About Oliver Baun
I came across the Alpujarras by chance during my journey through Spain in the mid 80's. This was about the same time as the famous book writer Chris Stewart arrived into the area. Years later he published his bestseller ‘Driving Over Lemons: An Optimist in Andalucia (The Lemons Trilogy)’ where he tells all these funny tales and amazing experiences he had in this very region. I also discovered the same sort of authentic unspoiled paradise as he did. Back then, south of Granada was very different to what it is now. The area was impoverished, there were not many cars around but lots of donkeys instead, TV was a novelty and people actually 'lived' in the bars. There was no VAT tax yet and no motorway for hundreds of miles. Granada was a day's journey away and northern Europe a different planet. I was in heaven. I’ve been living in this area for almost 30 years and my children were born and grew up here. I absolutely love this region. Since then, I've been exploring the many things this area has to offer: hiking, skiing, cycling, snorkeling, biking, cooking, climbing and partying, of course.

A special place
We had a really enjoyable winter month in Orgiva (mid-Jan - mid-Feb). It is a good time of year for almond blossom. This was our second winter visit and it didn't disappoint. The views from the Cortijo are amazing - such a pleasure to sit out in the sunshine with a freshly-picked and squeezed orange juice listening to the birds and looking out on the mountains. Most days we were even able to have breakfast outside - a stark contrast to English winter weather. We only had rain on 5 of the 29 days (last visit we had no rain!). The Cortijo was comfortable and, with the aircon heater, log burner or a portable heater available, warm enough in the evenings. The Cortijo is quiet at night and we always slept well. There was plenty of hot water and we had no problems cooking or doing washing. What a luxury to hang washing out on the line late afternoon to dry! It was good to have Oliver and Maria around for advice or any help. Last visit we went to Granada - a doable day trip - except that we pre-booked the Alhambra and stayed two nights. This time, at Oliver's recommendation, we went to Cordoba. It would be a good place to visit at any time of year but there was plenty to see and not too busy in winter. We love walking and did some great walks , including one with Fritz (Oliver's father) above the clouds (!) above Capiliera. There is plenty of walking available and it is easy to download and follow routes. We ate well, with restaurants offering menu del dias for 10-15€ for 3 courses including drink. The highlight, though, has to be just being there - with the sunshine, orange trees, and yellow oxalis flowers set against the green grass and the mountains beyond.
Lovely, peaceful location
Lovely cottage with everything you need for your stay. So peaceful and just a 15 minute walk into the town. Beds were comfortable and everything was clean and tidy.
Quite difficult to find so we ended up calling Oliver who drove into town and we then followed him. The town has various one way systems so easy to get lost!
We would recommend eating at Limonera by the BP garage in town. Best meal we had!
Perfect villa in an idyllic setting
We stayed at Cortijo el Potro in the last week of the school summer holidays with our 9 year old twin daughters - and wow, what a fabulous holiday !
Booking was really straight forward and Oliver & Maria were really helpful in all communication ahead of our stay - they even arranged a car hire for us which was much better value than other companies.
On arrival Maria was there to show us around the property & we met the friendly dogs - Antonio & Pepa who became daily visitors :) The welcome basket of food & bottle of wine is excellent and, like everything about the property and the holiday, well thought through.
The house is beautifully done, very comfortable & cosy, GOOD air conditioning in the main bedroom & downstairs and is well equipped in all areas, especially the kitchen.
The beds are super comfortable..
(better than my bed at home!) & we all slept very well. Thoughtful touches throughout, good selection of books in many languages, family games, hairdryer, iron and a comprehensive and good property & local area guide compiled by Oliver & Maria.
The views & surrounding scenery are breathtaking & mesmerising, particularly at dawn and dusk.
The villa was perfectly located to visit the area so in our 8 days there we managed to see a fair bit. Highly recommend a visit to Granada , not just for the spectacular Alhambra but also for the entire beautiful city. We spent many hours just walking around soaking it all up- highlights were the Albaicín and Sacromonte areas and a highly recommended ice cream from Los Italianos!
Other trips to Bubión, Pampaneira & Capileira are a must, but also some of the coastal towns we really enjoyed - Almuñécar was a pleasant surprise after a really fun day at the Aqua Park. We also enjoyed an amazing tapas lunch at Arca de Noé in Lanjarón.
We had intended doing some walks/ hiking in the area but it was so hot we just spent the rest of the time relaxing by the lovely pool at the property.
We’ll just have to go back again to explore more on foot!
Overall a wonderful stay - thank you!
Perfect holiday accommodation
We had an amazing holiday in this lovely property just outside of Oriva. The attractive accommodation was very clean, comfortable and well equipped with everything we needed. We spent many hours by the pool enjoying the mountain views and the pool itself delightful. It’s just a 15 minute walk into the small town of Órgiva where there are shops bars and restaurants to enjoy. Oliver is very communicative and there is a good information pack to give ideas on where to visit. Beaches are only 40 mins away and the surrounding countryside is breathtaking. Malanga just 1.5 hours away and Granada 40mins. We will be back as it’s been one of the best holidays we’ve had and there’s so much more to explore.
great location, being the last house on the hill gives it a greater serenity, from the twittering of birds by day the frogs chatting at night to the odd thump of a orange dropping is bliss. An the local to the very colorful characters an great cafes in Orgiva is well worth the visit on market days, just to sit an ogle the locals over a splendid coffee or two is wonderful!
