Lake Superior & also spent time at another nearby lake within the National Forest.

Andy was pleasant & great to work with, and he was quick to respond to any questions we had.

We have stayed at a number of VRBO rentals over the years, & we would recommend this property for a peaceful, "up north" getaway.

Beautiful Cabin!

  • 5 of 5

We just got done with a week say here at Big Pines and it was a beautiful experience. Our group had 8 people and two children and there was still plenty of room in the cabin, an entire empty bedroom actually - plus empty beds in each room. One of my favorite parts about this place was sitting out on the deck drinking coffee in the morning watching the fog dissipate and the sun rise over the lake.

While staying here, we spent a couple days in the BWCA and visited the towns along the North Shore. While closer to the BWCA than the shore, the location is still a great middle ground if you want an entire northern Minnesota experience (for reference, it's about 40 minutes from Ely and an hour and a half from Grand Marais).

While we didn't even use all of the available accommodations (we definitely would in the winter); having access to canoes, a row boat, sauna, and a hot tub is quite nice. The little lake is quite peaceful and beautiful in the morning and evening - like paddling out on glass. Being mid August and the lake being quite shallow, fishing was just ok, but there are plenty of other lakes around. Landed plenty of perch, bluegills, and a some pike just off the dock. Rumor has it there are some walleyes out there but they weren't biting.

I will say that you don't realize how close you are to other cabins until you pull in. Not that this is a bad thing, it was just a little shocking. While you're in the middle of the woods, you're in a little commune in the middle of the woods. The descriptions mentions other cabins, but it's hard to tell how close you actually are to others. Sometimes you'll go down to use the row boat and it will be out on the water already. With that being said, there are some perks to that like access to virtually unlimited cut firewood that is provided for all. That was definitely awesome. And if you like to meet people, all the better! During the week we only had one other family near us and then as the weekend approached more and more people rolled in.

Long story short, the cabin is spacious and beautiful. Andy is a great guy and a great host - he maintains the property beautifully and the accommodations are wonderful. I'd definitely come back here with a large group. Highly recommend!

Owner's Response: Wow! Thanks so much for taking the time to leave such a wonderful review. You even noticed a few of the "perks" that often get lost in the description of what's provided. Thanks again for staying at our Getaway. We would love to have you back again some day. -Andy

Heaven on Earth!

  • 5 of 5

When we pulled up to the home, walked out to the porch and saw the view we gasped! What an incredible view! What an incredible home!

This was the most serene place we have stayed in and we highly recommend it to anyone who wants a secluded, peaceful getaway.

We spent the weekend with another family and had such a great time-- we hiked, we fished, we canoed, we swam, we grilled, and we drank. And yes, being the Floridians we are, we even sparked up the gas fireplace in the evenings.

The cabin itself is so amazing-- it is a real log cabin with the perfect layout for multiple families to stay in. it is bright, very clean and well stocked for cooking and grilling. The lakeside spot has a perfect dock for fishing, canoeing, and swimming.

The surroundings are second to none. In the four days, we only saw one neighbor and only two people on canoes. The lake is gorgeous, especially at the break of dawn. You could hear tons of birds in the morning and wolves at night. It is the ultimate getaway into nature. Thoreau would be proud!

We highly recommend this to anyone who wants to be completely disconnected and immersed into nature!

We will find a way to get back here!!!!

Little piece of heaven

  • 5 of 5

After the hustle and bustle of Christmas, we wanted to get away from it all to enjoy the beauty of nature and some peace and quiet. The Big Pines Getaway was perfect! Nestled in the middle of the north woods, all we could see were snow covered trees as we sipped our morning coffee. We hiked a bit, played board games, and ventured down to the local tavern for a couple of beers. I would (and will) visit the Big Pines Getaway again!

For those who enjoy nature and being close to it, this is the ideal getaway. In this remote corner of Superior National Forest, wildlife is abundant. Moose roam the area, and on occasion have been seen swimming in our lake. Timber wolves, pine martin, foxes, fishers and many other shy forest creatures are seen and heard. The surrounding area is very sparsely populated and offers many opportunities for exploring. The U.S. Forest Service maintains a number of hiking trails, picnic areas and public accesses to lakes large and small. Day trips to the B.W.C.A. wilderness are also an option.

Other Activities: shopping in Ely, kayaking, wildlife viewing, boating, cross country skiing, snowshoeing

Ski: Direct access to 30K of groomed, single tracked classic cross country ski trails. Flathorn/Gegoka trail system. No skijoring. Also designated snowshoe trails.