Good local shops great walks wonderful scenary, great owners, the welcome pack is a must, an the wee bodega at the house is so tempting, in fact i owe the owner a bottle had no change on leaving, but i will post him a surprise when i get home!
10/10 agreat place!
The place is very rustic, charming, incredible views and so quiet. It's very clean, the bed was comfortable. Having a fire place made it cozy in the evenings. Oliver was very easy to communicate with, Maria is a charming hostess. Fritz, Oliver's dad, met us in town, due to road construction we could not find our way. Last but not least, Pepa and Antonio, the 2 Andalucian Bodega rat dogs similar to Jack Russel terriers, came to visit several times a day, I guess having dog treats had something to do with it. This place is very easy to recommend.
Dear Rob and Beatrice,
We really appreciate that you have chosen our holiday home to spend big part of your long holidays in Europe with us and wanted to say thank you so much for your good rating and the nice and positive words in your review.
Also Fritz wants to send you his greetings and will miss you as good and funny hiking colleagues.
We hope to see you again one day in the future.
All the best to you,
Oliver & Maria
Cortijo El Potro is settled in a wide and green terraced land of 3.300sqm with lush garden, surrounded by pure and calm nature and the impressive wild landscapes of Sierra Nevada but just 1km away above the town Órgiva.
Although on the border of the cultivated land before it goes into the wild life, it has easy access by car and to town it only takes about 2 minutes to drive and 10 minutes to walk. The view over the village and the whole valley are wide and spectacular.
The closest town, Órgiva, is a very lively, southern Andalusian market-town, picturesquely situated in a large valley in the middle of a wild mountain landscape. Surrounded by rivers, olive and orange groves, it is not a tourist spot, rather a normal village which offers numerous street cafes, bars, restaurants, small shops, a weekly market, an old covert market with fish stalls but also small supermarkets, organic shops, banks, a post office and an emergency hospital.
Orgiva is located in the south-faced slopes of the amazing Sierra Nevada, just 30 minutes away from the beautiful beaches of the Costa Tropical and 45 minutes away from Granada.
Granada is situated just 50km away from the house. Its marvelous and indescribable beauty with breathtaking Moorish-medieval palaces of the Alhambra makes this city one of the true gems of Europe.
Only 7 km away is the traditional spa-town Lanjarón, with its ancient but recently renovated mineral baths offering various wellness services.
The region is characterised by its lush Mediterranean landscape with diverse and fertile vegetation, Europe's cleanest starry sky and over 300 days of sunshine a year.
Blessed with gorgeous weather all year round (including winter time), this region will give you an endless variety of activities and events and whatever the season is, the region remains lively and vibrant with enjoyable activities. All over the year and across the whole region (mountains and coast), restaurants, cafes and beach bars by the sea are open and will give you the chance to experience our gorgeous gastronomical culture and the Andalusian lifestyle.
The very high peaks of Sierra Nevada provide the region with fresh water, which finds its way by the ‘Acequias’ all along into the terraced fields. Acequias are ancient Moorish irrigation channels built into the rocks which cross the hilts all over the region. There are amazing opportunities to explore the stunning nature with pleasurable walks and hiking tours.
So there is Spain's largest ski resort and the one with the sunniest days all over Europe. It offers on an altitude between 2000m and 3400m over 120km of wide slopes. High snow, long and wide pistes, reasonable prices and a surprisingly comfortable atmosphere make Sierra Nevada an exceptional ski destination.
The privileged location of this property gives you the unique opportunity to choose between going skiing in the Sierra Nevada, enjoying the urban and cultural buzz of Granada, sunbathing on the beach, hiking and exploring the local nature or staying in the house having a barbecue in the garden.
The nearly 800-year-long period Moorish and Arab culture has influenced the landscapes of Alpujarra more than any other Spanish regions. The culture of the Arabs is reflected in the architecture, in arts and crafts, music and cooking. But above all, the Arabs cultivated the land, built terraces and irrigation ditches, and brought a variety of plants and fruits from the East that shaped the landscape until the present days. Órgiva is known for its millenary olive trees with their powerful, distinctive gnarled trunks, some which were planted even by the Romans. Today there is in interesting addition to the old traditions an alternative and refreshing culture of artists, craftspeople, organic farmers, organic groceries shops, Arabian tea rooms, halal food shops, yoga and flamenco schools and a Buddhist center.
Spain is a gourmet's paradise and a country that enjoys the pleasure of food.
So varied and colourful the country, so varied and colourful the dishes. The cuisine of the Alpujarra lives from the pure and natural flavor of its autochthonous products due to the unique combination of different altitudes, temperatures, natural waters and microclimates. As such, its cuisine oozes of delicious and vibrant taste. There is a vast myriad of yummy stews including rice dishes similar to genuine paella, air-dried mountain ham, salamis, chorizos, mountain cheese, seafood, fresh vegetables and egg dishes, and other local treats which are considered world-class foods. Many of these specialties are served as tapas (scrumptious nibbles that come for free with a drink – beer, glass of wine or sherry). Enjoy!
